Why spend Thanksgiving in Tromsø
For many American travellers, Thanksgiving is a long weekend that can stretch into a week. Tromsø offers a very different holiday: dark skies, snow, small-group tours and a quiet town without the pre-Christmas crowds of December. The week 23–29 November sits at the start of the polar-night season, when the sun is getting very low.
Thanksgiving itself falls on Thursday 26 November, which is a normal day in Norway. That means you need to make your own tradition: a warm meal in town, a toast on the harbour or a quiet evening before a tour.
Getting there and beating jet lag
Most US visitors fly via Oslo or another European hub and then take a domestic flight to Tromsø. Allow a full day for the journey, and assume you will arrive tired. Jet lag from the US east coast is about six hours, and more from the west.
Our advice is simple: do not book the northern lights tour on the first night. Eat, sleep and take a gentle walk. Save the 5–8 hour chase for night two or three, when you are rested.
Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 November: arrive and settle
Arrive on Monday or Tuesday, check in, and keep the first evening light. A short walk through the centre and a warm dinner is plenty. If you arrive early in the day, you could join a daytime tour on Tuesday, but we would rather rest.
This is also when to check live availability for tours later in the week, because Thanksgiving week is popular with US travellers and some nights will fill.
Wednesday 25 November: the first northern lights chase
Book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for Wednesday evening. Pickup is at 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. The tour is NOK 2,300 per person, runs 5–8 hours, and includes a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks, with a small group of 2–8 guests.

It is a long night, so sleep late on Thursday. If the aurora does not show, you will have another chance later in the week.

Use Thanksgiving for a daytime tour. The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 starts at 10:00, lasts 5–6 hours and includes a local lunch, so you are not cooking or searching for a restaurant. It makes a lovely substitute for the usual family meal.

In the evening, find a restaurant in town and celebrate with a toast to the Arctic. We recommend booking dinner early, because many visitors have the same idea.
Friday 27 and Saturday 28 November: flexible days
Keep Friday for rest or a lighter outing. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 1,500, 4 hours, ages 10+, with a 10:00 pickup, and is a nice way to see the polar twilight. On Saturday, consider a second chase if you did not see the lights on Wednesday.
The end of November is when the sun stops rising in Tromsø for the winter, so the days feel like a long blue evening. Many people love it.
Sunday 29 November: last night
If your flight leaves on Monday, a last northern lights chase on Sunday is possible, but plan for a late return and an early flight. If your flight is early, skip the chase and enjoy a quiet night.
For families, the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 15,000 per group of up to 8 welcomes all ages and lets you choose when to turn back.
