7 Days in Tromsø in Winter: A Relaxed One-Week Itinerary With Rest Days and Back-Up Aurora Nights
A full week is the most forgiving way to do Tromsø in winter: two planned aurora evenings plus spare nights for cloud, two big daytime tours, two genuine rest days and room for a short fjord morning. Here is the day-by-day plan we would give friends, built only on Legendary Adventure’s real pickup times and prices — with what to drop, what to swap, and 5% off every tour.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.

How a Week in Tromsø Works: Three Aurora Chances, Two Rest Days
This plan assumes you land on day 1 by mid-afternoon and fly home on day 8, with seven nights in central Tromsø between November and March. The week at a glance:
- Day 1: arrive; Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the evening.
- Day 2: rest day; evening held as back-up.
- Day 3: Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, lunch included.
- Day 4: Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the morning; free evening.
- Day 5: lazy day; Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the evening.
- Day 6: Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the morning; second Northern Lights Tour in the evening.
- Day 7: free day; evening held as back-up.
The logic is simple. Aurora depends on cloud, and cloud in coastal Tromsø can sit for two or three days, so the more separate evenings you spread your attempts across, the better your odds over the week. The first chase goes on night one. The second goes on night six, five days later, because the weather will almost certainly have changed by then. In between sits the Aurora Snowshoe Hike, a different kind of night out. And after every late night there is either a rest day or a short, late-morning tour — never a 10:00 pickup straight after a 02:00 return.
All the shared tours pick up outside Clarion Hotel The Edge on the harbour, except the advanced snowshoe option mentioned below, so a hotel or apartment in the centre is all you need. No car required.
Days 1 and 2 — First Chase, Then a Real Day Off
Arrive, check in and eat lightly — the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 includes a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks out in the field. Pickup is 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge from 25 October. For NOK 2,300 per person you get a local expert guide who picks the route that evening from the latest weather forecasts, a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle with 2–8 guests, and a winter suit over your own layers. The tour runs 5–8 hours depending on how far the guide drives for clear sky. Recommended ages are 7 and up.
Day 2 is a rest day in the honest sense. Sleep until you wake up. Walk to the Polar Museum or the Arctic Cathedral, take the Fjellheisen cable car if the sky is clear, find a café. We have a whole post on the morning after a northern lights chase if you want ideas that do not involve a pickup time.
Evening of day 2: leave it unbooked. If night one was clouded out and the forecast looks better, check the live calendar that morning and add a second chase. If you saw the lights, enjoy dinner and an early night — you have four more aurora chances to come.
Days 3 and 4 — The Coast, Then the Snow
Day 3 is the longest daytime tour, placed once you are rested. The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 and spends 5–6 hours driving west across Kvaløya to Sommarøy, with several scenic stops for fjords, snowy peaks and white-sand Arctic beaches, and a local lunch at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel by the sea (vegan and vegetarian options available). The operator mentions reindeer and moose near the road, white-tailed sea eagles and seasonal orcas and humpbacks as possible sightings. NOK 2,100 per person, groups of 2–8, ages 7 and up.

Day 4 is snow. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 and lasts four hours including transfer, with a local guide, a Mercedes minivan, and snowshoes and poles included. NOK 1,500 per person, ages 10 and up. It is a walking pace, not a fitness test, and you are back for a late lunch with the evening free.
For fit hikers aged 16 and up, swap it for the Arctic Snowshoe Adventure (Advanced)5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5: six hours including transfer, up to 8 people, NOK 2,100 per person. Note the different meeting point — Kaigata 6 in central Tromsø, not the Clarion pickup — and check the start time on the booking page. In a week-long trip this is the one tour where we would choose the harder option if your group can manage it: you have the rest days to recover.
Day 5 — A Lazy Day and the Aurora on Foot
After two daytime tours in a row, day 5 starts slowly. A sauna, a long lunch, an afternoon at Polaria or a wander along Storgata — whatever you have not got round to. Eat an early dinner, because the evening is your second aurora chance.

The Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge and lasts four hours. You walk out on snowshoes to dark ground away from the city lights with a local guide, then wait for the sky with snacks and a hot drink; snowshoe rental is included. It costs NOK 1,500 per person for 2–8 guests, recommended ages 10 and up, and you are back in town around 22:30 — no 02:00 finish.
Be clear about what it is. The snowshoe hike stays near Tromsø, so it depends on the local sky; the minibus chase drives to wherever the sky is clear. That is why the hike sits between two chases in this plan, not instead of them. On a clear night it is a wonderfully quiet way to see the lights — on foot, no road noise. On a cloudy one, it is still a beautiful night walk in the snow.
Travelling as a group of five or more? The Private Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 12,000 for up to 8 guests with pickup chosen at checkout, same ages and inclusions.

