A New Year’s Eve Proposal in Lapland: Ice Chapel, Aurora or Frozen Lake, and How to Time the Question
Asking on the last night of the year, in the snow, with a toast ready at midnight, is one of the most requested things we plan. This is how a New Year’s Eve proposal in Rovaniemi really works: which settings suit the date, why we rarely schedule the question for midnight itself, and how to keep it secret on the busiest week of the Lapland winter.

A New Year’s Eve proposal in Rovaniemi works best when you ask in the early evening of 31 December and keep midnight for the toast. The settings that suit the date are A Promise in the Ice Chapel (from €1,800, open to us from mid-December), On the Frozen Lake (from €1,400, December to March) and Yes Under the Aurora (from €1,500, if the sky is clear). Through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings, we plan, set up and photograph all three, and every price includes the bouquet of 30 roses and the sparkling wine. Christmas to New Year is the busiest week of the year in Lapland, so write to us as early as you can; see all ten Proposals in Lapland for the full range.

Why New Year's Eve Works So Well in Lapland
Most couples who write to us about 31 December have the same picture in mind: snow, candlelight, the end of one year and the start of the next, and a question asked at exactly the right moment. Lapland delivers every part of that picture. December is a prime month for the northern lights, the snow is reliable, and Rovaniemi is quiet and dark in the best possible way, with a long blue twilight instead of a full day.
Full disclosure: Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company. Alla, who founded it after planning her own wedding in 2024, and our team are the people carrying the candles out to the ice while you are still at dinner. So this is not a neutral review of the market; it is what we would tell a friend who asked us how to do it properly.
The honest caveat is demand. The days between Christmas and New Year are the most atmospheric of the year and also the busiest, with flights and cabins full, so the date you want may already be gone for some settings. The earlier you tell us, the more likely your first choice is still free.
Which Setting Suits 31 December
Not every proposal suits the date equally, and the weather at the very end of December decides some of it. These are the ones we would put forward, in the order people usually choose them:

- A Promise in the Ice Chapel. The most symbolic for the date. The Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos is carved from snow and crystal-clear ice each winter and opens to us from mid-December, so it is a real option at New Year. You have it alone, the SnowHotel entrance is included, and the toast usually takes place afterwards in the Ice Bar, so the evening carries on after the yes.
- On the Frozen Lake. A private lake outside Rovaniemi, candles and lanterns on the ice, a fire on the shore with warm drinks. Late December is a good time for it because the ice is thick and the light is soft; we style it for the hour you choose.
- Yes Under the Aurora. A private northern lights hunt for two, guided by a professional photographer who prepares flowers and candles while you watch the sky. It depends on the sky, so we plan for that honestly; our guide on how the aurora proposal actually works explains the odds.
- Dinner in the Glass Dome. A private three-course dinner in a glass dome at Invisible Forest Lodge, with the décor outside among the trees or inside on your table. It is the warmest option if the temperature is very low.
- The Fireside Proposal. The private laavu fire outside Rovaniemi, with a reindeer to feed in winter. It is the easiest to fit into a trip that is already full.
The Comparison Table
All prices are from-prices and include planning, coordination, set-up and removal; each includes a photographer.
| Proposal | From | Season | Best for | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A Promise in the Ice Chapel | €1,800 | Mid-Dec–Mar | A symbolic, candle-lit moment, then a toast | Add-on |
| On the Frozen Lake | €1,400 | Dec–Mar | Open sky, lanterns, a possible aurora | Add-on |
| Yes Under the Aurora | €1,500 | Late Aug–Apr | Couples who want the lights above them | All included |
| Dinner in the Glass Dome | €1,450 | Year-round | A warm, private dinner first | Within 10 km of the centre |
| The Fireside Proposal | €1,400 | Year-round | A relaxed fire and a reindeer | Add-on |
If you have already booked a cabin or hotel you love, Right Where You Are (from €650) brings the setting to your door, and the photographer can be added.
Why We Rarely Schedule the Question for Midnight
It is tempting to plan the question for the stroke of midnight. We usually talk couples out of it, for three practical reasons. First, a clear, calm midnight is not something anyone can promise, and a proposal that depends on one minute of the night leaves no room for the weather. Second, midnight on 31 December is when everyone around you is also celebrating; people across Finland set off fireworks, and the quiet you are paying for may not be there. Third, your partner will be cold, tired and probably suspicious by then.
What we suggest instead is the early evening: ask while it is calm and the light is still good, then raise a glass, have dinner, and spend midnight as an engaged couple. The toast at midnight is yours to keep, and the photographs are already taken. If you really want the question at midnight, tell us in the first message and we will plan a sheltered, quiet setting and a fallback for the hours before.

