If you want to see the American West by RV, there are a handful of cities that make sense as a starting point, and Salt Lake City is one of the best. It is a proper international airport with direct flights from many hubs, and within a day’s drive you can reach Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion, collectively known as Utah’s Mighty Five, with Yellowstone and Grand Teton to the north.

We are based in Rovaniemi, so this is a researched planning guide rather than a diary of our own trip. We have looked at the live prices and routes on the CampervanPlanet Salt Lake City page and worked out how we would approach the trip as a family that likes long days, big landscapes and as few motel nights as possible.

Short Answer

CampervanPlanet’s booking engine showed the cheapest 7-night RV from Salt Lake City at $86 a day ($602 for the week) for a 10 November 2026 or 9 March 2027 pick-up, and $122 a day ($850 a week) for 8 June 2027. Why start in Salt Lake City

Utah’s capital sits between the Wasatch mountains and the Great Salt Lake, and it is far enough from the coast to be dramatically cheaper than a Californian start. It works as the hub for three very different trips: south to the red-rock desert, north to the geysers and bison of Yellowstone, or east towards Colorado and the Rockies.

There is another reason it makes sense: distance. Many American national-park routes involve a long, tiring first and last day. From here, Moab is about four hours away, Zion roughly four, and the road to Yellowstone just over five to the west entrance. That means you can collect the RV, shop at a big supermarket, and be camping before dark on day one.

Four routes from Salt Lake City

CampervanPlanet lists four itineraries that start in the city. We would choose between them according to how many days we have.

Salt Lake City to Moab and Arches (4-5 days)

The classic first trip. Drive south-east through Price, then spend a couple of days around Moab, with Arches National Park in the morning (timed-entry rules can apply in peak season, so check the park’s website) and Canyonlands for sunsets. Moab has plenty of RV parks with hookups if you want a shower and laundry day.

Salt Lake City to Zion and Bryce Canyon (5-7 days)

This route takes you down through central Utah to two of the most photographed parks in the country. Zion has narrow roads and size limits in parts of the park, so ask your rental company and the park service about the maximum vehicle length before you commit to a big motorhome. Bryce Canyon is high and cold in the mornings even in summer.

Salt Lake City to Yellowstone and Grand Teton (7-10 days)

Head north through Idaho into Wyoming. Yellowstone is huge and slow to drive, with wildlife jams that can add an hour to a short leg. Plan on at least three nights in and around the park, then a day or two in Grand Teton. Summer is busy and campgrounds fill months ahead; shoulder seasons are quieter but some roads close.

Utah’s Mighty Five grand loop (8-12 days)

The page also describes a full loop of all five Utah parks, which is how we would use a two-week trip. It covers Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion, with room for scenic byways like Highway 12 between them. It is a lot of driving, but each leg is rewarding.

Prices and seasons

CampervanPlanet states that the figures on its page come from a live search in its booking engine in October 2026, for the cheapest vehicle on a 7-night rental from Salt Lake City. It shows $86 per day for 10 November 2026 and 9 March 2027 (a $602 week), rising to $122 per day ($850 per week) for 8 June 2027. Those figures are in US dollars and are the cheapest vehicle, so a larger Class C motorhome will cost more, and extras such as generator use, bedding and kitchen kits add to the bill.

The same page gives wider United States averages of roughly $104 a day in winter and $173 in summer, based on 36 vehicles from seven companies. For more detail on how those numbers move, our overview of US RV rental prices may help.

Our takeaway: the cheapest time to rent an RV for a Utah trip is outside school holidays, and spring and autumn are better for the desert anyway. Summer in the red-rock parks is extremely hot, often above 38 °C (100 °F) at lower elevations.

Camping, hookups and park logistics

The big question for American RV travel is where to sleep. In national parks, campgrounds are cheap but reservations open months ahead through the official booking systems, and the best ones disappear quickly. Outside parks, you will find commercial RV parks with water, electric and sewer hookups, state-park campgrounds, and in some areas dispersed camping on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

A few practical notes we always make:

  • Dump stations: know where you will empty tanks, and ask your rental company what the policy is on return.
  • Altitude and heat: desert days can be extremely hot, mountain nights can be freezing. Check the forecast every morning.
  • Park passes: the annual America the Beautiful pass can pay for itself on a trip with several national parks.
  • Fuel and groceries: stock up in bigger towns, since services thin out fast in the desert.

Driving an RV in the USA

If you are used to European roads, American RVs feel large, but the roads are wide and slow, and automatic gearboxes make them easy to handle. Speed limits on highways are typically 65 to 80 mph depending on the state, and in Utah that can mean rural interstate limits above 75 mph. Slow down if you are not comfortable: nobody is in a hurry to get past you.

Driving licence and age rules differ by rental company, with many asking for a minimum age of 21 or 25 and a licence held for a year. Check the conditions shown on the offer before you pay. If you want a wider comparison between vehicle types, we have a guide to California national-park RV routes that also covers the practicalities.

When to go

Late April to mid-June and mid-September to late October are the best months for the Utah parks. The desert is manageable, the light is great and the parks are busy but not at peak. July and August bring heat and the highest prices. Winter is possible, with snow on the high plateaus, but some roads and facilities close. For Yellowstone, late May to September is the usual window, with the road network opening in stages.
