Proposal Roses in a Lapland Winter: Why We Use 30 Roses, How They Survive −20 °C and the Bigger Options
Flowers are the first thing most people picture when they imagine a proposal, and the first thing the Arctic cold ruins. Here is what we do about it as the people who style proposals through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings.

Almost every signature proposal we plan includes a bouquet of 30 roses, and the number is deliberate: it is enough to look abundant in photographs and manageable to carry and hold for a short moment in the cold. Fresh petals freeze and wilt quickly in Lapland winter, so our styling uses high-quality artificial and preserved flowers where it matters and keeps the real bouquet for the short moment you are holding it. If you want more, A Thousand Petals (from €700) puts a bouquet of 70 roses on the bed, and The Grand Romance (from €2,700) builds a heart of flowers with glowing MARRY ME letters and a flower-lined aisle. Why Flowers and Lapland Winters Do Not Get Along
A bouquet is the classic proposal prop, and in Lapland winter it is also the prop most likely to fail. Temperatures can fall to −20 °C and below, and fresh petals do not survive it for long: they freeze, darken and drop. A florist in a warm country can set up a rose arch hours in advance. Here, the same arch would be a brown disappointment before you arrived.
That shapes how we work. Our studio in Rovaniemi uses high-quality artificial and preserved flowers for styling that has to stay outside, because they stay perfect in every season and survive the cold. For the moment you actually hold flowers, we use a bouquet of 30 roses, brought out of the warm at the last possible minute, with a plan for what happens to it afterwards. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and the flowers are the part of this work we are most particular about.
Why Thirty Roses
Thirty roses is the standard in our signature proposals, and there are practical reasons for it. It looks full and generous in photographs without being impossible to hold with gloves. It is heavy enough to feel like a gesture and light enough to carry across snow. And it is a number that fits a proposal budget without competing with the setting itself.

The bouquet is part of the price of nearly every option: Yes Under the Aurora, On the Frozen Lake, The Fireside Proposal, A Promise in the Ice Chapel, Dinner in the Glass Dome and The Path to Yes all include it. Right Where You Are includes it too, with a bigger bouquet as an add-on.
How a Bouquet Survives the Moment
The cold is not a reason to give up on flowers. It is a reason to manage their time outside. We keep the bouquet warm until shortly before you arrive. We wrap it so the stems stay protected. We place it where you can pick it up in a few seconds and where the photographer can capture the exchange. After the proposal the bouquet goes back to a warm place; in a heated vehicle or room it lasts for the rest of the evening.
For anything that has to stand outside for longer, such as the arch, the aisle or the letters, we use artificial and preserved flowers that hold up at −30 °C. Your guests, or you, will not know the difference in a photograph, and the arrangement can become a keepsake. For the weather plan around the whole moment, see our guide to proposing at −20 °C: ring, flowers and the cold.
When Thirty Is Not Enough: Our Bigger Options
| Option | From | Flowers | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Thousand Petals | €700 | Rose petals, a bouquet of 70 roses on the bed and 15 heart-shaped balloons | A room or cabin surprise, no audience |
| The Grand Romance | €2,700 | A grand heart of flowers, MARRY ME letters, a flower-lined aisle and an abundant bouquet | A spectacular reveal |
| Right Where You Are | €650 | Décor at your accommodation and a bouquet of 30 roses; bigger bouquet as an add-on | Your own cabin or hotel |
Most other signature proposals offer a bigger bouquet or a grand design as an add-on. The Grand Romance is designed and built on site by our team, can be placed on a lakeshore, in a forest clearing, on a snowy hilltop or at your own accommodation in any season, and includes professional photography and private transport within 30 km of Rovaniemi.

Colours, Styling and What Photographs Well on Snow
Snow is a white backdrop, and that changes the colour logic. Deep reds read strongly against it, which is why red roses are a classic. White and blush look elegant but can disappear against the snow unless there is greenery, candlelight or a coat to contrast with. In winter our styling palettes lean on whites, deep greens, pine and frosted details. If you are not sure, tell us what your partner wears and loves, and we will match the flowers to the setting, the coat and the time of day.

