Two Windows: Christmas and Krokus

Belgium’s school year gives you natural gaps in the winter: the Christmas holidays over late December and early January, and the Krokus (carnival) break in February. Exact dates depend on your school and community, so check your own calendar before you book anything that cannot be changed.

Both periods are popular across Europe, which means flights and hotels to Tromsø tighten early. Our advice is to decide the dates this month and look at the live calendar for the northern-lights tour as soon as you do.

Getting There From Belgium

Flights from Belgium to Tromsø usually involve a connection, often via a Nordic hub, so allow a long travel day each way and do not schedule a tour on the evening of arrival unless your flight lands early in the afternoon. We would also avoid a departure on the morning after a late tour. Winter weather can delay flights, so a spare night at either end is cheap insurance.

Check the current flight options yourself, since schedules change by season; we do not quote timetables here.

How Many Nights?

Four nights is our minimum recommendation. It leaves room for two northern-lights attempts, a daytime activity and a slow day. With only two nights, you rely on a single clear evening. With six, you can add a second daytime activity and a spare night.

The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 costs NOK 2,300 per person, picks you up at 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, runs 5 to 8 hours and includes a local guide, a premium Mercedes-Benz, a winter suit and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. For a family of four with children aged 7 and over, two evenings is NOK 18,400 before discount.

Daytime Activities for Belgian Families

For the days between the lights, the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500 per person, 4 hours, ages 10+, 10:00 pickup) is a good active choice, and the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,100 per person, 5 to 6 hours, local lunch, ages 7+) suits families who would rather sit in comfort and enjoy the scenery. Small Group or Private for a Family?

For two adults and children aged 7 and over, the shared tour works well. For younger children, or for a larger family or group of friends, the private northern lights tour in Tromsø at NOK 15,000 per group lets you choose the pickup and set the pace. Both include the same equipment and food.

A Five-Night Plan From Belgium

NightPlan
Day 1Arrive, check in, simple dinner, early night
Day 2Slow morning, city walk; Northern Lights Tour in the evening
Day 3Late breakfast; quiet afternoon; rest
Day 4Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour (10:00) or snowshoe hike; second northern-lights attempt in the evening if you want one
Day 5Spare day or free time; packing
Day 6Departure

The point is the spare evening. If the first night is cloudy, you still have another try without rearranging flights.

Money: Prices Are in Norwegian Kroner

All prices on the operator’s pages are in Norwegian kroner (NOK), and you pay when you book online by card, so your bank handles the conversion. We do not quote exchange rates, because they change and we would rather you check the live amount at checkout. What we can do is show the NOK arithmetic: a family of four on the shared tour pays NOK 9,200 for one evening, or NOK 18,400 for two. The private tour is NOK 15,000 per group for one evening.

The 5% reader discount comes off at checkout when you enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field. On NOK 9,200 that is NOK 460. It is a modest saving, but it takes less than a minute and it applies to every tour booked online with the operator.

Remember the rules: a full refund more than 48 hours before departure, and 100% charged inside 48 hours. If your family travel dates may shift, wait until flights are confirmed.

What to Wear, From a Mild Belgian Winter

Belgian winters are often mild and damp, so the Arctic cold is a shock. The key is layers: a wool or synthetic base layer, a fleece or wool mid layer, and a windproof outer layer. Add insulated waterproof boots, thick socks, a hat that covers the ears and warm gloves. On the northern-lights tour a winter suit is included, but your layers underneath are what keep you warm during long waits. For the snowshoe hike, no suit is provided, so bring your own outer layers.

Children need the same system in smaller sizes, and a spare pair of mittens is a good idea. Hand warmers are cheap and help on long nights outdoors.

Booking Order: What to Do First

  1. Fix the holiday dates with your school and employer.
  2. Check the live calendar for the northern-lights tour and note two possible evenings.
  3. Book flights and a hotel that fit those evenings.
  4. Book the northern-lights tour, then add a daytime activity.
  5. Keep one evening free as a spare.

Doing it in this order stops you from locking in non-refundable flights that do not match any available tour. Tours are limited in number, so it is the tour dates that are likely to sell out first.

If you want more ideas for the days in between, browse our Tromsø activities hub. And if you are travelling with young children, take the age recommendations seriously: the shared tour is 7 and up, while the private tour is listed for all ages.

How to Book With the Hungrytravelfamily Discount

Booking is direct with Legendary Adventure (Legendary Group AS, Tromsø) through their FareHarbor calendar, so your payment and your booking terms are with the operator, not with us. Open Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, pick a date and the number of guests, and on the checkout page type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 into the promo-code field. The 5% comes off before you pay. The same code works on Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 and on every other Legendary Adventure tour booked online.

Cancellation is the same across these tours: a full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure, and 100% charged inside 48 hours. Full transparency: we are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a small commission on bookings made with our code. It never changes your price.
