Why Snowshoeing Is the Best Daytime Activity in Tromsø for Non-Skiers

Here is the problem with winter in Tromsø: the famous things — aurora chases, husky sledding, whale safaris — are at night, expensive, or both. Daytime is long stretches of blue light and a town you can walk across in twenty minutes. Skiing is the Norwegian answer, but a first attempt at cross-country on an icy track at 69° north will not be a holiday highlight.

Snowshoes fix that. There is no technique to learn: you strap them to your own winter boots, you walk, and the big footprint keeps you on top of snow that would otherwise swallow you to the hip. Within five minutes everyone is moving at the same speed. From our Arctic winters in Finnish Lapland, snowshoeing is the activity we hand to visiting grandparents, teenagers and friends who think “outdoorsy” means a brisk walk to a café — and it is the one they all talk about afterwards.

The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 works so well as a Tromsø day because of the setting: a short drive and you are off the road, in silence, looking down on fjords and across at snow-covered peaks. The operator mentions reindeer, foxes and seabirds along the way; we would not promise them, but the view does not need help.

How Hard Is It? Difficulty and Fitness, Honestly

The standard hike is listed as 4 hours, and that includes the transfer from Tromsø and back, so the time on snow is shorter. It is a walk, not a climb. There are gentle ascents — the best views are uphill — but the guide sets the pace for the slowest person and stops often for photos.

What makes snowshoeing feel harder than walking is the gait, not the terrain: you walk slightly wider and lift your feet a little higher, which uses muscles you forget you have. If you can walk comfortably for a couple of hours on a hilly trail at home, you can do this. If you have a knee that complains on descents, tell the guide at the start; the poles help a great deal.

Weather is the real variable. A calm, sunny February day on snowshoes is one of the most pleasant things you can do outdoors; a windy day with blowing snow is a different hike, and you will want every layer in the packing list below. The operator runs the tour whenever conditions are safe; if they cancel, you are rebooked or refunded.

The Day, Hour by Hour

10:00 — Pickup. Outside Clarion Hotel The Edge on the harbour front; look for a black Mercedes. Arrive a few minutes early, dressed to walk, boots on. Groups are 2–8 guests.

10:00–10:45 — The transfer. The trailhead depends on snow and weather that day, so the guide chooses it in the morning. The drive is a scenic tour in itself, and the guide uses it to explain the day and size up the group.

10:45–11:00 — Gearing up. Snowshoes and poles are fitted at the trailhead; one demonstration is all it takes. Leave what you do not need in the vehicle.

11:00–13:15 — The hike. A loop or an out-and-back with a viewpoint as the goal, plenty of pauses, and the guide talking about the landscape, the wildlife and how people live up here. The further from the road, the quieter it gets — in the polar night, with the sky turning pink over the fjord, it is genuinely moving.

13:15–14:00 — Back to Tromsø. Snowshoes off, into the warm vehicle, drop-off at the same spot in time for a late lunch, with the whole evening free. Treat these times as a guide; the only fixed points are the 10:00 pickup and the 4-hour total.

What's Included for NOK 1,500

The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is priced at NOK 1,500 per person. According to the operator’s listing, that covers:

  • A local guide for the full 4 hours
  • Transport from central Tromsø to the trailhead and back (the duration includes the transfer)
  • Snowshoes and poles — you do not need to bring or rent any equipment

Not included, or not mentioned in the listing, so plan for it yourself:

  • Winter clothing. There is no thermal suit on this tour, unlike the northern lights chase. You hike in your own layers and your own boots.
  • Food and drink. The daytime listing does not mention snacks, so put a thermos and something to eat in your bag. The evening Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, by contrast, lists snacks and a hot drink as included.

Cancellation on the shared tour: a full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure; inside 48 hours you pay the full amount.

Kids, Ages and the Private Snowshoe Hike for Families

The shared hike is recommended for ages 10 and up. In our experience that is about right: a ten-year-old who likes being outside will enjoy four hours of snowshoeing, while a six-year-old will enjoy forty minutes and then need carrying. Children need proper insulated winter boots — snowshoes attach to normal boots, but the boots have to be warm.

