Snowshoeing in Tromsø With a Group of Friends: Shared Hike or the NOK 12,000 Private One?

Three to eight friends, one morning, two snowshoe options: NOK 1,500 each on the shared hike, or NOK 12,000 for the whole group on the private one. We did the sums for every group size, and the answer is less obvious than the headline prices suggest.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.

Short answer

For a group of friends the arithmetic is simple. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 1,500 per person. The Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 12,000 per group. Those two lines meet at exactly eight guests: eight times 1,500 is 12,000. With any smaller group the shared hike is cheaper in total, by NOK 1,500 at seven and NOK 7,500 at three. So the private hike never wins on price within the 2–8 guest limit, it only ties at eight. What it buys is a hike with only your friends. Both leave at 10:00, last 4 hours (transfer included), are recommended for ages 10+ and include a guide, Mercedes minivan transport, snowshoes and poles.

For either one, book online and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off.

The question every group of friends asks

Someone in the group chat has found a snowshoe hike. Someone else has found the private version and posted the price. NOK 12,000 looks like a lot for a morning in the snow, and NOK 1,500 looks like very little, and nobody wants to be the person who suggests the expensive one. We understand: from our winters in Rovaniemi we know that the group-chat debate is half the trip.

The good news is that this one can be settled with a table. The two tours are almost identical on paper: same 4-hour duration, same 10:00 start, same inclusions. The only real variables are group size, privacy and a couple of small logistics details, so we have laid those out in order, starting with the numbers.

The break-even table for 2 to 8 friends

Shared total is NOK 1,500 times the number of guests. Private per person is NOK 12,000 divided by the number of guests, rounded to the nearest krone.

GuestsShared totalPrivate totalPrivate per personPrivate costs extra
2NOK 3,000NOK 12,000NOK 6,000NOK 9,000
3NOK 4,500NOK 12,000NOK 4,000NOK 7,500
4NOK 6,000NOK 12,000NOK 3,000NOK 6,000
5NOK 7,500NOK 12,000NOK 2,400NOK 4,500
6NOK 9,000NOK 12,000NOK 2,000NOK 3,000
7NOK 10,500NOK 12,000NOK 1,714NOK 1,500
8NOK 12,000NOK 12,000NOK 1,500NOK 0

The pattern is clean. Each person you add to the private group cuts its per-person cost, but the shared tour is always NOK 1,500 each. They meet at eight, and the gap closes by exactly NOK 1,500 with every extra friend. If your group is seven, the private hike costs you the price of one extra person. If it is five, it costs the price of three extra people.

The same table with 5% off

The reader discount takes 5% off whichever you pick, so the order stays the same, but here are the numbers you would see after it. The private hike becomes NOK 11,400 per group, and the shared hike NOK 1,425 per person.

  • Three guests: shared NOK 4,275, private NOK 11,400 (NOK 3,800 each).
  • Five guests: shared NOK 7,125, private NOK 11,400 (NOK 2,280 each).
  • Seven guests: shared NOK 9,975, private NOK 11,400 (about NOK 1,629 each).
  • Eight guests: both NOK 11,400, which is NOK 1,425 each.

The discount applies when you book online on Legendary Adventure’s own booking page. As always, check the total on the checkout screen, because that is the figure you actually pay. The steps are in the how-to-book section further down.

What you are actually signing up for

Both hikes share the same core. Here is what the operator lists for the shared Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, and the private one is listed on the same terms:

Snowshoeing in the Tromsø region. Photo from Legendary Adventure's Arctic Snowshoe Hike.

  • Duration: 4 hours, and the operator notes that this includes transfer time.
  • Pickup: 10:00, outside Clarion Hotel The Edge (look for a black Mercedes) for the shared hike.
  • Ages: 10+ recommended.
  • Included: local expert guide, transport in a Mercedes minivan, snowshoes and poles.
  • Group size: 2–8 guests, larger groups on request.

The description talks about snow-capped mountains, fjords and a chance of Arctic wildlife such as reindeer, foxes and seabirds. It also says to dress in layers and wear good winter shoes that keep you warm and dry. Snowshoes are strapped over your own boots, so the boots matter: waterproof and warm, with space for thick socks.

One thing the listing does not say is how hard the route is, so we do not claim to know. The 10+ recommendation and the poles suggest an outing for anyone who can walk comfortably for a couple of hours in snow. If someone in your group has knee or fitness concerns, ask the operator before you book.

