E-Bike or Mountain Bike on a Stellenbosch Wine Tour? R1,395 vs R1,150 Compared

The Bikes ‘n Wines half-day tours in Stellenbosch come in a mountain-bike version and an e-bike version, and the price gap is R245 per person. We compare the two side by side, add the full-day luxury e-bike tour, and tell you who should pay for the motor and who should not.

The two tours at a glance

Bikes ‘n Wines runs several Winelands tours out of Stellenbosch, and the two half-day versions are the easiest to compare because almost everything except the bicycle is identical. Both cover roughly 15 km, both visit two wine estates, both include a fully guided ride, helmet rental, bottled water, a light snack and the tastings at each stop, and both are open to riders aged 16 and over. The estates on the route are chosen from Skilpadvlei, Neethlingshof and Vredenheim, according to the operator’s tour page.

The differences are the bike, the effort rating, the price and a couple of small practical details. This is the comparison as it stands on the live tour pages in October 2026; operators change prices and times, so always confirm on the booking page before you pay.

What the extra R245 actually buys

The e-bike is an electric pedal-assist bicycle. That means you still pedal, and the motor adds help while you do, so hills and headwinds feel smaller. The operator describes the tour as a way to cruise along scenic trails and visit boutique wine farms without breaking a sweat, and it rates the effort 2/5 against 3/5 for the mountain-bike version. That one-point difference is the whole product.

R245 per person is about 21 per cent on top of the R1,150 mountain-bike price. For a couple that is R490, and for four adults R980. Put that way, the question is not whether e-bikes are nice (they are) but whether your group will really use the assistance.

One thing the extra money does not buy is a longer day. The distance is the same 15 km, the tastings are the same two estates, and the finish time is only about fifteen minutes earlier on the e-bike, according to the operator’s listed times. You are paying for ease, not for more content.

Who should book the mountain-bike tour

If at least one person in your group cycles regularly at home, the R1,150 mountain-bike tour is the better value. Fifteen kilometres at tasting pace, with stops at two estates, is not a hard ride, and the operator’s 3/5 rating tells you to expect some gentle effort rather than a workout. You also get a real cycling day: the satisfaction of having earned the glass at the next estate.

The mountain-bike tour also has no height restriction listed, which matters for shorter riders. The e-bikes need a minimum of 155 cm, so if anyone in your party is under that, the mountain-bike version (or the family tour, below) is the practical choice.

Finally, if you are travelling on a budget, the R245 saved per person pays for a good part of lunch afterwards. Lunch is for your own account on both half-day tours, and Stellenbosch has plenty of places to eat, so the saving does not go to waste.

  • You ride a bike at least a few times a month.
  • Your group is similar in fitness and happy with a gentle workout.
  • Anyone is shorter than 155 cm.
  • You would rather spend the difference on lunch or a private upgrade.

Who should pay for the e-bike

The e-bike earns its premium in three situations. The first is mixed fitness. When one partner cycles to work and the other has not ridden since school, a mountain-bike tour can turn into one person waiting at every corner. Pedal assist evens that out without anyone having to say a word about it.

The second is heat. Stellenbosch is at its busiest and hottest from November to March, which is Cape Town’s summer peak, and the 13h30 departure finishes in the warmest part of the afternoon. Riding in the sun is easier when the bike is doing some of the work. The 10h00 departure is cooler either way, and we would choose it in January regardless of the bike.

The third is age and joints. The tour is 16 and over with no upper age limit listed, and an e-bike removes most of the fear of hills for older riders or for anyone returning from a knee problem. If your group includes grandparents who would like to ride, the e-bike is usually the more comfortable choice, as long as everyone clears the 155 cm minimum.

A last point for first-timers: the operator’s own copy says the e-bike tour is designed for both seasoned cyclists and casual riders and suits friends, families or solo adventurers. You do not need to be an expert to enjoy it.

What is the same on both tours

Both tours are fully guided, so you follow a guide along farm paths and quiet roads rather than navigating yourself. Helmets are provided and compulsory. Wine tastings at both estates are included in the price, and the tastings are quality-focused rather than big pours. Guides do not drink on tour, and non-drinkers are welcome: non-alcoholic tastings can be arranged on request, so check with the operator when you book.

A minimum of two guests is needed for a departure. If you are travelling alone, you can join an existing booking or book two seats, and private versions are available for a supplement. Both tours run in light rain; heavy wind or storms can change things, and the operator’s cancellation terms apply (more than 72 hours before the tour you get a 90% refund, inside 72 hours 50%, inside 48 hours no refund, and a full refund if the operator cancels for weather). Read the operator’s Terms and Conditions for the precise wording.

