San Diego RV Rental: Joshua Tree, Anza-Borrego and Big Bear

Mild winters, desert wildflowers, a coastal highway and a $86 starting price make San Diego one of the best places in the USA to hire an RV between November and March. Here is the plan we would follow.

If you live somewhere dark and cold in November, San Diego is a good answer to a simple question: where can I get warm, quickly, and see something new? The city has one of the mildest climates in the United States, with daytime temperatures that stay pleasant through winter, and within a few hours of driving you can be at the edge of the Colorado Desert, among Joshua trees or beside a mountain lake.

We live in Rovaniemi, so winter sun is exactly the sort of trip we think about at this time of year. This is a researched planning guide rather than a trip report: we have gone through the live prices and routes on the CampervanPlanet San Diego page and thought about how we would use an RV from here.

Short Answer

CampervanPlanet’s booking engine showed the cheapest 7-night RV from San Diego at $86 a day ($598 for the week) for pick-ups on 10 November 2026 and 9 March 2027, and $113 a day ($790 a week) for 8 June 2027. Why San Diego for a winter RV trip

San Diego has the combination that winter-sun travellers look for: an international airport close to the city, a huge supermarket culture for stocking the fridge, and a climate that allows you to camp comfortably in winter. The coast can be foggy in early summer, but between November and March it is usually bright and mild, with cool nights. The desert to the east is warm during the day and cold after dark.

The price helps too. The cheapest RV on the page starts at $86 a day in November and March, much lower than the summer rate, and for a week-long trip that is a total of $598 for the vehicle alone. That does not include insurance extras, fuel, campsite fees or the mileage allowance, so treat it as a floor. If you want to compare with the other big Californian starting point, our Los Angeles RV road trips and costs guide is a good companion, and our campervan rental guide covers the basics.

Four routes from San Diego

The San Diego page lists four itineraries. We would choose according to the number of days we had.

San Diego to Anza-Borrego and the Salton Sea

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the largest state park in California, and in a good spring the wildflowers turn the desert floor into a carpet of colour. In winter it is simply quiet, with wide skies and extraordinary stars. The Salton Sea is a strange, shrunken lake with a post-industrial feel that photographers love. This is a good two-to-three day loop with long, empty roads.

San Diego to Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree is a landscape of boulders and twisted trees at the meeting of two deserts. Campgrounds in the park are popular and often fill, so book ahead for weekends. Nights are cold in winter and can drop below freezing, so you need a heater that you trust. Plan for three or four days.

San Diego to Big Bear Lake and the mountain loop

Not what most people expect from Southern California: pine forests, a lake and, in winter, snow. Mountain roads can require chains in winter, so ask your rental company about its policy on snow and mountain driving before you head up.

Coastal cruise to Santa Barbara

Head north along the Pacific coast through Orange County and Los Angeles to Santa Barbara. It is the beach-town version of a road trip, with campgrounds on the sand and plenty of places to eat. Expect heavy traffic around Los Angeles.

Prices and seasons

CampervanPlanet states that its prices come from a live search in the booking engine in October 2026, for the cheapest vehicle on a 7-night rental from the San Diego (SND) location. That gives $86 per day for pick-up on 10 November 2026 and 9 March 2027 (a $598 week) and $113 per day ($790 per week) for 8 June 2027. All are in US dollars.

These are the cheapest vehicles. A larger motorhome costs more, and extras such as generator hours, kitchen kits, extra drivers and one-way fees increase the total. The nationwide figures on the same page give typical rates of about $104 a day in winter and $173 in summer. For a more detailed comparison with another large hub, see the Los Angeles RV rental page.

Driving rules and RV practicalities

Two California rules are worth knowing before you set off. The first is that RVs are limited to 55 mph (89 km/h) on California highways, even where cars may drive 65 to 70 mph, according to the information on the San Diego page. The second is that school zones usually have a speed limit of 25 mph (40 km/h) when children are present, as do many residential areas. Both matter on long drives.

Coastal parking is a challenge in summer. Beach car parks often have height or length limits and fill early. In the desert, fuel stations are less frequent, so fill the tank when you can. Heading east, remember that the roads climb to over 1,000 metres at some points, and the vehicle may use more fuel than you expect.

Check the age and licence conditions on the offer you choose, since they vary between rental companies.

Camping near San Diego

Camping options in the region split into three types. Beachfront and coastal campgrounds are the most popular and need reservations well ahead, particularly at weekends. Desert and mountain campgrounds are quieter in winter, and some desert state park campsites are first come, first served. Private RV parks, with hookups for electricity, water and sewage, are the practical option in cities, and are useful when you need to empty tanks and charge devices.

Booking tip: if you plan a trip across several California campgrounds, build the plan before you reserve the RV, not afterwards. The most scenic spots sell out months ahead. Our guide to RV rental companies in Las Vegas explains how the companies differ, which is useful context if you are tempted to combine California and Nevada in one trip.

When to go

November to March is the sweet spot for the desert and the southern coast. Spring (March to May) brings wildflowers, if rainfall has been good, and longer days. Summer is hot in the desert and crowded on the coast. If your dates are flexible, early March offers the best combination: the $86 starting price on the page, warm weather and smaller crowds than the school holidays.
