The Polar Night Is Not Darkness

Tromsø is far enough north that the sun does not rise above the horizon for weeks in midwinter. People imagine total darkness. In reality the sky between roughly mid-morning and mid-afternoon is a deep twilight: blue, then pink and orange along the horizon, with the mountains standing out in silhouette. We know the polar night from our own winters in Rovaniemi, and the coast near Tromsø gives it a different character from inland Lapland.

That is why the tour is a daytime trip. Pickup is at 10:00, so you are on Kvaløya as the sky starts to brighten, and the stops come in the best light of the day.

The Route in Winter

The tour leaves Tromsø and crosses to Kvaløya island, then follows coastal roads past fjords, snow-covered mountains and Arctic beaches to Sommarøy. The operator describes wildlife spotting, white-sand beaches and a local lunch. In December the beaches are cold, windswept and often dusted with snow, which makes them stranger and more beautiful than the summer postcards.

The guide chooses stops to match the light and the weather. That can mean longer at a viewpoint where the sky is pink, and shorter at one where the wind is strong. Photography in this light is forgiving: soft, directional, and quiet.

What to Wear and Bring

The tour does not list a winter suit (that is included on the northern lights tours), so dress as for a day outdoors in the Arctic: thermal base layer, warm mid layer, windproof outer layer, warm boots, hat, gloves and a neck gaiter. Coastal wind can make a modest temperature feel much colder, and you will be stepping in and out of the vehicle all day.

Bring a phone or camera with a charged battery; cold drains batteries fast, so keep a spare in an inside pocket. If you wear glasses, expect them to fog when you walk from the vehicle into the lunch stop.

Lunch and the Pace of the Day

The tour includes a local lunch at the end of the route, with the Sommarøy coastline outside. The operator lists a local expert guide, transport in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle and the lunch. It is a relaxed day, not a hike. Stops are short, and there is time to sit, eat and warm up before the drive back.

Duration is 5–6 hours, so you return to Tromsø in the afternoon. That fits neatly with an evening activity such as the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, which picks up at 18:30. We suggest a rest and an early dinner in between.

Families and Groups: The Private Version

The Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 per group for 2–8 guests, all ages, with your choice of pickup at checkout. For a family with young children the private vehicle means flexible stops and no strangers on a cold day.

Photographing the Blue Hour on the Island

The low light changes how you shoot. With the sun below the horizon, there are no harsh shadows, so snow and water pick up the colour of the sky. Shoot the horizon when it turns pink and orange, then turn around and photograph the mountains in cool blue. A phone in night or low-light mode will do surprisingly well, but hold it still against a railing, a car or your own chest, because shutter speeds drop in this light.

If you have a camera with manual settings, a small tripod is worth packing, though the guide will not wait while you set up a long exposure. Think of the stops as short photo windows and keep your gear ready in an inside pocket so batteries stay warm. Gloves with touchscreen fingertips, or thin liner gloves under mittens, make the difference between a sharp frame and cold hands.

Combining the Fjord Day With a Northern Lights Night

The classic December pairing is the fjord tour by day and the northern lights chase by night. The fjord tour pickup is 10:00 and the day lasts 5–6 hours, so you are back in Tromsø in the afternoon. The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 18:30, which leaves time for a shower, a rest and an early dinner. Do not skip the rest: the chase is a long evening, listed at 5–8 hours.

If you can, book the fjord day first and the chase second. A calm daytime outing gives you a chance to see how your layers work in real conditions before a night when you will be standing still in the cold. And if the weather moves the fjord day, you have a buffer before the chase.

On a trip of four nights, we would book the chase for night two, the fjord tour for day three, and keep night three as the spare. On a shorter trip, the fjord tour on the morning after arrival works well because it keeps you outdoors during the few bright hours.

Who Should Choose the Shorter Ersfjord Tour Instead

Not everyone wants a 5–6 hour day. The Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a 3–4 hour half-day at NOK 1,500 per person, ages 7+, with pickup at 10:00. It suits travellers with a tight schedule, people who get restless in vehicles, or those who want to leave the afternoon free. The trade-off is that you do not reach Sommarøy and its beaches or the included lunch. For first-time visitors who want the headline sights, we would still choose the longer tour.
