Tromsø for the First Advent Weekend, 27–29 November 2026: A Three-Night Short Break Plan
The first Sunday of Advent falls on 29 November this year, which makes the weekend of 27–29 November a natural moment for a short Christmas-season break in the Arctic. It is about three and a half weeks away. Here is a three-night plan built around one northern lights night, one daytime tour and one deliberately empty evening.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
First Advent 2026 is Sunday 29 November, so the weekend runs Friday 27 to Sunday 29. For a three-night break, arrive Thursday 26 and leave Sunday 29. Our plan: a northern lights night first (the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, NOK 2,300 per person, 5–8 hours, 2–8 guests), a daytime trip on Saturday (the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 2,100 per person, or the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 1,500 per person, ages 10+), and one free evening. Two people doing the lights plus the fjord tour pay NOK 8,800 before the discount. To get our 5% reader discount, book online and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off. Families with children under 7 can look at the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 15,000 per group, all ages).

Why First Advent Works for a Short Break
We live in Rovaniemi, and every year the same thing happens in our part of the world. Around the end of November the light drains out of the sky, the first real snow settles, and people start wanting something to look forward to. The first Advent weekend is a tidy answer. It falls on Sunday 29 November in 2026, three and a half weeks away, early enough that you can still book the days you want.
This post is mostly for readers in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and the Nordic countries, for whom Tromsø is a short flight and one change away. We are not going to quote flight prices or timetables, which change daily; check your own airline for how you get to Tromsø and when the last connection leaves on Sunday. What matters for planning is the shape of the trip: three nights, two or three tours, and enough slack that you do not spend a long weekend in a queue.
One caution on events. We have not verified any Advent or market programme in Tromsø for this particular weekend, so we are not building the plan around one. Treat anything local as a bonus and check the city’s own listings nearer the time.
Thursday to Sunday: The Skeleton of the Plan
Three nights is short enough that every slot counts, so we would give each day one job.

| Day | Daytime | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday 26 Nov | Arrive, settle in, short town walk | Early dinner; or the northern lights tour if you land by lunchtime |
| Friday 27 Nov | Slow morning, town at your own pace | Northern Lights Tour (pickup 18:30), back late |
| Saturday 28 Nov | 10:00 pickup: fjord tour or snowshoe hike | Free evening, a proper dinner |
| Sunday 29 Nov | First Advent, a gentle morning, fly home | Home |
We put the lights on Friday, not Thursday, because it makes the plan forgiving. A delayed flight on Thursday costs you a dinner, not a tour. It also leaves Thursday as an arrival buffer. If you do arrive in good time and want the lights first, the same tour can run on the Thursday, but book it only once your flights are firm.
The pickup time on the Northern Lights Tour is 18:30 from 25 October, according to the operator’s listing, which applies to this weekend.
Night One: the Northern Lights Tour
The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the anchor of the break. The listing says: 5–8 hours, NOK 2,300 per person, recommended for ages 7+, 2–8 guests, pickup outside Clarion Hotel The Edge (look for a black Mercedes). Included are a local expert guide, transport in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. The guides choose a route from the latest forecasts, heading inland or along the coast, and tell stories about the Sámi traditions connected to the lights.

Because the length is 5–8 hours, you can end up back at your hotel in the small hours. That is why we would keep Saturday’s 10:00 pickup but not stack another early start on top of it, and why Friday morning should be empty.
What the tour cannot do is promise a sighting. Late November in Tromsø gives long nights, which is good, but cloud decides, and no operator or blog can promise clear skies. A three-night trip with one lights night is a sensible way to see them if the sky cooperates; if you want a second attempt, discuss that with the operator rather than assuming anything. If you travel with a child under 7, the private tour is the all-ages option.

Both daytime options leave at 10:00 from outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. In late November, this is the polar-night season, so the sun does not climb above the horizon, but the sky still lights up around midday, and a 10:00 start puts you out in it.

The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the relaxed pick: 5–6 hours, NOK 2,100 per person, ages 7+ recommended, premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, local guide, local lunch at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel, and scenic stops for fjords, beaches and wildlife spotting. It suits couples, grandparents and anyone who wants scenery without effort.
The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the active pick: 4 hours including transfer, NOK 1,500 per person, ages 10+ recommended, Mercedes minivan, local guide, snowshoes and poles. It suits families with older children and anyone who wants to move rather than sit. The listing does not include a meal, so pack a snack.
If you want a short outing, the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is 3–4 hours at NOK 1,500 per person.
The Free Evening, and the Empty Spaces
We built in a free evening on purpose. After two tours you want to eat somewhere warm, not be driven anywhere. Saturday night, the middle of First Advent weekend, is the one to keep open: you could walk through the centre, find a restaurant, and go to bed at a normal hour before Sunday’s flight.
We would book dinner in advance for the Saturday, because a busy weekend in a small city fills up. We are not naming restaurants, since we have not checked who is open or taking bookings that weekend. The same goes for any Advent lights or Christmas markets: look at the city’s official event pages in the week before you fly.
Sunday is the day for slack. If your flight is in the afternoon, a late breakfast and a walk will do. If it is in the morning, you will mostly be packing, so do not plan anything on Sunday. And do not forget to check baggage limits for winter clothing on your airline.
What It Costs: Two Itineraries, Two People
Prices below are the operator’s listed per-person prices in NOK, before the 5% reader discount, and exclude flights, hotels and meals.

| Plan | Per person | For two |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Lights Tour + Sommarøy & Kvaløya tour | NOK 4,400 | NOK 8,800 |
| Northern Lights Tour + Arctic Snowshoe Hike | NOK 3,800 | NOK 7,600 |
| Northern Lights Tour + Sommarøy + Snowshoe Hike | NOK 5,900 | NOK 11,800 |
If the 5% applies to the whole booking for two, the first plan comes to NOK 8,360, a saving of NOK 440. The third plan is probably more than one weekend can hold, because you are asking someone to get up for 10:00 pickups on two days.
For a family with a child under 7, the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is listed for all ages at NOK 15,000 per group of 2–8, a different price structure from the per-person tours above.
What We'd Book, and How
For two adults on a first Advent break we would book the lights on Friday and the Sommarøy fjord tour on Saturday, then spend the rest as we like. For adults who like walking, swap in the snowshoe hike. You can see the bigger picture in our list of all Tromsø activities.
Tours are booked directly with Legendary Adventure. To get our 5% reader discount, book online and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off, on Legendary Adventure’s own booking page. We are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a commission; it never changes your price. Cancellation is a full refund more than 48 hours before the tour and a 100% charge inside 48 hours, so book the tours once your flights are settled.
With the weekend only 3.5 weeks away, the group size is small (2–8 guests per tour), so we would not leave the bookings until the last week.

Our Honest Final Word
A three-night break around First Advent does not need a long list. One lights night, one daytime tour and one free evening is enough, and it leaves room for the weather to change your plans. We have not done these tours ourselves yet; the plan comes from the operator’s listings and from our own Arctic winters, and we would send friends to it.
