Rovaniemi in the Week Before Christmas: What to Book for 14–21 December 2026
Mid-December is when Rovaniemi feels most like Christmas, with a little more room than the peak days. Here is what we would book first for 14–21 December, with real prices.

If you ask us when the town feels most like Christmas, our answer is not the 24th. It is the week before. The lights along the streets are up, every café window has candles in it, and the schools have their Christmas parties. Locals are busy finishing their own preparations, and visitors arrive with that particular buzz of people who have been counting the days.
We live in Rovaniemi, and every December we watch the same pattern: people who travel between roughly the 14th and the 21st get the full Christmas magic with a little more breathing room than the peak days that follow. This guide is how we would plan that week, what to book first and what we would happily leave out.
For the week before Christmas, our first booking would be the Magical Private Santa Visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5: an exclusive 30-minute meeting with Santa, a gift for each child and a personal elf from pick-up to drop-off, from €249. Pair it with the Lapland Bucketlist Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles in about six hours, from €449) and a small-group aurora hunt5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €199). What the week before Christmas is really like
Mid-December is when Rovaniemi stops being a winter town and becomes a Christmas town. Snow cover is usually well established by now, though we never promise it, and the darkness has a soft, blue quality around midday that makes every string of lights look twice as bright.
The atmosphere is the reason to come. Santa Claus Village is in full swing, the town centre has its Christmas market feel, and there is an excitement in the air that is hard to explain until you are standing in it. Compared with the days right around Christmas, it can feel slightly less frantic, especially early in the week. That said, it is high season. Hotels, flights and the most popular tours fill well in advance, so do not mistake "a little calmer" for "quiet".
Our early December guide covers the first half of the month. This post is about the stretch from roughly 14 to 21 December 2026.
What to book first, and why
Our rule is to book the experience with the strictest limits first. In this week that is almost always Santa. Private visits have fixed slots, a minimum group size, and a stricter cancellation rule than most winter tours, so they need the earliest commitment.
Second come small-group experiences with capped seats, such as aurora hunts and combination days. Third, anything flexible enough to fit around the weather. If you book in that order you rarely end up rearranging your whole week because one slot was gone.
A practical point that catches people out: each StayLapland tour is a separate booking, so HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 needs to be entered every time. It is easy to remember on the first booking and forget by the third.
One more December detail worth knowing before you choose a hotel. Pick-ups within about 10 km of the city centre are included on the tours in this guide, but between 1 December and 10 January some tours only drop off at selected central locations. If you are staying in a cabin outside town, read the pick-up note in each booking window, and allow a little extra time on the days when you have back-to-back plans. It is a small thing that saves a lot of stress in the busiest weeks.
A private Santa visit, booked early
There is nothing wrong with queueing at Santa Claus Village, and plenty of families love it. But in the run-up to Christmas, waiting outside with tired children is a real cost. A private visit swaps that for a calm, personal moment that the children talk about all the way home.
The Magical Private Santa Visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is listed at about an hour and a half. It includes an exclusive 30-minute private meeting with Santa at his hide-out, a special gift from Santa for each child, warm berry juice and cookies, and a personal elf who stays with your family the whole time, from pick-up to drop-off within about 10 km of the city centre. It is from €249, and the live price for your group appears in the booking window.
The fine print matters more than usual here. It is free to cancel up to 7 days before; after that, the full price is charged. It needs at least two people on weekdays and Saturdays and at least four on Sundays and public holidays. Our Santa Claus Village vs private Santa visit guide explains the difference in more detail.
Book this if: the children are at the age where Santa is completely real. Skip this if: your group is all adults, and save the money for a husky day instead.
One big day: huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles together
Most visitors in the week before Christmas have between three and five days, and a long list. Combination days are the honest answer to "how do we fit it all in?" without doing three separate early pick-ups.
The Lapland Bucketlist Adventure with Huskies, Reindeer & Snowmobiles5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 lasts about six hours and is from €449 per adult. It includes about an hour of snowmobile driving time with full equipment, a 5 km self-driven husky sled ride, a 2–3 km reindeer sleigh ride, and an open-fire salmon soup lunch in a teepee with drinks, plus a photographer. The group is capped at 16, winter clothing is included, and pick-up within about 10 km of the centre is available on request.
