Easter is the weekend that most visitors forget about when they plan Lapland. Everyone thinks of Christmas, of December, of the dark. But the end of March is the other perfect season: the light comes back, the snow is deep and bright, and the evenings still have enough darkness to give the northern lights a chance. For people who are not fans of the polar night, it may be the best week of the year.

It also comes with a four-day weekend in Finland, a time change on Easter Sunday, and holiday rules for tours. This guide is about getting those right so you can enjoy the part that matters, which is a long afternoon on a frozen lake with a hot cup of something in your hands.

Short answer

The product we would build an Easter weekend around is the Wilderness Snowmobile Safari5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199, about 5 hours, 2 to 2.5 hours of driving, with food and drinks by an open fire). Add a calm half-day such as the Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €159) and, if the sky is on your side, the small group Northern Lights Hunting Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199). Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are public holidays, so group tours can need 4 people instead of 2.

Why Easter is a different Lapland

Winter in Rovaniemi does not have one mood, it has three. December is candlelit and dark, January and February are the deep cold, and March is the bright, generous end of the season. By late March the days are long enough that you can finish a whole snowmobile safari in daylight and still have time for dinner, and the snow cover is often at its most reliable.

Easter 2027 falls on Sunday 28 March, with Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March. In Finland that makes a four-day weekend. Many Finns head north to their cabins, so the roads and the trails get busy, but it is a very different kind of busy from the December Santa crowd. It is families and friends who want to ski, drive snowmobiles and sit outside in the sun.

We always tell people that this is the season to trust the weather less and the live calendar more. Snow depth and temperature at the end of March change from year to year, and we cannot promise a particular condition. What we can say is that the winter products stay on sale as long as conditions allow, so the calendar on this page is the source of truth for what is bookable.

If you are comparing months, our guide to March in Rovaniemi explains the season in more detail.

The four-day weekend and the holiday rule

The one rule that catches people out is the one the product pages state plainly. On the StayLapland pages we read for this guide, group tours such as the snowmobile safari, the reindeer adventure and the snowshoeing tour need at least 2 people on weekdays and Saturdays, and at least 4 people on Sundays and public holidays. The guaranteed northern lights hunt raises its minimum to 4 people normally and 6 on public holidays.

For Easter 2027 that matters on three days: Good Friday (26 March), Easter Sunday (28 March) and Easter Monday (29 March). Saturday 27 March is a normal Saturday, and with a minimum of 2 it is often the easiest day for a couple to book a group tour. If you are a pair and your heart is set on a specific day, check the notes in the booking window before you pay, because the system states the minimum for your date.

There is also a small detail we like: in the European Union the clocks go forward on the last Sunday of March, which in 2027 is Easter Sunday itself. You lose an hour overnight, so if you are planning an early start on the Sunday, set an extra alarm and do not book the first departure of the day.

The big day out: Wilderness Snowmobile Safari

The Wilderness Snowmobile Safari5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the product we would anchor the weekend around. According to the StayLapland page it lasts about 5 hours, with about 2 to 2.5 hours of actual driving, equipment, instructions, winter clothing in adult and child sizes, and a meal and drinks by an open fire. Pick-up and drop-off are included within 10 km of the city centre. It starts from €199, and booking closes 4 hours before the start.

The practical details matter more here than on any other tour. To drive, you must be 18 or older and hold a driver's licence. Passengers on twin drive and children in sleighs do not need one. The page states a maximum self-liability of €900, which you can reduce to €250 with a €25 waiver bought online or on the spot. If you book a twin drive, you book one ticket per person: four people means four tickets and two snowmobiles. Children 140 cm or taller can sit on a snowmobile paying the adult price, and shorter children ride in a sled pulled by the guide's snowmobile. It is not recommended for children under 3.

Who should book it? Anyone who wants a proper winter day and likes the idea of driving. Who should skip it? Anyone who dislikes engines, long days or cold hands; the reindeer adventure is the calmer cousin. The tour can be cancelled or rescheduled in extreme weather, with a limit of -35°C, and -25°C for small children.

If you want to compare options, our guide to mixed-age winter activities shows what works when not everyone wants to drive.

Aurora in late March

Aurora season does not end on the first of March, and Easter is a good example. In late March the evenings still become properly dark, the temperatures are often kinder, and the sky is frequently clearer than in the middle of winter. What changes is that you have to stay up a little later, because darkness comes later than in December.

We would look at the small group Professional Northern Lights Hunting Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199). A small group of 2 to 8 people goes with a guide and a photographer, the route follows the weather, and professional photos are delivered online. There is a 100% refund if no northern lights photos are captured. Start times usually fall between 17:00 and 21:00 and are confirmed by email, and the tour can run for many hours. Please bring your passport, as the page asks.

