Christmas Week 2026 at a Glance
We have planned this for arriving on Monday 21 December 2026 by mid-afternoon and flying home on Sunday 27 December, with six nights in central Tromsø. In Norway, Christmas Eve (24 December) is the main celebration, and both 25 and 26 December are public holidays, so the plan puts the must-do tours on ordinary days and keeps the holidays light:

The order follows the same rules as every Tromsø plan we write: the aurora chase on the first night so that cloud never costs you the trip, no early pickup after a late night, and the longest daytime tour once you have slept. Christmas adds one more: anything booked on 24 or 25 December gets a fallback day.

One honest caveat: a season tells you the tour is offered in winter, not that it departs on every single day. The live booking calendar is the only reliable source for 24, 25 and 26 December, which is why those days carry flexible tours in this plan. Legendary Adventure’s private whale watching is listed for October–January, but it is booked by enquiry at NOK 120,000 per group, so our discount code does not apply.
Mon 21 and Tue 22 December — Solstice Chase, Then a Rest Day
Monday 21 December is the winter solstice, the very middle of the polar night: the sun does not rise in Tromsø at all, and the midday blue twilight lasts only two or three hours. For the aurora, that means a long dark window, starting well before the 18:30 pickup.

Tuesday is for recovering. Sleep in, then walk the Christmas-lit centre in the short twilight — this is the last ordinary shopping day before the holiday rush, so buy what you need for the next four days. In the evening, if Monday was cloudy and the forecast has improved, check the calendar and add a second chase. If you saw the lights, have dinner and go to bed early.
Wed 23 and Thu 24 December — Sommarøy, Then Christmas Eve on Snowshoes
Wednesday 23 December is the day before the holiday starts, and it is the one we would use for the big coastal tour. Thursday 24 December — Christmas Eve. If the calendar shows a departure, the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the perfect Christmas Eve morning: pickup 10:00, four hours including transfer, snowshoes and poles included, back in town by early afternoon in good time for dinner. NOK 1,500 per person, ages 10 and up. In Norway the evening of the 24th is the main family celebration and most shops close early that afternoon, so book your Christmas dinner table weeks ahead.

Friday 25 December — Christmas Day. The city is quiet and most of it is closed. Sleep, eat leftovers, walk. You walk on snowshoes to dark ground near Tromsø and wait for the sky. It depends on the local weather rather than driving to clear sky, so it is your second, different aurora evening — not a replacement for Monday’s chase.
Saturday 26 December is your catch-up day. Whatever did not run on the 24th or 25th goes here: the snowshoe hike in the morning, the aurora snowshoe hike in the evening. Sunday 27 December. The airport is roughly 10–15 minutes from the centre by taxi. With a morning flight, skip it.
What to Book When — and the Family and Group Versions
Shared departures take 2–8 guests, and Christmas week is when they fill. Our booking timeline:
