Book Your Tromsø Northern Lights Tour Now or Wait? A Calm Plan for December and January Trips

Tour dates feel cheap to postpone and annoying to lose. This is how we think about booking a Tromsø northern lights tour four to eight weeks before a December or January trip: which dates to lock first, which to keep flexible, and how to book with 5% off.

Short answer

If your trip is in December or January, book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 now for one evening and keep a second evening open. Book early enough to choose your date, late enough to see a weather pattern for your stay. The tour is NOK 2,300 per person, 5–8 hours, pickup 18:30 or 19:00 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. Type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field at checkout for 5% off.

Why Waiting Costs More Than It Saves

Tromsø is not a destination where you can turn up and rely on a spare seat on the best nights. Groups on the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 are 2–8 guests, which is why the experience works, and also why the calendar is finite. Holiday weeks fill first, and nights near Christmas and New Year are the first to go.

On the other side, the tour price does not rise because you book early, and the cancellation rule gives you a long window: full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure. That asymmetry is the whole argument. Booking early costs you nothing until two days before; waiting can cost you the date you wanted.

The Booking Window We Would Use

For a trip four to eight weeks away, we would book the first northern lights night now. For a trip in the first half of December, that means this week. For January, you have a little more room, but not much if you travel in the first days of the year. Lock in one chase, then use the cancellation rule to keep flexibility.

Then decide how many nights you want to spend chasing. For a stay of three nights or more, two chase evenings give you a second chance if clouds win the first. Put the first chase on night two rather than night one, because flights, luggage and tiredness can make the first evening a poor one.

Which Evenings to Lock First

Our order of priority: first, the evening of your second night; second, any evening during a public holiday week; third, the final night before a morning flight only if you are sure you can sleep on the plane. Avoid placing the chase on the night before an early departure. The tour lasts 5–8 hours and returns when the sky is done, not at a fixed time.

If you are a group of four or more, price the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 too: NOK 15,000 per group, up to 8 guests, all ages, pickup location chosen at checkout. Private departs at 19:00 and gives you a vehicle and guide that follow your pace.

Daytime Tours Can Wait a Little

The daytime tours are the ones to keep flexible. The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,100 per person, 5–6 hours, 10:00 pickup) and the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500 per person, 4 hours, 10:00 pickup) both run through the winter, and you can fit them around the weather and your mood. Book them once you know which day you want free, but not on the very last day.

A daytime tour on the same date as a northern lights chase is possible, but keep a rest afternoon. Many families make the mistake of stacking a 10:00 tour and a 19:00 chase on the same day and are exhausted by the second.

What If the Forecast Looks Bad?

A poor forecast three weeks out tells you nothing. A poor forecast for the specific night of your tour tells you a little, and the operator’s answer is the route: guides drive to open sky when they can. So we do not suggest rebooking on weather alone. Rather, plan for two chances and expect that one of them may be cloudy.

If you want a lighter second option, the evening Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500, 18:30 pickup, 4 hours) is a very different style of night, quieter and shorter, and it can be paired with a chase on another evening.

Cost Planning Without Surprises

For two adults, the shared Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 4,600 before discount. With 5% off, that is NOK 4,370. For a family of five, shared seats would be NOK 11,500, compared with NOK 15,000 for a private group of up to eight, so the private tour becomes interesting from about seven guests rather than five. Kids under 7 are not recommended on the shared tour; the private tour takes all ages.

These are straightforward numbers from the operator’s listing and our own arithmetic, not a promise of exchange rates or future prices.

A Worked Example: Five Nights in Early December

Imagine two adults landing on a Tuesday for five nights. Night one is arrival, dinner and an early sleep. On Wednesday morning you take the 10:00 Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500 per person, 4 hours including transfer) and have a long quiet afternoon. Wednesday evening, which is night two, is the first Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. Thursday is slow: late breakfast, a walk through the centre, an early night. Friday gives you the 10:00 Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, and Friday evening is a spare night in case Wednesday was cloudy and you want a second chase. Saturday is the flight home.

The point of the example is not the exact days but the shape. One aurora date is booked now, a second is decided from the weather as the trip approaches, and the daytime tours sit on the days that follow the late nights. Per person the three booked tours are NOK 2,300, NOK 1,500 and NOK 2,100 before the discount, so add up your party size at checkout before you commit.

Mistakes We See When People Leave It Late

The first mistake is booking the aurora for the last night. If cloud wins, you have no second chance and no slack. The second is stacking a 10:00 daytime tour and a 19:00 chase on the same day without a break; you arrive at the aurora tired and cold. The third is choosing the cheapest option purely on price and then finding that the pickup time or the length does not suit the family. The 5–8 hour chase, in particular, needs a sleepy child plan and an easy next morning.

The fourth mistake is assuming that all booking sites show the same availability or the same code behaviour. Our code works on Legendary Adventure’s own booking page, so that is where we send you. Open the calendar from the link, check the date, and the promo-code field is waiting at checkout.

How the Code Fits Into the Plan

Nothing about the 5% changes the plan; it simply reduces the bill. Add your tours to the calendar one by one, enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for each booking, and check the total shows the discount before paying. If you book more than one tour, you repeat the code each time. Keep your confirmation emails together, because they list the pickup point and time for each tour, and they are what you show your hotel if you need help finding the meeting place outside Clarion Hotel The Edge.

What We Would Book

Our default: one chase on night two, one daytime tour you actually want, one flexible evening. The wider picture is in our Tromsø activities guide.

Booking is simple. Open the booking calendar behind any Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 link on this page, pick your date and group size, and on the checkout page type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 into the promo-code field to take 5% off. The code works on every Legendary Adventure tour booked online, you pay Legendary Adventure directly, and the cancellation rule is the operator’s: full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before, full charge inside 48 hours. We are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a small commission, which never changes your price.
