Why Hout Bay works for families

Cape Town has no shortage of outdoor days that are better for adults than for children. Hout Bay is one of the exceptions. It is a sheltered working harbour on the Atlantic side of the Peninsula, about 20 to 30 minutes by road from central Cape Town, with the Sentinel mountain on one side and Chapman’s Peak Drive on the other. The operator’s tour page describes calm blue waters, seals and seabirds, and a route that stays inside the bay.

Cape Town Kayaks, part of Cape Adventure Brands, runs its tours from the Karbonkelberg Tourism Adventure Centre in Hout Bay. The company runs several tours of different lengths, which is the point of this guide: for families the right tour depends on the age and confidence of the youngest child, not on the headline option. We cover each one below, with the prices and times as listed on the operator’s pages in October 2026.

As a Finnish family that writes about travelling with children, we like activities where the child does something rather than watching. Paddling is exactly that. We should be clear that we have not done these tours ourselves; we send readers to them after reading the live tour pages.

The family-friendly tours compared

All the kayak tours use the same basic setup: a seat in a double sit-on-top kayak, a paddle, a life jacket and a kayak instructor. The differences are length, price, start time and what else you see. Here is how the four options compare for families.

The 2 Hour Hout Bay Kayak Adventure

This is the standard tour and the one most families will want. At R495 per person for two hours, it starts at 09h00 or 11h30, and the operator’s description says tours run every two hours from 9 am. The operator rates it 2/5 for effort. Your guide gives a short introduction, a safety demonstration and a first lesson in the basics, which the operator says is especially useful if you are new to kayaking. You are then fitted with a life jacket and led to different checkpoints in the bay.

The guide holds certifications that include medical first aid and personal survival techniques, according to the operator, which is the kind of detail we look for before sending anyone out on the water with children. The route takes in the harbour and the bay, with views of the Sentinel and Chapman’s Peak Drive and, usually, seals and seabirds.

The 09h00 start is the better one for small children in summer. Hout Bay can get windy later in the day, and a morning paddle also leaves the afternoon free. Wind and swell can postpone a tour, so keep your schedule flexible on the day.

Age, swimming and the safety rules

The minimum age is 6, and children must go out with an adult. Because the kayaks are doubles, a six-year-old sits with a parent or another adult rather than paddling alone. Life jackets are compulsory for everybody. Non-swimmers are discouraged: guests need to be able to tread water, so if your child is a nervous swimmer, this may not be the right tour yet.

Expect to get a little wet. The kayaks are sit-on-top, which means water splashes onto your lap and legs, and children usually find this one of the best parts. For comfort, we suggest quick-drying clothes, a rash vest or similar, sunscreen, a hat that stays on, and a dry bag for phones and keys. Leave valuables at your accommodation.

Tours run all year, weather permitting. The sea is a different matter from a hiking trail, so listen to the guide, expect a brief postponement if the wind picks up, and do not insist on going out if the operator says conditions are not right.

  • Age 6 and over, with an adult in the same kayak.
  • Life jacket compulsory.
  • Able to tread water; non-swimmers are discouraged.
  • Light, quick-drying clothing, sun protection and a dry bag.

Seals, dolphins and what to expect

Seals are the reason most families come. Hout Bay is home to a colony of Cape fur seals on Duiker Island, also called Seal Island, and seals are common in the bay itself. Dolphins are occasionally seen, but they are never guaranteed, and it is worth telling children that before you go. Telling them the truth leaves room for a nice surprise.

If your biggest priority is seeing the seals, the combination tour is the most reliable way. The Seal Island Boat Trip and Kayak Combo5% off via our link costs R545 per person, runs for about three hours, and finishes at 13h30. You join the 10h30 glass-bottomed boat trip to Duiker Island, then do the 11h30 kayak tour. The boat ticket is included.

The boat alone, the Seal Island Boat Trip5% off via our link, costs R120 per person, lasts 45 minutes and is listed for any age. For families with a child under 6, grandparents who do not want to paddle, or non-swimmers, it is an inexpensive way to see the colony. Departures are listed at 09h00, 09h45, 10h30 and 15h15.

What a family of four pays

Prices are per person, so the sums are easy. For two adults and two children aged 6 or over, the numbers before the 5% reader discount look like this.

  • Seal Island Boat Trip for four: 4 × R120 = R480.
  • 1 Hour Harbour Secrets Kayak Tour for four: 4 × R195 = R780.
  • 2 Hour Hout Bay Kayak Adventure for four: 4 × R495 = R1,980.
  • Seal Island Boat Trip and Kayak Combo for four: 4 × R545 = R2,180.

For comparison, a guided outdoor activity for a family of four in Lapland costs a good deal more, which makes a morning on the water in Cape Town feel like good value for what it is. Refreshments and guide gratuities are not included on the Hout Bay tours, so budget a little extra for snacks and a tip.

Making a day of it from Cape Town

If you are staying in the city, plan the transfer to Hout Bay first. It is 20 to 30 minutes by road, and Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the scenic routes into the bay. The tours start at the Karbonkelberg Tourism Adventure Centre, and none of the kayak tours listed here include transfers, so arrange a car or ride-hailing in advance.

A simple family plan is a 09h00 kayak, a harbour-side lunch afterwards and a quiet afternoon. The one-hour 1 Hour Harbour Secrets Kayak Tour5% off via our link starts at 13h30 and suits a family that wants to add something small to a lunch in Hout Bay. It shows the working harbour, the fishing boats and local landmarks, and the operator describes it as suitable for first-timers and families.

On another day, the Winelands are an easy contrast. The Stellenbosch Family Tour5% off via our link from Bikes ‘n Wines takes all ages and supplies child seats, buggies or children’s bikes, so one operator group covers a water day and a bike day for the same children.

Our Honest Final Word

Hout Bay is one of the easiest ways to put a Cape Town family on the water. The tours are short, the kayaks are stable doubles, the safety briefing is built in and the price per child is lower than many city activities. The two things to check before you book are your child’s swimming and the wind on the day. We have not done the tours ourselves, so use this guide as a planning aid and read the operator’s pages before you pay.
