5 Days in Tromsø in Winter: A Day-by-Day Itinerary and Exactly Which Tours to Book
Five days is the length where Tromsø stops being a rush: one northern lights chase with real back-up nights, two full daytime tours, a rest day after the late night and a short fjord morning before you fly. This is the plan we give friends, with Legendary Adventure’s real pickup times and prices, what to drop if you only want two or three tours, and 5% off all of them.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
Book four tours and keep two evenings free. Night 1: the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (pickup 18:30, 5–8 hours, NOK 2,300). Day 2: rest, with the evening held as a back-up for a second chase — or the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500) if night one delivered. Day 3: the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (10:00, 4 hours, NOK 1,500). Day 4: the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (5–6 hours, lunch included, NOK 2,100). Day 5: the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (3–4 hours, NOK 1,500) before an afternoon flight. The four core tours cost NOK 7,400 per person, or NOK 7,030 with code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout.

The 5-Day Plan at a Glance — and Why the Order Matters
We have planned this for five nights in Tromsø between November and March: you land on day 1 by mid-afternoon and fly home on the afternoon or evening of day 5. If you have one more night, keep the order and add a free day in the middle. Here is the shape:
- Day 1 — arrive, then chase: Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the evening.
- Day 2 — rest: slow morning in town; evening held as back-up night one.
- Day 3 — snowshoes: Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the morning, free afternoon and evening.
- Day 4 — the coast: Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 with lunch; evening held as back-up night two.
- Day 5 — a short fjord morning: Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, then the airport.
Three rules drive that order. First, the aurora chase goes on night one, because the sky decides whether you see anything and you want as many spare evenings after it as possible. Second, nothing starts at 10:00 the morning after a chase that can end around 02:00. Third, the longest daytime tour sits in the second half of the trip, when jet lag has gone and you can enjoy five or six hours in a minibus.
Logistics are easy. Every shared Legendary Adventure tour in this plan picks up outside Clarion Hotel The Edge on the harbour front — look for a black Mercedes. Stay anywhere in the centre and you can walk to every pickup; you do not need a car. If you want a shorter version, our 3-day Tromsø itinerary squeezes the same core into a long weekend.
Day 1 and Day 2 — Chase the Lights First, Then Slow Down
Check in, walk the harbour and eat something light in the afternoon. The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 includes a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks out in the field, so a big dinner before pickup is wasted money. From 25 October the pickup is 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge.
What NOK 2,300 per person buys: a local expert guide who chooses the route that evening from the latest weather forecasts, a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle with 2–8 guests, a winter suit to wear over your own layers, and 5–8 hours of looking for a gap in the cloud, inland or along the coast. On a good night you are back before midnight; on a stubborn one, much later. Recommended ages are 7 and up.
Day 2 is deliberately empty. Sleep in. In the afternoon, take the Fjellheisen cable car for the view over the island, or cross the bridge to the Arctic Cathedral. The evening is the reason this day exists:
- If night one was cloudy, book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 again. The forecast will be different, so the route will be too.
- If you saw the lights, either have an early night or book the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — a four-hour night walk on snowshoes away from the city lights, pickup 18:30, snacks and a hot drink included, NOK 1,500, ages 10 and up. It stays close to Tromsø instead of driving to clear sky, so it is a different evening, not a better chance.
Peak weeks fill up, so check the live calendar for night two on the morning of day two rather than leaving it to the evening. We wrote a separate piece on what happens if you do not see the northern lights — worth reading before you choose how many aurora nights to budget.
Day 3 — A Morning on Snowshoes, an Afternoon Off
By day three you have slept properly and the body clock has caught up. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge and lasts four hours including the transfer to the trail, so you are back in town for a late lunch. It costs NOK 1,500 per person for groups of 2–8, with a local expert guide, transport in a Mercedes minivan, and snowshoes and poles included. The operator recommends it for ages 10 and up.

From our own Arctic winters, snowshoeing is the daytime activity we push hardest on first-time visitors, because it is the one that puts you in the landscape rather than looking at it through a window. The pace is a walk, not a workout, and the guide picks slopes that suit the snow that week. The operator mentions reindeer, foxes and seabirds as possible sightings along the way — possible, not promised.
Light depends on your dates. In December and early January the sun does not rise in Tromsø, but the hours around midday are a long blue twilight, and the 10:00 pickup puts you on the snow right in it. From February the sun is back and the same walk is bright white with long views.
Keep the rest of day three empty. Two days in a row with a tour on both ends is how holidays turn into endurance events.
Day 4 — The Big Coastal Day to Sommarøy
This is the tour that shows you why people fall for northern Norway. The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a 5–6 hour drive-and-stop day west across Kvaløya to the island village of Sommarøy: winding coastal roads, snowy mountains straight out of the fjords, white-sand Arctic beaches and several scenic stops for photos.

Lunch is included at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel by the sea, with vegan and vegetarian options. That inclusion matters for a five-day budget: NOK 2,100 per person for a near-full day with a sit-down meal is the best value in the plan. Pickup is 10:00 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, groups are 2–8 guests, and the recommended age is 7 and up. It runs year-round.
On wildlife, the operator is honest and so are we: Kvaløya is a good area for reindeer and moose near the road, you may spot white-tailed sea eagles over the fjords, and orcas and humpbacks are a seasonal chance during their migration periods. None of it is guaranteed.
Evening of day four: back-up night two. If you still have not had a clear sky, this is your last good chance for a second Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — you can sleep on the plane tomorrow. If you already have your photos, enjoy a long dinner.

