Tromsø Sights: What to See in Town and Which Tour to Add

Tromsø has a handful of sights you can walk to and a few experiences you cannot reach without a guide. This is how we would combine the two, with sensible notes for winter days, and how to book the tours with 5% off.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.

Short answer

The sights most visitors put on a Tromsø list are the Arctic Cathedral, the Fjellheisen cable car, Polaria, the Polar Museum and a walk along Storgata in the old town. They fit into a half day. What they do not give you is the northern lights, the coast or the wilderness, which is where a tour comes in. Our favourite pairing is a town walk in the daytime and the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at night, bookable online with HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for 5% off.

What to see in Tromsø without a tour

Tromsø city centre is small. Storgata, the main street, runs through the old town, with cafes, wooden houses and shops. The harbour front is a short walk away, and the Polar Museum and Polaria sit on the waterfront side. Across the bridge is the Arctic Cathedral, with its triangular profile, and next to it the base of the Fjellheisen cable car, which takes you up for a view over the city. We are not the operators of any of these, so check opening hours and prices on their own sites, especially in winter.

Plan on two to four hours if you do a couple of them, and you will still have an afternoon free.

How winter changes the sights

From late November to mid-January the sun stays below the horizon. That does not mean darkness all day: there is a long blue twilight, and the city looks beautiful in it. Streets can be icy, so wear boots with grip. A cable car trip on a clear day is a good idea, while a stormy day is better spent in a museum.

What you cannot see without a guide

The things that make people book flights to Tromsø are not in the centre. The northern lights are best seen from a chase tour that drives to clear sky. The island coast around Kvaløya and Sommarøy, with its fjords, white beaches and fishing villages, is reached on the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,100 per person, 5–6 hours, lunch included). A quieter, shorter option is the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, NOK 1,500 per person, 3–4 hours.

A half day in town, then the lights

Start late with breakfast, walk Storgata and the harbour, visit one museum or take the cable car, and eat an early dinner. Be outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 18:30 for the northern lights tour. It is one of the most natural pairings in Tromsø, since the meeting point is on the same waterfront.
