Flights to Bocas del Toro: Air Panama and the Casa Cayuco Boat
Most people reach Bocas del Toro in 50 minutes by air and the last 30–35 minutes by boat. Here is how the flight and the lodge’s daily speedboat line up, which flights we would pick, and what to do if your plans do not fit the schedule.

The part of a Bocas del Toro trip that worries people most is not the beach, it is the connection: a flight, then a boat, then a lodge you have never seen. We are family travellers from Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland — and we like it when a lodge simply tells you which flight to book. Casa Cayuco does exactly that. Everything below comes from the lodge’s own travel information; we have not made the journey ourselves yet.
Flights to Bocas del Toro leave from Panama City’s Albrook Airport and take about 50 minutes with Air Panama; the flight to book for Casa Cayuco is Air Panama Flight 980, which arrives in Bocas around 2:00 pm, with Flight 981 back. The lodge’s included speedboat meets that flight, and the ride to Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama takes roughly 30–35 minutes. The route in one paragraph
Fly Panama City (Albrook Airport) to Bocas del Toro (Isla Colón), about 50 minutes, with Air Panama. At the Bocas airport the lodge’s captain meets you with a sign. A short walk or taxi takes you to the dock in Bocas Town, and the scheduled boat carries you through protected mangrove islands in the Bastimentos National Marine Park to the secluded beach at Punta Vieja on Isla Bastimentos. The round-trip transfer is included in every stay. Door to door, plan on an easy half-day of travel from Panama City.
If you came here asking about flights because you are comparing lodges, this is the single biggest practical plus of Casa Cayuco: the schedule is built around the flight most guests take.
Which flight to book: 980 out, 981 back
The lodge recommends Air Panama Flight 980 from Panama City, arriving in Bocas around 2:00 pm, and Flight 981 back, leaving Bocas about 2:30 pm. They match the lodge’s one scheduled boat a day. Here is how the day lines up on arrival and departure:

| Moment | What happens |
|---|---|
| Arrival, around 2:00 pm | Flight 980 lands in Bocas; the captain meets you at the airport with a sign (the lodge’s recommended pick-up) |
| Around 3:00 pm | The scheduled boat leaves the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town for Casa Cayuco |
| About 30–35 min later | You arrive at the lodge’s beach; check-in is from 3:00 pm |
| Departure day, around 12:30 pm | The boat leaves Casa Cayuco (check-out is 12:30 pm) and connects with Flight 981 at about 2:30 pm |
Fly Trip also flies the route daily, with times that vary by weekday. Private charters are available with Blue Skies. If you choose a flight other than 980/981, ask the lodge before you buy: other boat times are private transfers for a fee, and early pick-ups are not available.
What the included boat transfer covers
The round-trip scheduled speedboat from Bocas Town is included in the price of your stay — you do not book it separately. There is one scheduled boat a day, which is worth knowing when you plan: your arrival day and your departure day are set by it. Guests get a pre-arrival form to fill in so the lodge knows your flights.

The pick-up point in Bocas Town is the bookkeeper’s office (Oficina Virginia Vasquez), about a ten-minute walk from the airport, or a taxi for $2 per person. Luggage can be stored there. It sits in the yellow and turquoise house between the Policía Nacional and Brothers Restaurant, so you will not wander far wrong. The lodge describes the ride as passing through the mangrove channels of the national marine park, which makes the transfer a small sightseeing trip in itself.
If you land early or leave late: killing time in Bocas Town
Because the boat runs on a fixed schedule, you will sometimes have a gap in Bocas Town. The lodge suggests Bibi’s on the Beach (reached by a $1-per-person water taxi) or La Buga, which sits on the water. Both are easy places to sit with a drink while your luggage is minded and your phone charges.
If you are on an earlier flight and have hours to fill, remember that luggage storage is available at the pick-up office. We would use the time for lunch and a short wander rather than any big excursion — the lodge’s own excursions are all planned on arrival, from the lodge itself, so there is no need to book tours in town.

Cheaper and slower: the overnight bus option
If you would rather save the fare and see Panama from a bus window, there is an overland route: an overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante leaves at 8 pm and arrives at 6 am, followed by a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town. From Boquete, a bus transfer with Hello Travel Panama via Almirante takes about 4 hours including the water taxi. From Costa Rica you can fly Sansa from San José (currently Tuesdays and Thursdays, about 50 minutes) or take the Caribe Shuttle overland.

Whichever way you arrive in Bocas Town, you still need to meet the lodge’s scheduled boat — which leaves around 3:00 pm — so overnight-bus travellers should plan the arrival day around it. We cover all of the routes in our full how-to-get-there guide.
Panama City on the way: where to sleep before an early flight
Many guests spend a night in Panama City before flying to Bocas. The lodge says its guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo — mention Casa Cayuco when you book. For driving and day tours the lodge points to Hobby Pro Tours (English-speaking), and Uber works in the city too.

We would build one Panama City night around the Casco Viejo old quarter and keep the next morning free for the Albrook flight. If you want a longer city-plus-islands plan, our Panama stays hub collects every itinerary and room guide in one place.
Practical travel tips for the flight-and-boat day
- Pack light and soft. Small planes and speedboats are easier with a duffel bag than a rigid suitcase; ask the lodge about luggage allowances for your flight.
- Keep valuables and sun protection in your hand luggage. Reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a headlamp, trail or water shoes and a light rain jacket are the lodge’s packing suggestions.
- Bring cash. Panama uses US dollars; you will want small notes for the $2 taxi and for crafts in Salt Creek village.
- Fill in the pre-arrival form. It tells the lodge which flight you are on.
- Buy travel insurance. The lodge strongly recommends it, and a flight-plus-boat day depends on the weather and the airline.
Rain in Bocas is usually at night and clears by late morning, so the afternoon boat ride is most often a dry one — but the lodge is clear that tropical forecasts are unpredictable.

Our Honest Final Word
Getting to a remote island lodge always involves a few moving parts, but Casa Cayuco has made most of them for you: a recommended flight pair, an included boat that meets it, and a pick-up point that does not require a map. The one real constraint is that there is only one scheduled boat a day, so your arrival and departure days are less flexible than at a hotel in town. If you need to arrive early in the morning, or you want the freedom of a rental car, a remote lodge is not for you.
