Northern Lights: Tromsø, Abisko or Alta? How We Would Choose a Base for the Aurora
Three of the best-known aurora bases in northern Scandinavia, one trip to plan. We know this region from our own Arctic winters in Finnish Lapland, and this is how we would weigh weather, travel time, tours and budget, and why Tromsø often wins for a first visit.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
Choose Tromsø if you want the easiest trip: an airport in the city, plenty to do by day, and a guided chase that can drive towards clear skies. Choose Abisko if you will happily travel for a quiet, dark, wilderness setting and your priority is aurora-watching with little else. Choose Alta if you want a smaller town in Finnmark and a more remote feel. For most first-timers we would book Tromsø and the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,300 per person, 5 to 8 hours), because it gives you more than one backup and a lot to do in daylight. What Actually Decides Your Chances
Whichever town you pick, three things decide whether you see the aurora: how long you stay, how clear the sky is on your nights, and whether you can move to a clearer place. The aurora itself is more or less overhead in all three, since they sit in the auroral zone. The differences are about weather, logistics and what you do when the sky is cloudy.
From our own experience, travellers who stay four nights or more nearly always see something, and travellers who stay one night depend heavily on luck. That is true wherever you go, and it is the first filter: length of stay beats the choice of town.
Tromsø: The Easy Base
Tromsø is a real city with an airport, hotels in every price range, restaurants, museums and a harbour, all within walking distance of the pickup point for tours. Its coastal location means weather can change quickly; the upside is that a guide can drive a few hours inland or along the coast to find clear sky. Legendary Adventure’s description of the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 says the route is prepared from the latest forecasts and the guides’ knowledge, going either inland or along the coast.
The rest of your trip is easy to fill. By day you can do a Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, a fjord day, a Sámi experience or a quiet city walk; by night you can try for the lights twice. For families and anyone new to the Arctic, that variety is a big part of the value.
Abisko: The Specialist
Abisko, in Swedish Lapland, has a reputation among aurora enthusiasts for relatively dry, clear air thanks to the surrounding mountains. As far as we know, it is a small settlement with limited accommodation and few other things to do, so it suits travellers who want dark, quiet nights and nothing else on the agenda. Getting there normally means a long journey from the nearest big airport.

We would recommend it to experienced aurora chasers with a flexible schedule. For a first trip with a family or a mixed-interest couple, we would not, because a cloudy week there leaves little to fall back on. Tromsø, by contrast, has a guided chase that can move to wherever the sky is clearer, although where it goes is the guide’s decision on the night and never a promise.
Alta: The Quieter Finnmark Option
Alta, further east in Finnmark, is a smaller town known for its rock carvings and a continental, often drier climate than the coast. It offers aurora tours and winter activities and feels calmer than Tromsø. The trade-off is fewer flights and a smaller choice of tours, restaurants and hotels. We have not run tours there, so we will not rate them; we would simply say that it suits travellers who want a quieter trip and have already seen Tromsø.

Budget and Practicalities
Cost matters more than people admit. In Tromsø you can build a trip at almost any budget: hostels and mid-range hotels, supermarkets for easy lunches, and one or two paid tours placed where they count. In a very small settlement, accommodation and food are limited, prices can be high for what you get, and you usually have to buy a package. We would compare total trip cost, flights and transfers included, not only the tour price.
For the aurora itself, a shared chase at NOK 2,300 per person is the standard way to give yourself the best chance. If you travel as a couple for four nights and book two attempts, that is NOK 9,200 before discount. Stretching the stay by an extra night costs far less than a second flight if you miss the lights.
Also think about daylight. In midwinter, the days are short everywhere in this region, so daytime activities matter. In Tromsø you can hike, take a fjord day or visit the Sámi experiences. That gives you a rest from nights out and ties the trip together, which is why couples and families with different interests tend to be happier in a city base.
When to Go, Whichever You Choose
The aurora season in northern Scandinavia runs roughly from September to early April, with dark skies from autumn through winter. Midwinter gives the longest nights but also the coldest weather and the shortest days; the shoulder months offer milder temperatures and more daylight for activities. Our rule: book at least four nights, avoid squeezing the tour into your last evening before an early flight, and treat the moon and the forecast as inputs, not verdicts.
If you can only travel in a specific school holiday, book early. December and February are the busiest months in Tromsø, and the tours and rooms you want will go first. Check live availability and keep the cancellation rules in mind: a full refund more than 48 hours before, and 100% charged inside 48 hours.
Our Rule of Thumb
If you cannot decide, ask yourself one question: what do you do on the cloudy night? In Tromsø the answer is easy, because there is a city, a hike and a fjord tour. If your answer is “read a book in a cabin”, then Abisko or a similar small base may suit you. If it is “explore”, Tromsø wins. We also recommend that first-timers think about how they will get back to the airport: in Tromsø, the airport is close to town, which removes one risk from the final day.
