Birdwatching on the Sommarøy and Kvaløya Fjord Tour: Sea Eagles, Cormorants and Guillemots
You do not need to be a birder to enjoy the coast west of Tromsø, but the birdlife is a real bonus. We explain which birds the operator names, how to spot them, and how to book the tour.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.

Why this coast is good for birds
The operator’s tour page calls the coastline a paradise for bird enthusiasts and says Sommarøy’s cliffs are especially rich in birdlife. Cold, nutrient-rich water brings fish close to the surface, and fish bring birds. A fjord and island landscape also offers cliffs for nesting, calm bays for resting and open sky for soaring. That combination is why even a casual traveller tends to notice the birds on a coastal drive in northern Norway.

We live in Rovaniemi, inland in Finnish Lapland, where the birds are different, so a coastal day in Norway is a refreshing change for us too. We have not yet joined this tour, so what follows is based on the operator’s description and on general knowledge of Arctic coastal birds.
The birds the operator names
The tour description lists three things to watch for: white-tailed sea eagles soaring above the fjords, cormorants and guillemots nesting along rocky cliffs, and a variety of seabirds feeding in the cold Arctic waters. White-tailed sea eagles are large, with broad wings and a pale tail, and are often seen circling over water. Cormorants are dark and sit upright on rocks with wings held open to dry. Guillemots are black and white seabirds that nest on cliff ledges.
Note that nesting colonies are a spring and summer sight. In winter, many seabirds are elsewhere or out at sea, so set your expectations by season. The operator does not promise any particular bird on any particular day, and neither do we.
What to expect in winter
In the dark months, daylight is short and the light is soft. That can make spotting birds harder, but it also makes sea eagles striking against pale skies. Expect some birds, especially near the coast and harbours, and treat any sighting as a bonus. If your main goal is birdwatching, spring is likely better. If your main goal is landscapes, winter blue light is superb.
The tour is a year-round experience, so you can choose the season that matches your interests. For a general winter traveller, the combination of snowy mountains, calm fjords and the possibility of eagles is plenty.
How to spot birds from a tour vehicle
Sit by a window, scan the sky along the shoreline, and watch for movement against the mountains. Large birds soaring in slow circles are usually eagles. Birds on rocks near the waterline are often cormorants. Tell your guide you are interested, and ask them to point things out at stops. Guides who know the area often spot birds before you do.

Bring binoculars if you have them, and a camera with some zoom. A phone camera shows small dots at distance, so if photography matters, a compact zoom lens helps. Keep your hands warm, since fiddling with gear in the cold is miserable.

Birds are not the only wildlife. The operator also mentions reindeer grazing near the road, moose moving through the forest, and seasonal whale sightings, including orcas and humpback whales during migration periods. Each is a possibility, not a promise. The Arctic is not a zoo, and part of the charm is not knowing what you will see.
If whales are your main goal, note that the operator also lists a separate private whale watching option from October to January, which is a different product at a much higher price. This fjord tour is a scenic day with possible wildlife, not a dedicated wildlife expedition.
Lunch, scenery and the rest of the day
Lunch is included at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel by the sea, with vegan and vegetarian options available. The route also includes several scenic stops, white-sand beaches, mountains and fjords, and the guide shares stories about local fishing traditions and coastal life. For birders, lunch is a nice pause to review what you saw, and for everyone else it is a warm break in a cold day.

Who this tour suits
The tour suits couples, families with children aged 7 and up, and solo travellers who want a relaxed day. It does not suit anyone who needs a dedicated birding expedition with a specialist guide, since that is not what the operator sells. For families with younger children, the Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 15 000 per group is listed for all ages, and our other guides in our Tromsø activities hub cover family planning.