If you are a family of four or more, or a group of friends, price the Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 before booking the shared one. It is NOK 12,000 for the group, the same 4-hour format and the same 10+ recommendation. With six people that is NOK 2,000 each; with eight it is NOK 1,500 each, identical to the shared price, except the guide is yours. That matters with children: a private guide can turn around when the youngest has had enough, choose a flatter route, or build in a snowball fight without seven strangers waiting.

One honest note: going private does not lower the age recommendation. It is a tool for families with older children and mixed fitness, not a way to bring a toddler. For younger kids, Legendary Adventure’s all-ages private tours — the Sommarøy fjord drive, the private northern lights chase — are the better fit.

The Other Three Snowshoe Tours: Advanced and Aurora

Legendary Adventure runs four snowshoe products, and choosing the right one is most of the decision.

The Advanced snowshoe adventure covers more ground over 6 hours.
The Advanced snowshoe adventure covers more ground over 6 hours. Photo: Legendary Adventure

Arctic Snowshoe Adventure (Advanced)5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — NOK 2,100, 6 hours including transfer, ages 16+. For people who read the standard hike’s description and thought “that sounds easy”. Two more hours means more climbing and distance, and the 16+ limit tells you the operator means it. If you hike regularly at home, book this instead of the 4-hour hike — you will not want both.

Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — NOK 1,500, 4 hours, ages 10+, pickup 18:30. The evening version: same equipment and length, but you walk by headtorch under the stars and, with luck, the northern lights. It includes the guide, Mercedes minivan transport, snowshoe rental, snacks and a hot drink. One caveat: a hike cannot drive 200 km to find clear sky the way a chase can, so on a cloudy night you get a beautiful night walk and no lights. Groups can book the Private Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for NOK 12,000.

Combining the Snowshoe Hike With the Northern Lights Tour on the Same Day

This is the combination we would book for a short Tromsø trip, and the timings fit almost perfectly. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 and has you back in the city by about 14:00. The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — the operator’s minibus chase that drives wherever the sky is clear — picks up from the same spot at 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October). That leaves five hours for lunch, a nap and a change of socks.

The Aurora Snowshoe Hike is the night-time version of the same walk.

The energy budget works: the hike is tiring but not exhausting, and the chase is mostly sitting in a warm van with a winter suit, a hot meal and a campfire. We would not stack the Advanced hike with a chase, or do the day hike and the Aurora Snowshoe Hike on the same date — eight hours on snowshoes is too much. With two days, the classic order is snowshoes and chase on day one, a fjord drive to Sommarøy or a lie-in on day two. Book the chase for the first night so a cloudy evening still leaves a second attempt.

What to Pack for a Tromsø Snowshoe Hike

Because no clothing is provided, the packing list matters more than on most Tromsø tours. From our Arctic winters, this is what we would wear and carry for four hours on snowshoes:

  • Boots: insulated, waterproof winter boots with ankle support. Trainers or fashion boots will not do.
  • Base layer: merino or synthetic top and leggings. Never cotton — you will sweat on the climbs and cotton stays wet.
  • Mid layer: fleece or wool jumper.
  • Outer layer: windproof, water-resistant jacket and ski trousers or over-trousers; snow sprays up from the snowshoes onto your legs.
  • Hands and head: warm mittens or gloves you can grip poles in, a hat that covers the ears, a buff for your face.
  • Socks: thick wool, with a spare pair in the bag for the drive home.
  • Small backpack: a thermos, a snack, water, sunglasses on bright days, sunscreen in March and April, and a phone in an inside pocket where the cold cannot kill the battery.

Dress so you are slightly cool when you start walking. If you are toasty at the trailhead you will overheat ten minutes up the hill, and wet layers are what make people cold.

Our Honest Final Word

Snowshoeing is the Arctic activity with the best ratio of experience to effort, cost and skill, and a 4-hour guided hike out of Tromsø is exactly the right dose for a first time. You get the mountains, the fjord views and the silence without needing to ski, without a big budget, and still with the whole evening free for the lights. Fit hikers should take the Advanced version instead; families with children of ten and up should price the private hike; everyone else should book the standard one and pack good boots.
