Short answer

If you have two nights in Tromsø, book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for the first evening you feel rested, keep the second evening free, and decide on a second chase after you see how the first one goes. Booking two shared chases up front costs NOK 4,600 per couple per night, so a cheaper second attempt can be the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 1,500 per person. The logic: one night is one roll of the dice

The northern lights depend on two things: solar activity and clear sky. You cannot control either, and neither can the tour operator. A chase improves your odds by moving you to wherever the sky is open, but it cannot create the aurora. On one night, you might see nothing; on another, you might see a lot. A second night is a second attempt, and it is the most reliable way to improve your overall chances.

That is why we usually suggest at least three nights in Tromsø for first-timers. With two nights, you have less margin, and the decision about how to use them matters more. This post is written for people who are already there or arriving today, which is why we keep it practical.

Option 1: one chase on night one, keep night two open

If you arrive in the afternoon and feel fine, book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for night one. It leaves outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 18:30 from 25 October and lasts 5–8 hours, so you will not have much time to settle in, but the guide drives to wherever the sky is clearest.

If you see the lights, you have a night to enjoy anything else. If you do not, you can book another attempt on night two. Availability matters here, because the tour has limited small-group seats, and last-minute bookings depend on what is left.

This option is the most flexible and the one we prefer for couples who are not sure how they will feel after travel. The downside is that you may not get a seat on night two if you wait.

Option 2: book night two first and keep night one as a buffer

The reverse approach is to book night two and use night one as a gentle arrival evening. This is better when you are travelling a long way, when flights are delayed in winter, or when you have small children. You arrive, eat, sleep, and go out fresh.

The risk is that you leave yourself no second chance. If night two is cloudy everywhere, which is rare but possible, you fly home without having seen the lights. To reduce that risk, you can still add a chase on night one if you arrive early and feel fine.

For families, we prefer this option and a shorter evening activity on night one, such as the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, which is NOK 1,500 per person and lasts four hours.

Option 3: book both nights

Booking both nights is the safest way to maximise the chance of seeing the aurora. It also doubles the cost: NOK 4,600 per night for a couple, NOK 9,200 for two nights. For a group, the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 15,000 per night is NOK 30,000 for two nights, which is a lot, but may be worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Two things to check first. One is the cancellation rule: for shared tours, free cancellation applies more than 48 hours before departure, so if you book both nights from home you can adjust if the forecast changes. The other is stamina. Two consecutive late nights out in the cold are tiring, especially if the first night returns after midnight.

If you can, put a rest day between them. That is not always possible in a two-night trip, so be honest about how you cope with late nights.

What if night one is cloudy?

First, do not panic. A cloudy night in the city does not mean a cloudy night everywhere. The guide chooses the route based on cloud forecasts, and the group may drive inland or across the border to Finland or Sweden. That is the core of the chase format.

Second, check availability for the next night as early as possible. If the shared tour is full, look at the private option, which has its own vehicle and may still have space. The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 per group of 2–8 and has a flexible pickup location.

Third, have a plan B that is not weather-dependent. A fjord day with the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 2,100 per person is a strong daytime option, and an evening in town with a good dinner is not a bad outcome either.

A realistic two-night schedule, hour by hour

It helps to see the times written down, because the chase can run late. Here is a version we would use for a couple arriving in the afternoon on day one.

Photo from Legendary Adventure’s Aurora Snowshoe Hike.
Photo from Legendary Adventure’s Aurora Snowshoe Hike. Photo: Legendary Adventure
  • Day 1, 15:00–17:00: arrive, check in, buy a hot drink and look at the sky. Check live availability for that evening.
  • Day 1, 18:30: pickup outside Clarion Hotel The Edge for the shared chase if you booked it. Return time depends on the route and can be anywhere from late evening to the small hours.
  • Day 2, late morning: a slow start. If you have a daytime tour, choose one that begins at 10:00 or later in your head and be honest about sleep.
  • Day 2, 18:30: a second chase, a four-hour aurora snowshoe, or a quiet dinner depending on what you saw.

The point of writing it down is to notice the trap: a 02:00 return followed by a 10:00 pickup is possible, but it makes the second day a bad day. If you want to do both a chase and a daytime tour, put a night between them.

If your flight home is on day three, check the departure time before booking anything late on day two, because the chase does not have a fixed return time.

How to think about the odds without fake statistics

We will not quote a percentage chance, because nobody can give you an honest one for a specific night. What we can say is how the logic works. Each night has some chance of both clear sky and activity. On a chase, the guide improves the clear-sky part by moving. A second night is a second independent attempt at the same two conditions, so two nights are better than one, and three are better than two. The marginal gain gets smaller each time, but the first extra night is usually the most valuable.

That is why a budget-conscious traveller may prefer two cheaper attempts, such as one shared chase and one aurora snowshoe, rather than one expensive private tour. And it is why a big group may prefer the private tour: the vehicle can wait, stay longer or go farther without having to compromise with strangers.

If you are in Tromsø today: a practical checklist

  • Check availability now: the operator’s booking page shows live seats. Do not wait until the afternoon.
  • Know the pickup: the shared tour leaves from outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, where a black Mercedes waits. The private tour lets you choose your pickup location at checkout.
  • Eat early: the tour includes a warm meal and snacks, but a light lunch helps.
  • Dress in layers: a winter suit is included, but you need warm clothes underneath.
  • Charge everything: phone, camera and a spare battery in an inside pocket.
  • Do not plan a hard deadline: the return time depends on how far the guide has to go.

If you booked something else for the next morning, check the start time. A 10:00 snowshoe or fjord tour after a 02:00 return is possible but tiring.