The tours are closed on 25 and 26 December, 1 and 2 January and over the Easter weekend. The rest of the year, including the whole Christmas holiday run-up, departures operate, but December and January dates sell out early, so book as soon as your travel dates are fixed.

The third option: the full-day luxury e-bike tour

If you are considering the e-bike at all, it is worth looking at the next step up. The Stellenbosch Luxury Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link costs R2,295 per person, runs from 10h00 to 16h00, covers 15 to 20 km, and visits four estates rather than two. It includes private vineyard access, gourmet pairings at the estates and a cheese and charcuterie platter for lunch, so the meal you would otherwise pay for on the half-day tour is part of the price.

That changes the maths. A half-day e-bike tour at R1,395 plus a lunch in town comes to a figure that is not far from R2,295 for two more estates and the platter. If you were going to spend the whole day in the Winelands anyway, the luxury tour deserves a serious look. If you only want a morning on the bike, stay with the half-day tours. The luxury tour is rated 3/5 by the operator and has the same 155 cm minimum height as the other e-bike tours; online transfers are bookable subject to availability.

If kids are coming: the family tour

Both half-day tours above are 16 and over. If younger children are travelling with you, the right Bikes ‘n Wines product is the Stellenbosch Family Tour5% off via our link: R1,150 per person, 15 km, all ages, with child seats, baby buggies or children’s mountain bikes included depending on the child’s size, plus non-alcoholic tastings for the kids. It is a mountain-bike tour, so parents do the pedalling; for the Franschhoek valley, the gentler Franschhoek Family Tour5% off via our link is the alternative. We cover both in more detail in our family guides.

A practical idea for mixed groups: grandparents or teenagers on the e-bike tour and the rest of the family on the family tour, booked as two separate tours starting from the same Winelands base on the same morning. Check the start points when you book, because the e-bike half-day tour lists Stellenbosch rather than Skilpadvlei as its start.

How to book with the Hungrytravelfamily discount

Bookings are made directly with Bikes ‘n Wines on their own site; we never take payment. Use any of the tour links on this page, pick your date and number of guests, and the 5% reader discount is applied automatically in the booking flow. There is nothing to type at checkout. The price you see on the tour page is the normal price, and the discount comes off during booking.

We are a Cape Adventure Brands affiliate and earn a commission on bookings made through our links — the 5% discount is yours either way. We have not ridden these tours ourselves; we research them from the operator’s live pages and send readers to them, so treat our comparison as decision help and confirm the details on the booking page.

The e-bike half-day tour is listed as self-drive only, so plan your transport to Stellenbosch in advance. If you would like to avoid driving, the full-day luxury tour lists transfers as bookable online subject to availability.

FAQ

How much more is the e-bike version than the mountain-bike version?

The Stellenbosch Half Day Winelands EBike Tour is from R1,395 per person and the Stellenbosch Half Day Winelands Cycle Tour is from R1,150 per person, a difference of R245. Book through our links and 5% comes off automatically.

Do I need to be fit for the mountain-bike tour?

The operator rates it 3/5 and the distance is 15 km, with stops at two estates. If you cycle occasionally you should be comfortable. If you have not been on a bike for years, the e-bike version (rated 2/5) is the easier option.

Is there a height limit?

Yes for the e-bikes: riders must be at least 155 cm (5 ft 2). No height restriction is listed for the mountain-bike tour. Check with the operator if anyone is close to the limit.

Can children join these half-day tours?

No, both are 16 and over. For children of any age, look at the Stellenbosch Family Tour, which supplies child seats, buggies or children’s bikes.

What time do the tours start?

Both half-day tours list a 10h00 or 13h30 start. In summer we would pick 10h00 for the cooler air. Confirm available times on the booking page for your date.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Light rain does not stop the tours. If the operator cancels for weather you get a full refund; otherwise the standard schedule applies (90% refund more than 72 hours before, 50% inside 72 hours, none inside 48 hours). Check the operator’s Terms and Conditions.

Our Honest Final Word

For most couples and mixed groups visiting in the Cape Town summer, we would book the e-bike. The R245 per person is real money, but the heat, the wind and the difference in fitness between travel partners are also real, and the e-bike takes most of those problems off the table. Experienced cyclists and anyone watching the budget should take the mountain-bike tour and spend the saving on lunch. We have not done either tour ourselves; this is a comparison built from the operator’s live pages.