Keeping It Secret on the Busiest Week of the Year
The week between Christmas and New Year is full of excursions, dinners and plans, which is actually good cover. A few things that have worked well for the couples we plan for:

- Give the evening a harmless label. “A sunset sleigh moment”, “a special dinner”, or “a photoshoot for the trip” all work, and the last one explains why a photographer is there.
- Keep the ring on you. Never in a suitcase that can be moved. Pack a spare warm pocket for it, because a ring case at −15 °C is not pleasant to open with gloves on.
- Tell only us. We communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and never contact your partner. Our full guide to keeping a Lapland proposal secret goes through every step of the trip.
- Dress your partner for it. Suggest warm layers for the evening without saying why; thermal base layers, a proper winter jacket and boots make or break a proposal outdoors.
Fitting It Into a New Year Trip
Most couples arrive in Rovaniemi on 28 to 30 December, with the airport only about ten minutes from town. A simple shape for a four-night stay: the first day to settle in and see Santa Claus Village, which is on the Arctic Circle about 8 km north of town; a normal activity on the second; the proposal on the evening of 31 December; and a slow morning on 1 January. If the sky is clear on the 30th and you booked Yes Under the Aurora, we can swap the days.

The fewer logistics on the proposal evening, the better. Staying in town or close by makes the transfer short, and where transport is not included (the lake, the Ice Chapel, the fire) we price a private transfer by distance. For a longer view of the season, see our guide to a Christmas and New Year proposal in Rovaniemi.
What to Wear on a December Evening
December temperatures in Rovaniemi are typically between −5 and −15 °C, and they can go lower. Plan to be outdoors for 30 to 45 minutes for most of our options. For your partner: thermal layers, a warm jacket, a hat, gloves and winter boots; the dress or the suit goes underneath, or comes later. For the ring: an inside pocket, and ideally a small pouch rather than a box. For the photographs: avoid thin fabrics, and bring one accent colour in a scarf or hat that will show against the snow. Our guide to proposing at −20 °C has the full practical list.
How to Plan It With Us
- Tell us the story. Weeks before is best: how you met, what matters to them, how you want it to feel. Write through the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page.
- Option and quote. Within a few days you receive a clear quote with nothing hidden, and we hold the date.
- Quiet preparation. In the days before, flowers, candles, photographer, transport, sparkling wine and the weather plan are all confirmed.
- The moment. We set up while you are on your way and step out of sight. You walk your partner in, the yes happens, we capture it, and then we quietly pack down.
We reply within one business day, and last-minute requests are welcome if the date is free.
FAQ
Is a New Year's Eve proposal in Rovaniemi possible this year?
Often yes, if you write soon. The week between Christmas and New Year is the busiest of the winter, so dates and settings fill up; the earlier you tell us, the more likely your first choice is free. Last-minute requests are welcome if the date is available.
Is the Ice Chapel open on 31 December?
Our A Promise in the Ice Chapel proposal is bookable from mid-December until the end of March, so New Year falls inside the season. We agree the exact hour with the SnowHotel when we hold your date.
What does it cost?
From €1,400 for the frozen lake or the fireside, €1,450 for the glass dome dinner, €1,500 for the aurora hunt and €1,800 for the Ice Chapel. Each price includes planning, set-up, removal, 30 roses, sparkling wine and a photographer; transport is included only where the option says so.
What if the sky is cloudy?
The northern lights are never promised, so we plan for that. The lake, the chapel and the fire work with or without the aurora, and for the aurora hunt we choose the clearest sky on the night and build a sheltered backup into the plan.
Can the proposal happen at midnight?
It can, but we usually suggest the early evening and a midnight toast instead, because the weather, the crowds and the cold are all kinder earlier. Tell us what you prefer and we will plan a quiet setting.
Will my partner find out?
Not from us. We communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and never contact your partner or the venue unless you ask. Everything is set up before you arrive and removed after you leave.
Our Honest Final Word
A New Year’s Eve proposal in Lapland is not difficult, but it is date-sensitive. Choose the setting that fits your couple, ask early in the evening rather than at midnight, and give us as much notice as you can. We are biased, because this is our own business, but we are also the people standing in the snow at −20 °C making sure the candles stay lit, and we would rather you book a month early than hope for a free evening in the last week.
When you are ready, start with A Promise in the Ice Chapel, On the Frozen Lake or Yes Under the Aurora, or tell us the story on the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page and we will suggest the right one.
