The Situation: You Are Here and the Clock Is Ticking
You have landed, checked in and dropped your bags, and you have three evenings in Tromsø. The question in your head is which of those nights to spend on a northern lights tour. It is the most common planning dilemma we see among travellers who arrive without a booking, and it is very easy to overthink.
Our short answer: choose early, not perfectly. The aurora cannot be scheduled, the weather changes by the hour, and tour spaces are limited to small groups of up to eight guests. Waiting for a certain forecast often means waiting until the tour you wanted is full.
The Hard Facts That Shape the Choice
Three facts from the operator’s listing drive this decision. First, the shared tour is small: 2–8 guests per vehicle, so a popular night can sell out. Second, it is a long evening of 5–8 hours with an evening pickup, so you want to be rested and fed. Third, it is a chase: the guide routes by the latest weather forecasts, heading inland or along the coast, and does not simply stand in one place.
Add the cancellation rule. Free cancellation applies more than 48 hours before departure, but inside 48 hours the full amount is charged. That means when you are already in town, tomorrow’s and tonight’s tours are effectively final once booked. The night after next is the first one you can still change freely. Plan with that in mind.
Night One: Book It, Don't Wait
If you arrive in the morning and feel fresh, the first evening is often the right choice. It gives you two more nights as a backup if clouds win the first round. If you arrive late, jet-lagged or after a long journey, consider the second evening for the chase and use night one to eat, sleep and settle in. The aim is not to see the lights on the first night, it is to give yourself more than one attempt.

The people who are happiest at the end of a trip are usually those who attempted the chase early. A cloudy first night is not a failure if you still have two evenings left.
Night Two: The Flexible Backup
The second evening is your safety net. You can book it provisionally if you are unsure, because you can still cancel free until 48 hours before departure. If the first night is clear and spectacular, you can decide whether a second chase is worth it. Many travellers book a second night anyway, because aurora is different every time, and the chase is as much about the Arctic night as the lights.
If you are travelling with children aged 7 or older, the second night is also kinder to bedtimes: a rested family is happier on a 5–8 hour tour.
Night Three: The Last Chance Plan
Treat the third evening as a bonus attempt rather than your only plan. If you leave early the next day, check the pickup time, remember the late return, and think about your flight. If your flight is in the morning, consider a different tour such as the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500, 18:30 pickup, 4 hours) which ends earlier than a full chase. It is a gentler way to use the last evening.

If you have already seen the lights well, spend the final evening on dinner and an early night, and use the daytime for a fjord drive.

Your days are free for other activities, but do not overbook. A 4-hour morning hike followed by a long chase can be tiring. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500, 10:00 pickup, 4 hours including transfer) works well on the day after a chase because it is gentle. The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,100, 5–6 hours, local lunch) is better on a day when you have a free evening. Our activities hub on our Tromsø activities hub lists other ideas for resting days.
Reading the Forecast Without Overthinking It
Everyone in Tromsø checks cloud maps and aurora apps, and there is nothing wrong with that, but be careful what you conclude. Aurora activity forecasts tell you whether the sun is stirring things up; cloud forecasts tell you whether you can see anything. A strong aurora forecast with thick cloud over the whole region gives you nothing, while a modest forecast and a clear pocket can give you a lovely night. Forecasts also change within 24 hours.
The practical lesson is that you should not cancel or postpone a night purely because an app shows cloud over the city. The chase exists to leave the city. Your guide has the local knowledge and the freedom to go where the sky is open, which is why we say choose early rather than waiting for a perfect map.
The Hours Before Pickup
Because the pickup is at 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, the afternoon matters. Have a proper lunch and a light early dinner or substantial snack; the operator includes a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks on the tour, so you do not need to arrange dinner afterwards. Take a short rest, charge your phone and camera, and pack a small bag with a hat, gloves, a neck gaiter and any medication you may need. The winter suit is provided, but your own warm base layers and socks make the night far more comfortable.
Arrive a few minutes early and look for the black Mercedes. If you are staying somewhere far from the centre, allow for travel time, or choose the private tour where you select the pickup location at checkout.
If Tonight Is Cloudy: Plan B Without Wasting the Evening
If you have not booked and tonight looks grey, do not write off the whole evening. You can still go out and look, but treat it as a bonus. Better, use the cloudy night for something that does not depend on the sky: a long dinner, a visit to a museum or a swim, and then book the chase for tomorrow when you have rested. If you are on a chase and the first stop is cloudy, trust the guide and keep moving; the route is designed for exactly that.
One more tip from our own Arctic winters: bring patience. The lights often show up late, appear and fade, and reward those who stay out in the cold rather than check every five minutes. A hot drink and a good coat are your best allies.
A Sample Three-Night Plan
| Evening | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Night 1 | Northern Lights Tour | Earliest attempt, two nights in reserve |
| Night 2 | Rest or second chase | Decide after night 1 |
| Night 3 | Aurora Snowshoe Hike or dinner | Lighter option before departure |
Adjust based on the weather and how you feel. The point is to have a plan that survives a cloudy night.

FAQ
Can I book a northern lights tour for tonight?
Possibly, if space is available. Check the live calendar on Legendary Adventure’s booking page. Remember that cancelling inside 48 hours is charged in full.
Which night should I choose if I have three?
Choose the earliest night that still gives you a backup. The first or second evening is usually best.
How long is the tour?
5–8 hours, with pickup outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. Private tours let you select the pickup location at checkout.
What is included?
A local expert guide, a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a winter suit, and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks.
How much does it cost?
NOK 2,300 per person for the shared tour or NOK 15,000 per group for the private tour; HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 gives 5% off online.
What if the weather is bad on my tour night?
The guide chooses a route to look for clearer sky. No tour can guarantee the lights, so a backup night helps.
Our Honest Final Word
When you are already in town, the best plan is a simple one: book early, keep a backup night and rest properly before the long evening. You cannot control the sky, but you can control how many attempts you give yourself.