In summer, the palette opens up: lush greenery, soft pinks and wildflower tones suit the midnight-sun light. Autumn brings amber and dried-grass tones that echo the colours of the fell.

Choosing How Much to Spend on Flowers
Flowers are the easiest place to overspend and the easiest place to under-think. Our advice is to start with the setting, because a candle-lit lake, an Ice Chapel or a glass dome already carries the scene, and a standard bouquet of 30 roses completes it. If the setting is simple, such as your own cabin or a walk in nature, extra flowers do more work: a bigger bouquet or a styled arrangement turns a plain place into a deliberate one. If you want the flowers to be the whole spectacle, The Grand Romance is the option, from €2,700, and it includes professional photography and private transport within 30 km of Rovaniemi.
For a quiet evening with no audience at all, A Thousand Petals from €700 spends the budget indoors on petals, seventy roses and balloons, and keeps everything out of the cold. A photographer can be added to either of the lower-priced options if you want the reaction captured.
Questions We Hear About Flowers Before a Proposal
The questions repeat. Will the roses be fresh? The bouquet is real and prepared to be fresh at the moment it is handed over; the structures that stay outside use artificial and preserved flowers. Can you match my partner’s favourite flower? Often yes, tell us early and we will say honestly what works in the cold. Can you do something other than roses? Yes, we are a styling and design studio, and custom proposals are designed from scratch around your story and budget. What about allergies or scents? Tell us in advance and we adapt. And what happens to the flowers afterwards? They go home with you, or we pack them down with the set-up.
None of these are awkward. The more we know about your partner’s taste, the more precisely we can choose, and we would always rather ask one question too many than have you stand in the snow with the wrong flowers.
Keeping the Flowers a Secret and Getting Them Home
Flowers are hard to hide. If you are travelling to Rovaniemi, you do not have to bring or hide anything: we source and prepare everything, deliver it to the setting and remove it after. That means no suspicious boxes in your luggage and no vase in your hotel room. If you want to take the bouquet home, ask us in advance how best to transport it, and whether a preserved or artificial arrangement can become a keepsake.
Our post on keeping a Lapland proposal secret from your partner covers the rest.
A Realistic Timeline for the Flowers on the Evening
The flowers have their own schedule on the day of the proposal, and it is worth understanding. Roughly two hours before the moment, our team collects the bouquet and keeps it in a warm place. An hour before, the setting is styled, with any lanterns, candles, arch or letters placed outside. Shortly before you arrive, the bouquet comes out and is handed to the right person, which may be you or the guide, depending on the option. The moment itself is short. Immediately after, the bouquet is wrapped and moved back into the warm, and the photographs continue in short stretches. At the end of the evening the flowers either go with you or are packed up with the rest of the set-up. Nothing is left behind and nothing needs to be carried by you. If a cold snap makes the outdoor window shorter, we shorten the time the bouquet spends outside and agree a back-up in advance.

FAQ
How many roses do your proposals include?
Most include a bouquet of 30 roses. A Thousand Petals includes 70 roses on the bed, and The Grand Romance has an abundant bouquet plus a heart of flowers.
Do real roses survive the cold in Lapland?
Not for long outdoors. We keep the bouquet warm until shortly before the moment and use artificial and preserved flowers for anything that must stand outside.
Can we have a bigger bouquet?
Yes, as an add-on to most proposals.
Can we keep the flowers?
The bouquet can go home with you; ask us about transport. Preserved and artificial arrangements can become keepsakes.
Which flowers are best for a winter proposal?
Red roses read strongly against snow, while white and blush need contrast. We advise on colour once we know the setting and your partner’s coat.
Our Honest Final Word
The right question is not how many roses but how to make them last for the one minute that matters. Thirty roses, brought out of the warm at the right time and photographed well, is enough for almost every proposal. Choose more only if the setting calls for it. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, so we are not neutral, but flowers in the Arctic are our daily problem and we would tell you the same over coffee.
