Is Lanzarote Worth It in Winter? Our Honest Answer on Sun, Wind, Sea Temperature and Real Prices (With 5% Off)

We live in Rovaniemi, where January means −20 °C and a few hours of daylight, so we have a biased view of what counts as warm. Here is a fair answer to whether Lanzarote is worth a winter week: the temperatures, the wind, the sea, who it suits, and what a family home really cost in the booking engine.

Short answer

Yes, for most people who want reliable winter daylight and mild weather, with caveats. Lanzarote Retreats’ weather table shows average highs of 22 °C in November, 20 °C in December and 18 °C in January and February, with little rain; the catch is wind, cool evenings, no heating in most homes and a sea that is brisk rather than warm. If you can live with that, the island is one of the easiest winter-sun trips in Europe. The Short Answer, From a Family That Lives Above the Arctic Circle

A fair warning first: our idea of a warm January is anything above zero. We live in Rovaniemi, and Lanzarote’s January average of 18 °C feels like another planet. We have not stayed in any of the homes in this article — we research Lanzarote Retreats and send readers — so we cannot report on our own suntans. What we can do is read the operator’s weather table and its booking engine, and think about who gets good value from a winter week and who should pick somewhere else.

Our verdict is that Lanzarote is worth it in winter if your aim is daylight, walking, a calm beach morning and an outdoor lunch, rather than a guaranteed swim in warm water. It is not worth it if you want a hot-weather holiday in January. Lanzarote is a mild island in winter, not a hot one, and being honest about that is the best way to avoid disappointment.

What the Weather Is Actually Like, Month by Month

Lanzarote Retreats publishes an average-temperature and rainfall table on its property pages. We have used it as our source, and it is an average, not a forecast.

The operator’s general line is that temperatures run around 18–28 °C all year, so air conditioning and heating are not usually needed. Two comments from us. First, December is the wettest month on the table, and November is the warmest of the winter months, so November is the best value for a trip that hopes for warmth. Second, an 18 °C average means some days are cooler, and evenings in particular. The packing advice from the operator is a jumper or fleece and a light waterproof, which we would follow. Sun protection still matters in winter, as the sun on this island is strong.

The Wind, the Sea and the Honest Downsides

Here is what the brochures tend to skim over. Lanzarote is windy: the trade winds blow on many days, and now and then the island gets calima, a Saharan haze that brings dust and heat. A windy day on a north-facing beach can feel cold, and the Atlantic swell on exposed beaches means you should read the conditions rather than assume the sea is a swimming pool.

The sea is roughly 18 to 22 °C in winter — general knowledge, not an operator figure. That is fine for children who paddle, for a quick dip, and for wetsuit surfers, and not comfortable for long swims unless you are used to cold water. We come from a country where people swim in holes in the ice, so we are not the best judges, but for most of our readers it means the pool matters more than the sea.

That is why the pool detail on each Lanzarote Retreats page is worth reading. The operator says the pools at Finca de Arrieta and Villa Palacio are solar-heated, as are Casa Lili’s shared pool and the plunge pool at The Beach House; Villa Las Palmitas and Finca Panorama have electrically heated pools; Casa Pino has a solar cover; and Villa Ocean Bliss is unheated. If a winter swim is a priority, tick that box before anything else.

Who Lanzarote in Winter Suits, and Who It Doesn't

It suits families with children who like beaches, playgrounds and animals, where mornings can be spent outside and the afternoon at the pool. It suits couples who want walking, volcanic scenery and good fish restaurants. It suits remote workers escaping a dark winter, and anyone coming from northern Europe: from Finland it is roughly a six-hour flight, from the UK about four, and the island is on the same time as the UK in winter, two hours behind Finland, so there is no jet lag.

It suits less well people who need 28 °C and a hot sea, people who dislike wind, and anyone who wants nightlife and big hotel entertainment. It also asks something of you if you pick the off-grid option. At Finca de Arrieta the operator says there is no TV, no dishwasher, no electric kettle and no iron in the homes because the electricity comes from solar panels with generator back-up, and there is no heating or air conditioning. We think that is a feature for the right family, and a deal-breaker for the wrong one.

Where We'd Stay: Three Kinds of Winter Base

The island splits roughly into a quiet north, a resort-style middle and a busier south. For winter, Lanzarote Retreats gives you a choice of each.

North, off-grid and by the sea. Finca de Arrieta is 21 homes at Arrieta, a 300 m track from the golden Playa de la Garita beach and about 20 km from Arrecife airport. Children 17 and under stay free, according to the operator, and there is a shared solar-heated 13 m × 2.5 m pool. The Eco Luxury Villa5% off · code inside takes 4 adults plus 2 children; the Eco Barn5% off · code inside takes 2 adults plus 3 children and was quoted at €1,172 for 10–17 January 2027.

Middle, no car needed. In Costa Teguise, The Beach House5% off · code inside (a solar-heated plunge pool, 100 m from the sand) was quoted at €1,914 for 10–17 January 2027, and the Ocean View Penthouse5% off · code inside at €1,715 for the same week. Costa Teguise has Las Cucharas beach, Pueblo Marinero, a Friday market, an aquarium and an aquapark.

South, with a heated pool. Villa Las Palmitas5% off · code inside has an electrically heated pool and hot tub six minutes’ drive from Puerto Calero, and was quoted at €2,989 for 10–17 January 2027.

The pattern is clear. November costs noticeably less than January, so flexible families can save a few hundred euros by going early. A one-bedroom home like the Garden Cottage is a budget route for a family of four with the Buena Vista bedroom option, while the Surf Pod is the cheapest studio in the Costa Teguise range. Christmas and New Year are the peak of the peak, and are excluded from the first of our two codes.

Booking Tips: Dates, Deposits and the Code Windows

Booking is direct with Lanzarote Retreats at lanzaroteretreats.com or by WhatsApp. A 30% non-refundable deposit is due at booking, and the balance is due 30 days before arrival. Cancelling after the deposit forfeits it, and inside 30 days the operator keeps the full amount, so we would take travel insurance. Check-in is from 16:00 and check-out is by 10:00. At Finca de Arrieta the minimum stay is 3 nights, or 2 nights if you arrive within a month, with flexible arrival days.

One more perk: for Finca de Arrieta, the operator arranges private airport transfers and a complimentary 5-seater car for up to 7 days; ask for it at least 48 hours before arrival.

Our reader discount comes as two codes, because the operator set them up by date. Use HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for stays until 18 December 2026 (Christmas and New Year excluded) or HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY275 for stays from January 2027 — 5% off either way. Enter the one that matches your dates in the discount-code field at checkout. On the €1,656 week at the Eco Luxury Villa, that is roughly €83 off.

Our Shortlist and a Place to Start

If you are still choosing, our hub page on Stays in Lanzarote lists the homes we have reviewed with their sleeping numbers and live links. From the quotes above, we would start with the Eco Luxury Villa for a family of four to six, the Eco Barn for two adults with three children, and The Beach House if you want to leave the car at the airport.