What the private hike changes, and what it does not

The Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is listed at NOK 12,000 per group (private), with a 10:00 pickup, 4 hours, ages 10+ recommended and the same inclusions: guide, Mercedes minivan, snowshoes and poles. The operator’s listing does not show a pickup location for it, whereas the shared hike meets outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. We would therefore ask or check the booking page for the pickup details before paying.

What privacy actually changes:

  • Nobody else on the trail. The shared hike runs with 2–8 guests and, if your group is small, strangers can make up the rest of the numbers.
  • Your own conversation. A group of friends who like talking, or who are celebrating something, is a different atmosphere to a mixed group.
  • Dependability of the group. If your party is six or seven, privacy also removes any worry about mixing with people who walk at a different speed.

What it does not change: the length, the start time, the age guidance or the equipment. If you are choosing for the hike itself rather than the company, the shared tour gives you the same day for less.

Which group should pick which

We would divide it like this.

Three to six friends, relaxed about strangers: the shared hike. You save NOK 3,000 to NOK 7,500 against the private price, which is a dinner, a second activity or a night of the northern lights.

Seven friends: either. The private hike costs NOK 1,500 more in total, about NOK 214 per person. If privacy matters, that is a small price.

Eight friends: private, no question. It costs the same as the shared hike and gives you the trail to yourselves.

A mixed group with a teenager under 10 or someone nervous in snow: think about ages first. The listing recommends 10+, so check for anyone younger, and ask the operator about suitability before booking.

One more consideration for groups of three or four: the shared hike can fill up with other guests, up to eight in total. If you want to guarantee that only your friends come, the private hike is the only way, and in that case the cost per person is NOK 4,000 for three and NOK 3,000 for four.

If the 10:00 hike is not quite right

Two other snowshoe tours are worth knowing about, because friends often have different energy levels.

  • The Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5: NOK 1,500 per person, 4 hours, pickup 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, ages 10+ recommended. It includes a guide, minivan transport, snowshoe rental, snacks and a hot drink, and the idea is a night walk with a chance of seeing the northern lights. No operator can promise the aurora.
  • The Arctic Snowshoe Adventure (Advanced)5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5: NOK 2,100 per person, about 6 hours including transfer, ages 16+, up to 8 people, meeting point Kaigata 6, 9008 Tromsø. The listing gives few further details, so contact the operator about the route and what is included before you book.

If your group splits between a strong walker and a casual one, the standard hike is the safe middle. The advanced version is aimed at a smaller subset of the group, and its minimum age of 16 rules out younger teenagers.

What we would book

We have not walked these routes ourselves, so this is a recommendation from the numbers and the operator’s listing, not a review. For most groups of friends we would book the shared hike and spend what we saved on something else. For eight we would book the private hike. For seven we would go private if the group matters to us.

FAQ

How many people does a private snowshoe hike cost less for?

Within the 2–8 guest limit, none. NOK 12,000 for the group equals NOK 1,500 each at eight guests, which is the same as the shared hike. Below eight, the shared hike is cheaper in total.

How old do you have to be?

Ages 10+ are recommended for both the Arctic Snowshoe Hike and the Private Snowshoe Hike. The Arctic Snowshoe Adventure (Advanced) is listed for ages 16+.

What time does the hike start, and how long is it?

Pickup is at 10:00 and the tour lasts 4 hours, including transfer time. The shared hike meets outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, where you look for a black Mercedes.

What is included?

A local expert guide, transport in a Mercedes minivan, and snowshoes and poles. There is no meal listed, so bring water and a snack if you wish.

Can strangers join the shared hike?

The shared hike takes 2–8 guests, so a small group may be joined by other guests. Book the private hike if you want only your friends.

Is there a reader discount, and what is the cancellation rule?

Yes: book online and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off. For the shared tours, you get a full refund more than 48 hours before and a 100% charge inside 48 hours.

Our Honest Final Word

The most useful thing in this comparison is the break-even point: it sits exactly at eight guests, and not before. For seven friends or fewer, the shared snowshoe hike is the cheaper way to see the same snow, and the NOK 12,000 private price is a purchase of privacy rather than of savings. For eight, it is simply the better deal. Decide what the group cares about, check your numbers in the table, and book accordingly.
