The holiday weekend: what is on the calendar

In 2026, 8 December falls on a Tuesday. In Italy it is the Immaculate Conception holiday, and in Spain it is the Inmaculada, which is a public holiday too. That makes the days from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December a natural four-day break for many travellers, and some people add Monday 7 December to make it longer. Holiday rules vary by region and employer, so check your own calendar.

We live in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland, and we know that early December is the start of the Arctic holiday season. Tromsø is a popular choice. This guide uses the operator’s published information, since we have not yet taken these tours ourselves.

Is four days enough for Tromsø?

Four days is enough for one or two northern lights attempts and a daytime tour, which is what most visitors want. You will not see everything, and you should not try. A realistic plan is: arrive Saturday, use Sunday for a daytime tour and an aurora chase that evening, keep Monday for a second chase or a rest, and fly home Tuesday.

Flights from Italy and Spain usually connect through Oslo or another hub, so allow for delays. Do not book anything tight on arrival day.

Night plan: two chances at the northern lights

The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 departs at 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October) outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, lasts 5–8 hours and costs NOK 2 300 per person. It is for ages 7+. The route is chosen from the latest forecasts, so you have a fair chance on any night, but not a guarantee. Two nights give you better odds than one, since cloud can spoil a single evening.

If you can afford it, book night one and night three, and use night two for dinner and rest. If not, book one early in the stay.

Day plan: the fjord tour or a snowshoe hike

For a daytime activity, the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 lasts 5–6 hours at NOK 2 100 per person, with 10:00 pickup and lunch included. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 1 500 per person for 4 hours, ages 10+. If you want the shortest option, the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 1 500 and 3–4 hours.

In early December, daylight is very short, so a morning departure makes the most of the blue light.

Dress, food and the cold

The northern lights tour includes a winter suit and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks, so you only need warm layers under the suit. For the snowshoe hike, wear good winter boots and layers. Our general packing advice is in our Tromsø activities hub. Tromsø restaurants fill up on holiday weekends, so book dinners early.

Group, couple or family: which tours fit

Couples can use the shared tours. Families with children under 7 should look at the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 15 000 per group, which is listed for all ages. Groups of six to eight friends should compare shared and private prices, as the private tour is cheaper per person at seven or eight guests.
