If you live in the Nordics, Tromsø is a short flight away, and a long weekend is enough. We live in Rovaniemi, in Finnish Lapland, and we still send friends to Tromsø for the coast. Here is how to plan a three-night weekend around the tours that matter, and how to book with 5% off.

Why Nordic Neighbours Choose Tromsø

People in Finland, Sweden and Denmark tend to assume the northern lights are something you travel far for. In fact, Tromsø is among the easiest high-latitude cities to reach from the Nordic capitals, with regular flights and a short transfer from the airport to the centre.

The appeal is not only the sky. Tromsø is on the coast, with fjords and mountains close to town, and it offers a different winter from the inland Lapland that we know from Rovaniemi. We say that with some bias: we love Finnish Lapland, but we also tell friends that Tromsø has an advantage in coastal scenery and an operator with small-group chase tours.

For a Nordic traveller, that makes it a good second winter destination. You already know the cold. What you are paying for is the setting and the guided access.

The Three-Night Weekend, Hour by Hour

Here is the plan we would follow, assuming you land on Thursday or Friday afternoon:

  1. Night 1 (arrival). Check in, eat, short walk, sleep. No tours. Flights get delayed, and you do not want to lose a paid evening.
  2. Day 2. Daytime fjord tour. The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 has a 10:00 pickup and runs 5–6 hours, including a local lunch.
  3. Night 2. Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, pickup outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 18:30 from 25 October.
  4. Day 3. Sleep in. Free afternoon in town.
  5. Night 3. A second chase if you have the budget, or a quiet dinner.
  6. Departure day. Nothing before your transfer to the airport.

If you have only two nights, drop the free day and keep the chase on night 2.

Fitting the Tours to Your Flight Times

The most common problem in a short break is timing. The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is 5–8 hours, so the return can be after midnight. Any flight the next morning before about 10:00 makes that night risky.

Daytime tours are easier. The Sommarøy tour starts at 10:00 and ends in the afternoon, so it fits a day when you land late the night before or leave in the evening. The shorter Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is 3–4 hours at NOK 1,500, also a 10:00 pickup, which can fit on your departure day if your flight is in the evening.

Always allow extra time. Weather delays are the Arctic’s way of reminding you that flight schedules are not a promise, and a tour booked inside 48 hours of the start cannot be refunded under the operator’s terms.

Money: What a Weekend Costs in Tours

The tour costs for two people on a typical weekend add up like this, using the operator’s current prices:

TourPer personFor two
Northern Lights Tour (5–8 h)NOK 2,300NOK 4,600
Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour (5–6 h)NOK 2,100NOK 4,200
Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour (3–4 h)NOK 1,500NOK 3,000

So the chase plus the fjord tour is NOK 4,400 per person before the discount. Entering HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout takes 5% off, which on a pair of tours for two people is a meaningful saving. Norway is expensive, and we say so plainly, but the tours include meals, transport and winter suits, which keeps the hidden costs low.

Convert prices to your own currency yourself on the day you book. We do not quote exchange rates, since they move.

Where to Stay So Pickups Are Easy

Standard tours leave from outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, so staying within walking distance of that spot saves effort on cold evenings. The city centre is compact, and many hotels are within a short walk. We do not quote hotel prices because they change, but we would choose a central location over a bargain further out, because the extra walk in the dark and cold is not free.

If you travel as a group of friends and book the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, you can choose your own pickup location during checkout, so the hotel choice matters less. That tour is NOK 15,000 for the group, suitable for all ages, with the same winter suit, meal and hot drinks as the shared version.

A Nordic Traveller's Packing Notes

You know cold, but Tromsø cold is wetter and windier than inland Lapland. A few notes from our own experience:

  • Coastal wind makes minus five feel colder than minus fifteen inland, so bring a proper windproof shell.
  • Waterproof boots matter more than extra-warm boots.
  • The northern lights tour supplies a winter suit, so you do not need to carry heavy gear for the chase.
  • Keep your phone and a power bank inside your jacket to protect them from the cold.

How to Book With the Discount

Open the tour pages from this article, choose your dates and enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field on Legendary Adventure’s online booking page. The code gives 5% off bookings made there. Cancel more than 48 hours ahead for a full refund, according to the operator; inside 48 hours the booking is charged in full.

Our Tromsø activities hub puts all the tours side by side if you want to compare. We are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a commission, which never changes your price.
