Helka’s building is modern and fresh, but what makes it memorable is the artistic streak running through it. The corridors and walls are genuinely special — each corner slightly different, so that wandering the hotel becomes a small gallery visit. We found ourselves taking the long way to the lift on purpose, which has never once happened to us in a chain hotel.

The atmosphere is the other half of the story. The whole place feels Finnish in the best sense: unfussy, warm, quietly confident. The reception team were super friendly and polite — a really good level of service that stayed consistent through the whole stay. Our room: space, street views and your own coffee corner

Our room looked out over the city street — a view we love in Helsinki, where the streets themselves are calm enough to be scenery — and it was really spacious by city-centre standards. All the necessities were covered and then some: a proper bed, a sofa for actual lounging, and your own coffee and tea setup in the room, which in a country as coffee-serious as Finland is not a small thing.

The bathroom deserves its own mention: genuinely excellent — modern, well designed, the kind you make a mental note about. Everything was spotless. It is the sort of room that works equally well for a couple’s city break, a family stay or a business trip, which is exactly the range Helka seems built for.

Saunas, massages and the bar

A Helsinki hotel without a sauna is a missed opportunity; Helka does it properly. There is a Finnish sauna for guests — separate saunas for men and women, in the traditional way — and if you want to complete the recovery program, massages are available too. We did not manage to book one ourselves, but we have heard so many good words about the massages here that we are noting it for next time; after a long flight or a Lapland-to-Helsinki train, that combination is a genuinely great idea.

Downstairs, the hotel has a bar for the evening hours. Our routine wrote itself: a walk through the city, a sauna, a quiet drink, and one of the deepest sleeps of the trip. Helsinki does not demand intensity from its visitors, and Helka has clearly understood this.

The breakfast — a genuinely high bar

We are Finns. We hold hotel breakfasts to a national standard. And Helka’s breakfast was actually amazing — a really high-level breakfast that not every Finnish hotel can match.

The selection was generous and the quality real: warm options like omelettes, pancakes and porridge; a properly Finnish spread of breads and cheeses; vegetables, ham and everything you could reasonably imagine wanting at 8 a.m.; juices, good coffee, pastries. It had Finnish style and touch throughout rather than the interchangeable international buffet — and after weeks of travelling, it was the breakfast equivalent of clean sheets: restorative.

The location: everything is ten minutes away

Helka sits right in the Helsinki city centre, and the numbers tell the story: the main railway station is about ten minutes away, the bus station around five — perfect if you are continuing to other Finnish destinations — and the shopping centres and main sights are all within an easy walk. Come from the airport by public transport and you are at the door without a taxi.
