Short answer

A spring wedding in Lapland works best in April, when snow is still on the ground and there are nearly twenty hours of daylight; May brings the thaw, birch leaves and +15 °C. The Ice Chapel and frozen lake end in March. Our Spring Wedding in Lapland page has the details, and as Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company we plan it with you via Weddings, with Arcticmint Villa and Kurula's Resort among the venues that work in spring.

What a Spring Wedding in Lapland Really Looks Like

Spring in Lapland is not one season but three small ones. Late March is still winter with sunshine, April is snow under long bright days, and May is the thaw: bare ground, birch buds, the first wildflowers and, by the end of the month, nights that barely get dark. The kit we work from puts the spring window at late March to the end of May, with temperatures from about −10 °C in late March to +15 °C in late May. April typically sits between −5 °C and +5 °C.

We are Joona & Alla, and Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, so we plan and style these days ourselves. Our honest view: April is the month most couples fall for, because it gives you snow and long light together. May is lovely, but it is a different wedding, softer and greener, and we will tell you which one you are really choosing.

April: Snow Plus Long Bright Days

By late April there are nearly twenty hours of daylight, which means portraits on a frozen lake at 22:00 are possible. Snow usually covers the ground well into April, and sometimes into early May at higher elevations. It is the one month where a bride can wear a lighter dress, a fur wrap and snow boots, and the photographer is not fighting darkness at 15:00.

The Rovaniemi spring look is also gentler: blush, sage and lavender palettes instead of silver and frosted pine. For flowers, spring gives pussy willows, Arctic buttercups, wood anemones and snowdrops locally, with imported ranunculus, tulips, peonies and garden roses. Compare that with winter, where fresh petals freeze almost instantly; our post on winter wedding flowers in Lapland explains why spring is so much kinder to a bouquet.

May: The Thaw, and Why It Needs a Plan

Snow melt is the thing nobody warns you about. In the weeks of the thaw, tracks and shorelines go soft, lake ice stops being something we can use, and ground that looked white a fortnight earlier is brown for a short while. Photographs on bare ground are less dramatic than snow or full summer, and we say so before you book.

What you get in return: birch leaves coming out, the first wildflowers, 15 °C afternoons, and a very quiet region. Guests find rooms easily, the roads are calm, and the restaurants have time for you. Late May also gives the first hint of the white nights, with the sun low on the horizon for much of the evening, so a ceremony at seven can still end in daylight. For couples who mostly want space, calm and good light without the winter logistics, May is a very good answer, provided you are happy with a landscape that is waking up rather than dressed for a postcard. Rain is possible, so there is always a covered alternative, such as a lodge terrace, a heated tent or a glass-fronted cabin. If you want true green and the midnight sun, early June to mid-July is the better window; see our summer guide for how that light feels.

What Is Possible, and What Is Not

Snowy forest ceremonyYes in April; patchy by May.

Midnight sunNot yet; best early June to mid-July.

Everything else, such as a cabin, a hilltop, a log lodge or a sauna with birch whisks, works well. Our Spring Wedding in Lapland page has more on styling.

A word on expectations. A winter wedding is built around the dark: candles, the glow of an ice chapel, a chance of aurora over the reception. A spring wedding is built around the light, so the styling is lighter too. We lean on natural materials, wooden arches, linen, soft greenery and plenty of candles for the evening, and we let the snow or the first buds do the rest. Couples who come in spring often tell us they chose it because they wanted to enjoy the day without hurrying between warm rooms. That, more than any single venue, is what spring offers.

Venues That Make Sense in April and May

Our spring favourites are the places that have a warm indoor space and a view. Arcticmint Villa sits on lake Norvajärvi, about 20 minutes from Rovaniemi and 15 minutes from the airport, and is open all year. Kurula's Resort at Pyhä is a lakeside fell resort, open all year, under two hours from the airport. Invisible Forest Lodge opens to families from mid-March. Aurora Hill Resort is Rovaniemi’s highest hill, about ten minutes from the centre.

