Why snowshoeing suits a Christmas or New Year break

Christmas and New Year in Tromsø revolve around darkness, lights and cold. That makes daytime activities valuable, because the few hours of blue twilight are your best chance to see the landscape. A snowshoe hike is a quiet, slow-paced way to do that. You do not need to be sporty. You walk through snow with a guide, stop often, and learn what you are looking at.

British and German visitors often tell us they want something active that is not extreme. Snowshoeing fits that description, and it is something the whole family can do once children reach age 10. We live in Rovaniemi, and snowshoeing is one of our favourite ways to enjoy Lapland winters. We have not yet taken this particular tour, so the details below come from the operator’s page.

The facts: price, time, age and inclusions

The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 costs NOK 1 500 per person and lasts 4 hours including transfer. It is recommended for ages 10+. Pickup is at 10:00 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, where you look for a black Mercedes. The group is 2–8 guests (larger groups on request). Included are a local expert guide, transport in a Mercedes minivan, and snowshoes and poles. The season is winter.

The operator suggests dressing in layers and wearing good winter shoes that keep you warm and dry. The description mentions snow-capped mountains, fjords and possible wildlife such as reindeer, foxes and seabirds. No sighting is guaranteed.

Christmas week: what it looks like

Christmas week is the busiest time in Tromsø, so plan early. Daylight is minimal, and a 10:00 pickup means you start in dim blue light. The group usually returns by early afternoon, leaving time to rest, eat and prepare for an evening activity. For many families the day after Christmas is a good time for a gentle activity after the festivities.

If you have mixed ages, remember that 10 is the recommended minimum for the shared hike. For families with younger children, the other options in our Tromsø activities hub may suit better, and the Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 12 000 per group is also listed for ages 10+.

New Year: a calm start to the day

New Year’s Eve in Tromsø is lively, with fireworks and gatherings in the city. A morning snowshoe hike is a calm contrast, and a good way to start the day if you plan a late night. If you are celebrating late, be realistic about energy and choose a different date for the hike. New Year’s Day is also an option, though you may be tired.

Book early for these dates, since holiday departures fill up. Availability is shown live on the booking page.

UK visitors: flights, weather and expectations

From the UK, Tromsø is reached by connecting flights, often via Oslo. The weather is cold but usually less extreme than many expect, and the snow is reliable in mid-winter. British visitors often ask whether they will be too cold. With layers and proper boots, the answer is usually no, and the hike’s pace keeps you warm.

February half-term is another popular period, and the hike works for older children then too. If you are planning ahead for it, book a few weeks before.

German visitors: winter breaks and group size

German visitors often travel in December and during winter school breaks. Groups of friends or families of three to four are common, and the shared hike works well. If your group is closer to six or eight, compare the shared price with the private hike at NOK 12 000 per group. Six people on the private hike pay NOK 2 000 each, which is above the shared price of NOK 1 500, so shared remains better unless you want your own guide.
