The Best Time to Rent a Campervan in Denmark

Camping Scandinavia Hungrytravelfamily

If you are trying to pin down the best time for a campervan in Denmark, the short version is May or September. The longer version depends on what you want from the trip: warmth, quiet, low prices, open campsites or long evenings.

We live in Rovaniemi, where winter means proper snow and the sun disappears for weeks, so we judge a Danish season differently from most people. A damp 3°C December looks mild to us, but we know it is not what most holiday campers picture. This guide walks through the year honestly, using CampervanPlanet’s Denmark seasonal guide for the facts and our own travel sense for the verdict.

Short Answer

May and September are the sweet spot: mild weather, open campsites and lower rates than the June to August peak. April and October are quiet shoulders, and November to March is for hardy travellers who accept dark, cold days and closed campsites. Our reader code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout.

The quick answer, and why it holds

Denmark’s campervan season broadly runs from May to October. Within that, CampervanPlanet’s guide marks May and September as the best-value months and June to August as the priciest. That fits what we would expect: school holidays and midsummer fill the coastal campsites, prices follow demand and the weather, while better, is still windy and showery.

Because the country is small, the weather difference between months matters more than the geography. You are never more than a few hours from the sea, and the coast always has wind. What changes is how comfortable that wind is, how many campsites are open and what you pay.

A simple way to read the year: think of price, weather and choice of campsites as three dials that never line up perfectly. In July the weather dial is highest but so is the price dial and the crowding. In January price drops and almost everything else drops with it. May and September are the months when the three sit closest to a sensible middle, which is why we keep coming back to them.

If you want the comparison across Nordic countries, our piece on the best time to rent a campervan in Sweden follows the same structure, and our campervan rental guide introduces the basics.

May: fresh, green and good value

May is, for us, the best all-round month. The guide gives temperatures of about 12–18°C for May and September, which is comfortable for walking and cycling but not yet beach weather. The countryside is green, the days are long and the roads are quieter than they will be by midsummer.

The reason to book a campervan in May is the value. It is one of the two best-priced months, and campsites are open. You also dodge the school-holiday rush that fills the coastal pitches from late June.

The only watch-out is the weather. It can be cool, windy and showery, so we would choose a van with a heater and pack waterproofs. If you can live with that, May gives you almost everything July does at a lower price.

It is also an easy month for the classic routes. The Copenhagen and North Zealand loop and the Møns Klint run are both marked as best in May and September.

June to August: warmest, busiest, priciest

This is high season. The guide describes the odds of good weather as at their best, but it also says it stays windy and showery, and that this stretch is the priciest and most crowded. Sankt Hans, or Midsummer Eve, falls on 23 June and the Danish school holidays fill coastal campsites quickly.

If you want to swim, sit outside until late and see Denmark at its liveliest, summer is the answer. The Baltic coast and Funen are calmer and family-friendly, while the North Sea coast has wide sands and more wind.

Our advice is to book early. Campervans and the best coastal pitches go first, and last-minute July searches are where prices bite. Compare dates on CampervanPlanet’s Denmark page and see how much a few days either side moves the total.

September: our personal favourite

September brings mellow, golden light, seas that still hold some warmth and most campsites open. Rates drop noticeably compared with summer, and the roads empty a little. Temperatures are again around 12–18°C.

It is an excellent month for island hopping and slow coastal drives. The Funen and LEGOLAND route from Copenhagen to Aarhus, about 320 km, is marked best in May and September, and the Jutland west coast is dramatic and uncrowded as the holidaymakers leave.

We would pick September over May if we wanted warmer seas, May over September if we wanted longer, fresher days. Either way, you are paying less than in July for most of what makes Denmark appealing.

One more thing: because September is popular with people who know the trick, popular vehicles can still sell out, so book a few months ahead.

April and October: quiet shoulders

April brings early spring greenery and the first campsites reopening, but the weather is cool, wet and windy. October gives colour and empties the roads, though many campsites are winding down for the season. Both months are quiet and can offer low rates.

The catch is opening dates. Because the Danish campsite season broadly runs May to October, you need to confirm where you can actually stay before committing to a route. Aires can fill some of the gaps, but check them too.

We would only choose these months if flexibility matters more than comfort, or if you are an experienced camper who packs layers and does not mind a short day. For a first Danish campervan trip, we would rather push to May or September.

November to March: for the hardy

The guide’s verdict is dark, cold and cosy, and that is fair. Temperatures run from about -2°C to 5°C, with only roughly seven to nine hours of daylight and about seven in December. Most campsites close, so you need to check which are open and offer electric hook-up before you book a winter van.

Coming from Lapland, we find that range almost gentle, but we also know that a damp Danish winter feels colder than the number suggests. The draw is hygge, Copenhagen’s Christmas atmosphere and Tivoli’s Christmas market, and bargain rental rates.

It is a trip for experienced cold-weather campers who want city breaks more than coastal drives. If that is you, treat the van as a base and plan around open sites rather than a long route. If it is not, a hotel is the more comfortable winter choice.

Our picks by traveller type, and when to book

For most people, our pick is September, or May if you prefer long days. For families who need school-holiday dates, accept the summer premium and book early. For couples who want a quiet trip, April or October can work if you check campsite opening. For winter, only go if you are comfortable in the cold.

If your dates are fixed by work or school, do not despair. Even in July you can soften the bill by starting your rental midweek, avoiding Sankt Hans weekend, and choosing a compact van. Our rule is to decide the month first, then the vehicle, then the route, because it is much easier to bend a route around a good-value month than the other way round.

On timing, book several months ahead for summer and for September, and use the live price search to compare nearby dates. The cheapest day of the week to start can differ from what you expect.