One check: Silver Birch Resort hosts weddings January to April and June to December, so May is not available there, and winter bookings carry a two-night minimum stay. We tell you straight away when a date and a venue do not fit. Our guide to an Arcticmint Villa wedding shows what the lakeside set-up looks like.

Cost, Guests and How Far Ahead to Book

Spring is quieter than winter, which helps with availability and sometimes with budget. The general ranges from our kit apply: €5,000 for an intimate elopement up to €30,000 or more, with €10,000 to €20,000 typical for 20 to 50 guests. Plan 12 to 18 months ahead for December to March, and 9 to 12 months for summer; spring is more flexible, though the best April dates still go first. For the legal side, see our page on Getting Married in Finland: the examination of impediments through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency takes about seven working days and costs around €60, and a civil ceremony can be conducted in English. Start three to four months ahead. Many couples also complete the legal formalities at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Lapland, which we are glad to style in exactly the same way. Whichever route you take, send us your plans early: the sooner we know the month and the guest count, the more venues we can hold for you, and the easier it is to line up the photographer, the florist and the transport on the same weekend. For a small ceremony see Elopement in Lapland, and for the full range, Lapland Wedding Cost.

A Spring Wedding Day, Hour by Hour, and What Guests Pack

A typical April day, which we shape around your guest list and the sun:

  • Late morning: hair, make-up and getting ready in a cabin or lodge, with coffee and something warm to eat.
  • Early afternoon: a first look or private moment in the snow, while the light is high and bright.
  • Mid-afternoon: a short ceremony, 15 to 20 minutes outdoors with fur throws, heated seating and warm drinks, or a longer one inside if the weather turns.
  • Late afternoon: toasts, bread-sharing and a Finnish-style speech round, indoors.
  • Evening: dinner while the sun keeps going, then portraits in the long golden light.
  • Late evening: sauna or a fire for those who want it, since a sauna fits every Finnish wedding.

In winter the same programme is squeezed into a few hours of daylight. In spring you can breathe. A professional photographer is the best investment; Lapland photography packages generally run from about €2,000 to €6,000, depending on hours and travel.

Guests and packing

Guests who have never been to Lapland usually over-pack for the cold and under-pack for slush. Our advice for April: waterproof boots with grip, a warm coat, a hat and gloves, thin layers underneath and a pair of dry shoes for indoors. Women in dresses should bring thermals and a wrap; everyone should bring sunglasses. May guests need a light jacket and a rain layer, since the weather moves quickly. Direct flights serve Rovaniemi from Helsinki, London and many European cities, and the airport is about ten minutes from the town. Guests can stay a few extra days for husky safaris, reindeer sleigh rides or a sauna, which turns the wedding into a small holiday.

FAQ

When is the best month for a spring wedding in Lapland?

April for snow and long days together, with nearly twenty hours of daylight by late April. May is greener and warmer, up to around +15 °C, but with bare ground during the thaw.

Can we marry in the Ice Chapel in spring?

No. Ice Chapel ceremonies at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos run 15 December to 31 March. For late March we can still plan around the snow; for April, we suggest a lodge or lakeside venue.

How cold is a spring wedding?

April is typically −5 °C to +5 °C; late March about −10 °C; late May about +15 °C. Outdoor ceremonies stay short, with fur throws and warm drinks.

Can we still see the northern lights?

Possibly in early April; the season runs to April. We would not plan a wedding around it in May.

How much does a spring wedding cost?

The same ranges as our other seasons: roughly €5,000 for an intimate elopement to €30,000 or more, and €10,000 to €20,000 for 20 to 50 guests. See Lapland Wedding Cost.

How far ahead do we need to start?

Start the legal paperwork three to four months ahead and book venue and key suppliers at least six months ahead; April is the first month to fill.

Our Honest Final Word

Choose April if you want a snowy wedding and long light; choose May if you want green and quiet, and accept the thaw. Do not choose spring for the Ice Chapel. We are biased because this is our business, but we would rather give you the month that suits your story.
