Why Take a Guide Up Table Mountain at All?

Table Mountain is the postcard of Cape Town, and walking up it is one of the best things a visitor can do. It is also a real mountain. The weather can change quickly, some routes involve steep steps or light scrambling, and the descent can be tougher on knees than the climb. The operator, Hiking Tours Cape Town, points out that its guides are trained in mountain guiding, water and a snack are provided, and most Table Mountain hikes take between three and six hours.

We do not recommend hiking alone or near dusk on any of these routes. A guide takes care of the navigation, the pace and the decision about whether conditions are right that day, and most of these tours include a one-way cable car ticket, which saves you a long descent. That is the logic behind the prices of R1,495 to R1,645 per person: you are paying for the guide, the planning and the cable car, not only for the walk. From Rovaniemi, we think that is very fair for a mountain day of this scale.

The Four Routes at a Glance

All four are for ages 12 and over and all four run in light rain, according to the operator. Lunch and tips are not included. Optional vehicle transfers are available on request.

Platteklip Gorge: The Direct Route

Platteklip is the most direct route to the summit and, as the operator puts it, steep but well maintained. The Table Mountain Hike – Platteklip5% off via our link covers 5 km with 890 m of ascent in about 3.5 hours, starting at the Lower Cable Way at 09:00 and finishing around 12:30. A one-way cable car ticket is included, so you earn the view and then take the ride down.

Choose this one if you want the classic experience, you are reasonably fit and you do not have much time. It is a hard climb because it is steady and relentless rather than technical. The cable car descent depends on the weather and the Cableway’s schedule, which is a practical point to raise with the operator if your timing is tight.

Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine: The Green Route

The Table Mountain Hike – Skeleton Gorge/Nursery Ravine5% off via our link starts at Kirstenbosch Gardens main entrance and climbs the eastern slopes through forest, past streams, waterfalls and big trees before reaching the plateau and the dams. It is 8 km with 650 m of ascent, takes 5.5 hours (09:00 to 14:30) and costs R1,595, including the Kirstenbosch entrance and a snack. We would pick it for hot days because so much of the climb is in shade, and for anyone who finds Platteklip too exposed.

Because it is long and steadily uphill, the operator rates it 4 out of 5. If you want a gentler look at Kirstenbosch only, the shorter Kirstenbosch Botanical Hike5% off via our link (R1,495, 3.5 hours, 16+) stays in the gardens and on the lower trails.

India Venster: For Those Who Like a Scramble

Table Mountain Hike – India Venster5% off via our link starts at the base of the cableway and ascends alongside cliffs, with light scrambling and views over the city and the ocean. It is 6 km with 720 m of ascent, takes 3.5 hours and costs R1,645. The operator calls it a local favourite and rates it 4 out of 5.

This is the route where a guide matters most. We would not suggest it for anyone who dislikes heights or exposure, and in wet or windy conditions the guide will decide how it runs. Children aged 12 and over are welcome, but this is not the first hike we would give a nervous 12-year-old.

Kasteelpoort: The Quiet Fynbos Route

Table Mountain Hike – Kasteelpoort5% off via our link begins at the upper Kloof Nek carpark and winds across fynbos-covered slopes with Atlantic views and the “Diving Board” lookout. It covers 8 km with 680 m of ascent over 5.5 hours (09:00 to 14:30) for R1,645, and cable car tickets are included. It is a moderate-to-challenging day and tends to suit people who would rather have space and scenery than the most direct line to the top.

Choosing by Group: A Quick Decision Guide

Rather than ranking the routes, we find it easier to match them to the people. Here is how we would think about it for common groups:

  • Two adults, average fitness, one free morning: Platteklip. It is the shortest door-to-summit option, the cable car ticket removes the descent, and you are back by about 12:30 with the afternoon free.
  • Family with teenagers (12+): Platteklip is the realistic starting point. The climb is steep, so make sure your 12-year-old is used to walking uphill for a few hours. If anyone is under 12, none of these four is an option, and the Stellenbosch Family Tour5% off via our link by bike takes all ages and may suit better.
  • Hot-weather visitors who dislike full sun: Skeleton Gorge, because the climb is largely through forest and by streams from Kirstenbosch.
  • Confident, sure-footed hikers: India Venster, for the scramble, or Kasteelpoort for a longer day with the Diving Board lookout.
  • People with a full day free and a love of quiet trails: Kasteelpoort or Skeleton Gorge, both 5.5 hours.

Note that the start points differ. Platteklip and India Venster both begin at the Lower Cable Way, Skeleton Gorge at Kirstenbosch and Kasteelpoort at the upper Kloof Nek carpark. If you are staying in the City Bowl, all are a short ride-hailing trip, and the operator offers optional vehicle transfers on request.

When to Go: Summer, Winter and the Mountain's Moods

The operator lists peak season as November to April, which matches the long, dry Cape summer. Mornings are the sensible time: the tours start at 09:00 for a reason, and the heat builds later. The south-easter, which locals call the Cape Doctor, can blow hard in summer, and on windy days the Cableway may not operate, which is why the cable car descent depends on conditions.

In winter, between June and August, the Cape gets rain fronts, the mountain can be cloudy and cold, and fewer visitors are about. The operator says tours run in light rain and that unsafe weather leads to adjustments, postponement or cancellation with alternatives offered. If you are travelling in winter, we would keep a spare day in your schedule and bring a proper waterproof and warm layer.

Table Mountain does not care that your flight leaves on Sunday. Build a buffer day into any short trip, particularly if the hike is the one thing you really want to do.

What About Lion's Head?

If Table Mountain feels like too much for the time you have, Lion’s Head is the shorter alternative at 5 km and 380 m of ascent. The Lion’s Head Daybreak Hike5% off via our link costs R1,495 for about three hours and starts at 07:00 in summer and 08:00 in winter, with a snack hamper at the summit. It is also 12+. For a short trip, one sensible plan is a single Table Mountain route plus one Lion’s Head morning on another day, so your legs get a rest in between.

What to Pack and How to Book With Our Discount

Pack grippy shoes, a hat, sunscreen and a warm waterproof layer, because the weather on top can change quickly even on a clear morning. Water and a snack are provided. November to April is peak season, so book your preferred day well ahead.

FAQ

Which Table Mountain hike is best for first-timers?

Most first-timers will find the Platteklip route the most straightforward: 5 km, 890 m of ascent, about 3.5 hours, R1,495 per person with a one-way cable car ticket. Book through our link and 5% comes off automatically.

Which route is the shadiest?

The Skeleton Gorge / Nursery Ravine route climbs through forest and alongside streams from Kirstenbosch, so it has more shade than the other three. It is 5.5 hours and costs R1,595.

What is the minimum age?

All four routes are for ages 12 and over according to the operator.

Is the cable car included?

The Platteklip, India Venster and Kasteelpoort tours list cable car tickets as included. The Skeleton Gorge listing does not. The cable car descent depends on the weather and the Cableway’s schedule.

Do the hikes run in the rain?

The operator says its tours run in light rain. If the weather is unsafe, the tour may be adjusted, postponed or cancelled and alternatives offered. Check the operator’s Terms and Conditions.

How fit do I need to be?