The holiday minimum applies: the tour is cancelled or rescheduled if fewer than 4 people are booked, or fewer than 6 on public holidays. That makes Saturday 27 March the cleanest night for a couple, and the other nights depend on how many others book.

Whatever you choose, treat the northern lights as a bonus rather than a plan. Even the guaranteed hunts are about the refund, not about the sky, and in March you may well come home with a snow-and-sunshine memory instead.

Reindeer and snowshoes: the calm days

A four-day weekend should not be four days of engines. The Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €159, about 3 hours) is the easy day. It includes a 2 to 3 km reindeer safari in the forest, stories about reindeer herding, winter clothing in all sizes, and cookies and juice. If the weather does not allow a sleigh ride it becomes a reindeer walk instead. The recommended minimum age is 3, and the same holiday minimums apply.

The Snowshoeing Tour in the Private Kuoksa Wilderness5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €89, about 3.5 hours) is the quiet one. It includes snowshoes and poles, a guide, a traditional teepee, snacks and drinks, and pick-up within 10 km of the city centre. It is not recommended for children under 7. We like it for the end of March because the light is good, the pace is slow, and you finish with something warm in your hands.

If your group includes someone who does not want to drive or race, either of these is the day that makes the weekend feel balanced.

A sample Easter weekend

Good Friday, 26 March. Arrive, settle in, and take a short walk. Book nothing heavy; holiday minimums apply and you will be tired from the journey.

Saturday, 27 March. The day for the group tour with the lowest minimum. For a couple, this is the best day for the snowmobile safari, and the best night for the northern lights hunt.

Easter Sunday, 28 March. Remember the clock change. A late, slow morning, a reindeer or snowshoe half-day in the afternoon, and Finnish Easter food at a table. Mämmi, the traditional malted rye dessert, is worth a spoonful at least once.

Easter Monday, 29 March. Travel day for most visitors. If your flight is late, a short activity in the morning is possible, but we would keep a buffer.

For a longer stay, the full list of activities in Rovaniemi shows everything else you can add.

Upgrading and combining

If you want to turn the weekend into something more special, the combination products stack two or three experiences into one day. They carry higher prices and different notes, so read the page for your date. For a family or a group of friends, the savings from our 5% reader discount, applied with HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout, add up quickly across several tours.

Booking two separate products, such as a snowmobile safari in the morning and an aurora hunt the same night, is also possible, and because each is a separate booking you can check dates and minimums for each. Leave a gap, and never plan a long aurora night before an early departure.

Frequently asked questions

When is Easter 2027 in Finland?
Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March. Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday is 29 March, and both are public holidays in Finland, alongside Easter Sunday itself. On the same Sunday the clocks go forward an hour in the European Union, so the morning after the change is a short night.

Is there still snow in Rovaniemi at Easter?
Usually there is plenty, but we cannot promise it, because conditions change from year to year. Late March is often the sunniest, brightest part of the winter season. The live calendar shows only dates that are on sale, and StayLapland can adjust routes or arrangements to conditions, so treat the calendar as your confirmation.

Do snowmobile safaris run on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday?
Whether a tour runs depends on the date being open in the live calendar and on the group reaching the minimum. The Wilderness Snowmobile Safari page says at least 2 people are required on weekdays and Saturdays and at least 4 on Sundays and public holidays. Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday all count as holidays, so read the notes for your date.

Can you still see the northern lights at Easter?
Sometimes, yes. Late March still has real darkness in the evening, and the small group Professional Northern Lights Hunting Tour (from €199) is built around chasing clear sky, with a 100% refund if no northern lights photos are captured. It is cancelled or rescheduled if fewer than 4 people are booked, or fewer than 6 on public holidays. Treat the lights as a bonus.

Can children join a snowmobile safari?
Children are welcome as passengers. The page says the tour is not recommended for children under 3, that you must be 18 or older to drive, and that a child who is 140 cm or taller can sit on a snowmobile while shorter children ride in a sled pulled by the guide's snowmobile. A driver's licence is required for anyone driving.

Does the reader discount work for Easter bookings?
Yes. Enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off every StayLapland tour, with no expiry. It is the only code we use, and it is applied in the booking window on this page.

What we would book

If we had one Easter weekend in Rovaniemi, we would book the Wilderness Snowmobile Safari5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for Saturday, a reindeer or snowshoe half-day for Sunday, and the northern lights hunt only if the forecast and the group size made it sensible. That gives you one big day, one calm day and one evening of possibility.

Use the live calendar below to see which dates are on sale, apply HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off every StayLapland tour, and read the holiday minimum in the notes before you pay.
