Why early January works
Tromsø is dark for a large part of the day in early January, and the sun does not rise above the horizon until the middle of the month. The northern lights need darkness, and there is plenty of it. Many travellers plan holidays around Christmas and New Year; by 3 January, those visitors have gone home. For people who can travel in this week, it is often easier to find a place on a tour.
