Bocas del Toro in May: Weather, Surf and Where to Stay
May is the start of the rainier stretch in Bocas del Toro, and it comes with fewer crowds and greener jungle. Here is what to expect, what to pack and why we would book a beachfront bungalow at Casa Cayuco.

This guide is built from our own family travels and from Casa Cayuco’s own pages and booking terms — what is included, how to get there and what each room is like come straight from the lodge, never invented.
Bocas del Toro in May is warm, green and a little wet, with rain mostly at night and temperatures around 27 °C. May falls in the lodge’s rainier May to July period, and the surf swell season is over, so this is a month for snorkelling, trails and quiet beaches. What the weather is really like in May
According to Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro is warm all year, averaging about 27 °C (82 °F). The lodge lists May to July as a rainier period, with June and July the rainiest months. Importantly, rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, and a forecast that shows thunderstorms every day is typical tropical unpredictability rather than a washout.

That matches the way we read tropical weather as a family: plan for showers, not for a ruined week. Panama is also outside the hurricane belt. If you want the full picture across the year, our month-by-month guide and our post on whether the rainy season is a problem cover it.
Surf and sea conditions in May
If you are coming for waves, May is the wrong month. The lodge says the biggest surf swell runs November to April, so by May the swell season has ended. Calm seas for swimming and snorkelling arrive in August to October, and May sits between the two. That does not mean the water is unusable: Casa Cayuco says it is one of the only resorts in the archipelago with direct access to a calm, swimmable beach all year round, and its protected snorkel spots work year-round too.
Surfers who are strong swimmers can still ask about the guided surf trip ($75 per person, two-person minimum), but it is not a surf school, and we would not plan a May trip around it.
The honest pros of visiting in May
The upsides are real, though we state them with care because we have not stayed there ourselves. The rainier months tend to be greener, and a lodge with a maximum of 53 guests usually feels quieter outside the headline winter season, though we cannot promise occupancy for any date. Rain at night means many days still begin with sunshine, and the jungle trail starting right at the lodge is at its leafiest.
- Lush rainforest and plenty of wildlife on the trails.
- A good month for relaxed, slow itineraries with hammock time.
- Calm, swimmable beach in front of the lodge.
- Seasonal flexibility: check live rates for your dates.
The honest cons
May is not for everyone. Expect rain, some of it heavy, mostly overnight but not always. Boat transfers and excursions can be affected by weather, and the lodge plans activities at check-in with its guides, so stay flexible. Mosquitoes and chitras appear at dusk and dawn, so natural repellent matters, and the open-air design means humidity is part of the deal. Only the villa is air-conditioned.

If you want guaranteed sun, the lodge lists February to April and August to October as generally drier. If you want dry weather and calm sea together, look at September and October.
Snorkelling and wildlife in May
With the swell season over, May suits the water-based activities. Snorkel gear, sea kayaks and SUP boards are free to use at the lodge. The Zapatillas half-day trip, with beaches and guided snorkelling at two uninhabited islands, costs $80 per person, and the Mangrove Snorkeling trip, with soft corals, sponges, octopus and starfish, costs $85. On the land side, the Red Frog Trail through Salt Creek is $35 and the lodge’s own Sendero loop, with poison dart frogs, sloths, monkeys and birds, is $25.

Prices are as listed on the lodge’s site in November 2026 and may change. Salt Creek village tour is included with every stay.

Where to stay in May: the new bungalows are open
The lodge was closed from 1 May to 31 October 2026 for building work and is open again, and its two new beachfront units, the Starfish bungalow and the Cangrejo cabaña, are ready for stays from 15 December 2026, so they will be open by May. Their pictures on the lodge’s site are design renderings, so ask the lodge about anything you want confirmed.

For couples, we would choose the Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama, a thatched beachfront bungalow with a queen bed. The Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama suite gives canopy views from the third floor of the main lodge, and the new Starfish Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama has a king bed. Families should look at Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama or Delfín Beachside Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama instead, which both sleep five. What to pack for May
Pack as the lodge suggests, with a rainy-month emphasis, and keep electronics in a waterproof pouch for boat rides. A light rain jacket is the first item, then reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a flashlight or headlamp, and trail or water shoes for wet paths. Quick-drying clothes help in the humidity, and a dry bag for the boat ride is sensible. Hair dryers are not welcome, and outlets are US-style Type A at 110 V. Our full packing list for a Bocas del Toro eco lodge has the rest.
A sample May day at the lodge
Because rain tends to fall at night, we would plan the active part of each day for the morning. Start with the locally grown coffee and a chef’s choice breakfast at the communal table, then head out while the sky is clear: a kayak along the beach, a guided snorkelling trip, or the Sendero jungle loop. Lunch is included, and the afternoon snack is brought to wherever you are, which is handy if a shower sends you under a porch roof.

If clouds roll in, May is a good month to lean into the slower side of the lodge: a book in a hammock, a yoga session, a massage with the in-house therapist (book at check-in) or a table on the dock for the three-course dinner. Everything is planned on arrival with the in-house guides, so you can adjust each day to the sky rather than commit weeks ahead.
May compared with the drier months
| Period | What the lodge says | Feels like |
|---|---|---|
| February to April | Generally drier; biggest swell until April | Sunny, with surf for confident surfers |
| May to July | Rainier; June and July the rainiest | Green and quiet, rain mostly at night |
| August to October | Generally drier; calmest sea | Best for swimming and snorkelling |
If your dates are fixed to May, you are choosing the green season on purpose. If you can move them, the lodge’s own guidance points to August to October for calm seas or February to April for the drier run. Our post on Bocas del Toro in April shows what the month before looks like.
Who should go in May
May suits travellers who prefer green landscapes and quiet days over a guaranteed dry spell: snorkellers, wildlife watchers, couples and flexible families with children aged 5 and up. It does not suit surfers, anyone chasing a certain sun-tan week, or travellers with a fixed outdoor schedule. Remember the minimum stay is 3 nights, and we would plan four or more so one wet day does not define the trip. Travel insurance is strongly recommended by the lodge, and a May booking is a good reason to read the cancellation terms before paying the deposit.
How to book Casa Cayuco with our 4% discount

Our Honest Final Word
Bocas del Toro in May is a green-season trip. You trade a little certainty for quieter beaches, leafy trails and the same calm swimming spot in front of the lodge. We would go with realistic expectations, a rain jacket and a flexible plan, and we would pick the Pelicano for two people.