Day 6 morning: the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 for 3–4 hours, NOK 1,500 per person, ages 7 and up. It is the shorter fjord tour, closer to town, and complements the Sommarøy day rather than repeating it. You are back early afternoon with time for a nap.

If you would rather spend that morning on culture, the Spiritual Sámi Culture Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 from an address you choose, lasts four hours and is recommended for ages 7 and up. It is priced per group (NOK 17,500), so it works best for four or more people. As people from Finnish Lapland, we like that it is small and unhurried rather than a show.
Day 6 evening: your second Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. Booking it in advance matters: in busy weeks the 2–8-seat departures fill, and night six is five days after night one, so the weather pattern will usually have changed. Decide by day 4, more than 48 hours before departure — the cancellation window — whether you still want it. If you have already had a spectacular night, you can cancel for a full refund then.
Day 7 is the second rest day. Shop, revisit your favourite café, pack. The evening is the final back-up: add a chase only if your flight on day 8 is not early in the morning — see our note on booking a chase the night before an early flight.
What to Choose: Fewer Tours, Private Swaps and Big-Ticket Days
Six tours is a full week but not a frantic one. If you want fewer, cut in this order:
- Two tours: one Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 on night one and the Sommarøy fjord day — NOK 4,400 per person. Keep nights 2, 4 and 6 open for a rebooked chase.
- Three tours: add the Arctic Snowshoe Hike — NOK 5,900.
- Four tours: add the second chase on night six — NOK 8,200. For an aurora-focused trip, this beats any daytime add-on.
Groups of six to eight: private tours are priced per vehicle for up to 8 guests. The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 15,000) and the Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 15,000) come to NOK 2,500 each with six people and NOK 1,875 each with eight, are open to all ages, and pick you up from the address you choose at checkout.
A once-in-a-lifetime day: a week leaves room for one. The Private Reindeer Farm Visit with Reindeer Feeding & Sámi Culture5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 35,000 per group, 6–7 hours, all ages, Sámi lunch and coffee included, pickup 08:30) or the Private Dog Sledding – Husky Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 95,000 per group, 5–6 hours, ages 7 and up, pickup 08:45). Put either on day 4 instead of the snowshoe hike. Legendary Adventure also arranges private whale watching (October–January) and snowmobile days by enquiry; those are not booked online, so the discount code does not apply.
What a Week of Tours Costs per Person
Operator from-prices in Norwegian kroner, per person on the shared tours, with the price after the 5% reader discount alongside. Meals on the chase and lunch on the Sommarøy day are included.

| Without the second chase | NOK 8,900 | NOK 8,455 | ||

FAQ
Is a week in Tromsø too long in winter?
Not if you plan rest days. A week gives you several separate evenings for the northern lights, which is the biggest advantage in a coastal city where cloud can sit for days, plus time for both a full fjord day and a snowshoe hike without rushing.
How much does a 7-day Tromsø tour plan cost?
This plan’s six shared tours — two Northern Lights Tours, the Aurora Snowshoe Hike, the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour, the Arctic Snowshoe Hike and the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour — cost NOK 11,200 per person, or NOK 10,640 with code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5.
Should I book two northern lights tours in a week?
For a week, yes. Put the first on night one and the second about five days later, so the two chases fall in different weather. Decide more than 48 hours before the second one whether you still want it; shared tours refund in full outside 48 hours.
What is the difference between the Aurora Snowshoe Hike and the Northern Lights Tour?
The Northern Lights Tour (5–8 hours, NOK 2,300) drives to wherever the sky is clear and includes a warm meal and a winter suit. The Aurora Snowshoe Hike (4 hours, NOK 1,500) is a night walk on snowshoes near Tromsø with snacks and a hot drink, so it depends on the local sky.
Which tours in this itinerary can children do?
The Northern Lights Tour and both fjord tours are recommended for ages 7 and up, the snowshoe hikes for ages 10 and up, and the Advanced snowshoe adventure for 16 and up. The private northern lights and fjord tours are open to all ages.
Can I swap a day for dog sledding or reindeer?
Yes. Legendary Adventure’s Private Dog Sledding – Husky Experience (NOK 95,000 per group, ages 7+) and Private Reindeer Farm Visit (NOK 35,000 per group, all ages) both fit the day-4 slot instead of the snowshoe hike.
Our Honest Final Word
A week is a luxury most Tromsø visitors do not have, and if you do, the worst thing you can do with it is pack in a tour every morning and every night. The aurora rewards patience, not effort: two chases five days apart and an evening on snowshoes in between give you far better odds than three nights in a row. Fill the days with the coast and the snow, and leave two whole days for doing nothing in particular — that is when Tromsø starts to feel like a place rather than a schedule.
