Why Tromsø fits a long weekend
Tromsø is a compact city in northern Norway, well inside the Arctic Circle, and tours depart from one central meeting point: outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. That means you spend less time on logistics and more on the experience. Winter is the aurora season and the snow season, so a short break can include several memorable things without needing a long itinerary. Because we are not quoting flights, we will keep this guide free of fares and timetables; check airlines and your own calendar, and remember that many readers fly via a hub.
The key to a short trip is giving yourself more than one chance at clear sky. Four nights is a good minimum for that.
A sample four-night plan
Night one is for arriving, eating and sleeping. Do not book a long tour on arrival evening unless your flight lands early, because the chase can run late. On day two, take a relaxed daytime tour: the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is 5–6 hours with lunch included, or the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a shorter 3–4 hours at NOK 1,500 per person. That evening, if the forecast is promising, take the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. On day three, sleep in, wander the town, visit a museum or have a long lunch. Keep the evening free as a back-up chase night if you can rebook, or take the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for a quieter alternative. Day four is for a snowshoe morning if your flight is later: the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is 4 hours at 10:00.

This plan gives you two evenings for aurora and two daytimes for scenery without overloading any day.
Which tours, in which order
The chase is the most weather-dependent product, so book it early in the trip so you can try again if clouds win. Daytime tours are less sensitive: a winter fjord looks good under cloud too. If you can only afford one big tour, choose the chase. If you have two, add the fjord tour. Our two-nights guide covers when two chases make sense.
Costs at a glance
Using the operator’s listed prices, a couple doing the aurora chase and the fjord tour would pay NOK 4,600 for the first and NOK 4,200 for the second, in total NOK 8,800 before the 5% reader discount. Add the Arctic Snowshoe Hike for NOK 3,000 for two. These are tour costs only; flights, accommodation and food are separate.
| Tour | Price per person | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Lights Tour | NOK 2,300 | 5–8 hours |
| Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour | NOK 2,100 | 5–6 hours |
| Arctic Snowshoe Hike | NOK 1,500 | 4 hours |
| Aurora Snowshoe Hike | NOK 1,500 | 4 hours |
What to pack
You do not need to buy a full arctic wardrobe. The chase includes a winter suit, but you need good boots, warm socks, thermal layers, gloves and a hat. For daytime tours dress in layers and bring a windproof jacket. Hand warmers help for night standing. Our what-to-wear guide has a checklist, and it applies as well to Dutch and Belgian winters as to northern Norway, only colder.
Arrival day and the first evening
Tromsø’s airport sits on the same island as the city centre, so you reach your hotel quickly, but arrival day still deserves a gentle plan. Collect your bags, check in, and take a short walk to see the harbour and the main street while there is still some light. Eat a proper meal early, charge your devices and lay out your clothes for the next day. If you are a keen first-timer and arrive early enough, you could still be tempted by an evening tour, but we would resist it. The northern lights chase can run until the early hours, and a long travel day before it is a tiring combination. Better to start fresh on night two.
Look at where your hotel is relative to Clarion Hotel The Edge, the standard pickup point. Most central hotels are within walking distance, which makes evening departures easy.

Readers from the Low Countries are used to damp, grey winters with temperatures near freezing. Tromsø is milder than many people expect for its latitude thanks to the Gulf Stream, but it is a different kind of winter: more snow, longer darkness, and sharper cold once you leave the coast. Wind matters more than the thermometer. On the chase, you may stand still at an inland spot where it is colder than in town, which is why the included winter suit and hot drinks matter. Do not rely on a city coat and trainers. Waterproof, insulated boots and wool socks make the biggest difference.
Daylight is limited in midwinter, so build your plan around short days. Daytime tours leave at 10:00, which lines up with the best light.
What to do between the tours
Four nights leave free hours. Tromsø has museums, cafés, the harbour front, and walks across the bridge to the cathedral area. Cable-car and viewpoint visits depend on conditions, so check opening details locally. You can also add a restful afternoon in a sauna or a café; we would not cram in more tours simply because they exist. Free time is part of the trip, and the aurora tour is easier to enjoy when you are not already exhausted.
If you want one more bookable activity, the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the shortest option at 3–4 hours and works on the same day as a late lunch.
When to book for a winter weekend
The operator’s calendar is live, so you see which dates remain. In general, the longer you plan ahead, the more choice you have, particularly around school holidays. Keep your tickets flexible where you can. The tours’ cancellation rule gives a full refund more than 48 hours before departure, which lets you rebook if the forecast turns against a particular night, within what the operator’s calendar allows.
Travelling as a family or a group of friends
For friends or relatives travelling together, consider the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 15,000 per group (2–8 guests, larger on request). It starts at 19:00 with a pickup location you choose at checkout, and it is listed for all ages. For six people the cost works out to NOK 2,500 each. That is slightly above the shared price but gives you your own vehicle and pace. For groups of eight it is NOK 1,875 each, below the shared ticket. See our cost-per-person guide.
