Why Spring Is a Special Time for This Tour

In December the Sommarøy tour is a study in blue light: low sun, long shadows and pastel skies. By March the sun is high enough to give the landscape real colour, and by April the light is bright and clear for much of the day. The tour covers the same route, but it feels like a different place.

The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour is listed by Legendary Adventure as a year-round experience, so you are not locked into one season. That flexibility is a big reason it is the most booked daytime trip in Tromsø. If you want to compare it with a polar-night visit, our polar night guide to the same tour covers the contrast.

What the Day Looks Like

Pickup is at 10:00 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, where you look for a black Mercedes. The group is small, 2–8 guests, and the operator lists a local expert guide, transport in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle and a local lunch. The total time is 5–6 hours.

The route goes out to Kvaløya, the large island west of Tromsø, and continues to Sommarøy, a small island community connected by a bridge. Along the way there are fjord views, mountains and stops for photographs. The guide chooses the stops based on conditions, so the exact order can vary from day to day.

We recommend bringing a camera with a spare battery, but you do not need to be a photographer. The stops are short enough that you will not be standing around in the cold, and the vehicle gives you a warm place to return to.

March Versus April: What Changes

March still feels like deep winter. Expect snow cover, cold air and a sky that can switch from clear to cloudy quickly. The days are noticeably longer than in January, so the tour gets plenty of daylight.

April is brighter, and conditions on the coast can be a mix of sun, wind and snow showers. It is a good month for travellers who want winter scenery without the heaviest cold. We will not promise a specific temperature or snow depth, because Arctic weather varies, but the pattern is a gentle shift toward spring.

If you are planning around Easter, book early. Spring holidays are a popular time for this tour, and morning departures can fill up.

Is It Worth NOK 2,100?

It depends on what you compare it to. Renting a car and driving the same route costs time, and winter driving in Norway is not for everyone. With the tour, someone else drives, you get a local guide, and lunch is included. We worked through the numbers in our tour versus rental car guide, and also in the value breakdown. For most visitors the tour is the easier and less stressful choice.

On a booking made directly on Legendary Adventure’s own page, our 5% reader discount applies. That is not true on third-party platforms, which is why we always link to the operator’s booking calendar.