If your flight leaves in the late afternoon or evening, the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 fits neatly: pickup 10:00 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, 3–4 hours, NOK 1,500 per person, ages 7 and up, and it runs year-round. It is the short, closer-to-town fjord drive — mountains, two quiet fjords and photo stops without the full day on the road.

Check out before pickup and leave your bags at the hotel. Tromsø Airport is on the same island as the city, roughly a 10–15 minute taxi ride from the centre, so a return around 13:00–14:00 leaves a comfortable margin for most afternoon departures. If your flight is before about 15:00, skip the tour — never gamble a flight on a scenic drive.
Travelling as a group of four or more, or with a child who has not turned seven? The Private Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 12,000 for the whole vehicle (up to 8 guests), all ages, with coffee or tea and a cinnamon bun included and your own pickup address chosen at checkout — handy for collecting you and the luggage from an apartment.
Prefer culture to scenery? The Spiritual Sámi Culture Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 also picks up at 10:00 for four hours, priced per group at NOK 17,500 — a splurge for groups.
What to Choose If You Only Book 2, 3 or 4 Tours
Not everyone wants a tour every day. Here is how we would cut the plan down, in order of what to keep:
- Two tours: the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on night one and the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on day three or four. One aurora chase, one big landscape day — NOK 4,400 per person. Use the other days for the city and keep two evenings free for a rebooked chase if needed.
- Three tours: add the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. That gives you night, coast and snow — the three things Tromsø does best in winter. NOK 5,900 per person.
- Four tours: add either the Ersfjord morning on day five (if you want more fjords) or the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on night two (if aurora is the point of the trip). NOK 7,400 per person.
Shared or private? Couples and pairs of friends should book shared every time: groups are capped at eight, which is already small. Private versions are priced per vehicle for up to 8 guests, so they start to make sense from about six people. The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 per group — NOK 2,500 each with six, NOK 1,875 each with eight — and it is open to all ages, which matters for families with children under seven.
By age: the shared chase and both fjord tours are recommended for 7 and up, both snowshoe hikes for 10 and up. If the youngest is under ten, drop the day-three snowshoe hike and give that morning to the city; if the youngest is under seven, go private for the chase and both fjord days.
What the Five Days Cost per Person
Operator from-prices in Norwegian kroner, per person on the shared tours. The right-hand column is the price after the 5% reader discount, which works on every Legendary Adventure tour you book online. Hotels, flights and restaurants are extra — but the chase includes a warm meal and the Sommarøy day includes lunch.
| When | Tour | Duration | Price | With 5% off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 evening | Northern Lights Tour | 5–8 h | NOK 2,300 | NOK 2,185 |
| Day 3 morning | Arctic Snowshoe Hike | 4 h | NOK 1,500 | NOK 1,425 |
| Day 4 | Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour (lunch) | 5–6 h | NOK 2,100 | NOK 1,995 |
| Day 5 morning | Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour | 3–4 h | NOK 1,500 | NOK 1,425 |
| Plan total, four core tours | NOK 7,400 | NOK 7,030 | ||
| Total with night-2 Aurora Snowshoe Hike | five tours | NOK 8,900 | NOK 8,455 | |
| Total with a second Northern Lights Tour instead | five tours | NOK 9,700 | NOK 9,215 |
For a couple, the four core tours come to NOK 14,800, or NOK 14,060 with the discount. For a group of six booking the private chase and private Sommarøy day (NOK 15,000 each per vehicle) plus the shared snowshoe hike and Ersfjord morning, the total is NOK 48,000 — NOK 8,000 per person before the discount.

FAQ
Is five days too long for Tromsø in winter?
No. Five days lets you do one northern lights chase with two back-up evenings, a snowshoe hike, a full fjord day to Sommarøy and a short fjord morning, with a rest day after the late chase. Three days works, but leaves only one spare night for cloud.
How much do the tours in this 5-day Tromsø itinerary cost?
The four core shared tours — Northern Lights Tour (NOK 2,300), Arctic Snowshoe Hike (NOK 1,500), Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour (NOK 2,100) and Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour (NOK 1,500) — total NOK 7,400 per person, or NOK 7,030 with code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5.
Which night should I book the northern lights tour?
Your first night, as long as you land by mid-afternoon to make the 18:30 pickup outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. That leaves nights two and four free to rebook if the sky is cloudy.
Can I do a tour on my departure day?
Yes, if your flight is in the late afternoon or evening. The Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour picks up at 10:00 and lasts 3–4 hours, and the airport is about 10–15 minutes from the centre by taxi. With a flight before about 15:00, skip it.
Is this plan suitable for children?
Partly. The Northern Lights Tour and both fjord tours are recommended for ages 7 and up, the snowshoe hikes for 10 and up. With younger children, use the private versions — the Private Northern Lights Tour and the private fjord tours are open to all ages.
What if I need to cancel one of the tours?
On the shared tours you get a full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure; inside 48 hours the full price is charged. That is why we keep the back-up nights unbooked until you know you need them.
Our Honest Final Word
Five days is the length we would choose for a first winter trip to Tromsø. It is long enough that one cloudy night does not ruin the aurora, and long enough to see the place by day rather than only through a minibus window at midnight. The trick is resisting the urge to fill every slot: four tours, two free evenings and a lazy day after the chase will give you a better trip than seven tours back to back.