Honest trade-offs: it is rated moderate, not easy, because driving both a snowmobile and a sled takes some energy. It is not suitable for children under 3, and in bad weather the husky part can become a shorter guide-driven ride. To drive the snowmobile yourself you need a driver's licence.
Northern lights in the darkest weeks
The week before Christmas sits close to the solstice, so the nights are as long as they get. That gives you many hours of darkness, but the lights still depend on solar activity and, above all, on clear skies. Cloud is the real enemy in December, which is why we prefer tours that drive to wherever the sky is clearest.
The Professional Small Group Northern Lights Hunting Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is from €199 per adult, with 2–8 guests and a professional guide and photographer. The start time varies between 17:00 and 21:00, confirmed by email by 14:00, and the evening typically lasts somewhere between four and ten hours depending on conditions. If no northern lights photos are captured, you get a 100% refund. For a lower price, the guaranteed bus hunt5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is from €109.
Our tip for this week: book the aurora for early in your stay. If the first night is cloudy, you still have time to try again before the Christmas rush. Our northern lights cost breakdown compares all the options side by side.
A five-day plan for 14–21 December
Day one, arrival. Settle in, walk through the centre in the afternoon blue light, and eat early. Keep it free of bookings in case your flight runs late.
Day two, the big day. The Bucketlist Adventure from late morning. It covers huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles in one go, so you have the core Lapland list done on your first full day.
Day three, Santa and a quiet evening. The private Santa visit at a time that suits the children, then a slow afternoon. If the forecast looks promising, this is a good aurora evening.
Day four, the frozen lake. Ice Fishing with Snowmobiles5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 starts at 11:00 daily and lasts around five hours, with about an hour of snowmobile driving, fishing gear and local food and drinks by the campfire in a teepee. It is from €149 per adult and is a lovely, unhurried counterweight to the busy days.
Day five, departure. Leave room for last presents and a final coffee by the river.
The upgrade: an evening in a private sauna
If you want one evening that feels completely Finnish in the run-up to Christmas, book sauna. Many Finnish families go to sauna on Christmas Eve, and the week before is a good time to understand why. Heat, steam, the hiss of water on hot stones, and then a cold plunge that makes you laugh out loud.
The Private Wooden Heated Sauna and Ice Swimming5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 gives your group a traditional wood-heated sauna to yourselves, a hand-cut ice hole, safety instructions, towels and a light local snack. Sessions start at 10:00, 14:00 and 19:00 and last about four hours, a minimum of two people is required, and the live price for your group shows in the booking window. Skip the ice hole if anyone has a heart condition; the sauna alone is still worth it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the week before Christmas a good time to visit Rovaniemi?
It is one of our favourite windows: the Christmas atmosphere is in full swing, but it is usually a little calmer than Christmas week itself. It is still high season, so book early.
When do we need to book a private Santa visit for mid-December?
As soon as your dates are fixed. Also note the cancellation rule: the Magical Private Santa Visit is free to cancel only up to 7 days before, so be sure of your plans before the week starts.
Can we fit huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles into one day?
Yes. The Lapland Bucketlist Adventure combines all three in about six hours, with a salmon soup lunch and a photographer included, from €449 per adult.
Do we need a driving licence for snowmobile tours?
To drive a snowmobile yourself you need a driver's licence. Passengers, including those riding behind a driver, do not.
How short are the days in mid-December?
Very short. Daylight is low and brief this close to the solstice, so we schedule outdoor activities around late morning and midday and keep the evenings for aurora or sauna.
Can we use a discount code on Christmas-season tours?
Yes. HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 gives 5% off every StayLapland tour, with no expiry and no blackout dates, so it works in the week before Christmas too.
Our final pick for the week before Christmas
If you are travelling with children, book the Magical Private Santa Visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 first, as early as you can, and be sure of your dates because of the 7-day cancellation rule. Then add the Bucketlist Adventure for one big day and an aurora hunt early in your stay. If you are travelling as adults, swap Santa for the sauna evening and keep the rest.
