Baltic Summer Road Trip: Tallinn, Riga & Beyond in 7 Days
We drove the Baltic road trip summer route ourselves — Tallinn to Riga through medieval old towns, amber-coloured beaches, and the kind of countryside that makes you pull over three times before lunch. Here’s the honest, tested itinerary.
The Baltic road trip summer route — Tallinn south through Latvia and on to Lithuania — was one of those trips we nearly skipped. We were living in Rovaniemi, already deep into Nordic travel, and the Baltics felt like a detour rather than a destination. We were wrong. After two separate visits to Tallinn and one long summer drive through the region, we can tell you this route punches well above its weight.
This is the seven-day itinerary we’d actually repeat: honest about the slow bits, specific about the things worth rushing for, and built around the rhythm that worked for us as a couple driving through a region neither of us fully knew.
A Baltic summer road trip connecting Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius takes 7 days comfortably — start in Tallinn (ferry from Helsinki), drive south through Pärnu and Sigulda to Riga (2–3 nights), then continue to Vilnius via the Hill of Crosses. Budget around €80–130 per day for two, including accommodation. Summer is the best season: long light, festivals, and open-air everything.
Why the Baltic road trip works so well in summer
We first came to Tallinn on a day trip from Helsinki — just the two-and-a-half-hour ferry across the Gulf of Finland. That visit sold us. The old town is compact and genuinely medieval, the food scene has improved enormously in recent years, and prices feel almost comically cheap compared to Scandinavia. We came back for longer.
The case for driving rather than flying
The Baltic states are small. Estonia is roughly the size of Denmark. Latvia and Lithuania together are about the size of the UK’s Scotland. What this means is that a car unlocks the spaces between cities — the bog trails in Lahemaa, the dunes at Jürmala, the half-timbered farmsteads in the Latvian countryside — that make the region feel genuinely different from Western Europe.
- Distance: Tallinn to Riga is about 310 km, a comfortable 3.5-hour drive with stops.
- Riga to Vilnius is another 300 km — same logic, with the Hill of Crosses making a natural midpoint.
- Roads are good. The Via Baltica (E67) runs the whole length. Some rural roads are rougher, but nothing a regular hatchback can’t handle.
- Car rental: check that your rental agreement permits driving across all three countries. Most do, but always confirm in writing.
Why summer specifically
The Baltics have short winters and glorious summers. In June and July the days are almost as long as in Finland — we had golden light until nearly 11 pm in Riga. Open-air markets, summer festivals, and beach towns like Pärnu and Jürmala come alive. It’s also the busiest season, so book accommodation at least two weeks ahead for Tallinn and Riga old town.
How to plan the Baltic road trip summer route step by step
The route is linear: Tallinn → Pärnu → Riga → Sigulda (day trip) → Jürmala (beach break) → Vilnius. You fly or ferry in at one end and fly home from Vilnius, or loop back depending on your schedule.
Getting to Tallinn from Finland
Tallink Silja and Eckerö Line both run overnight and daytime ferries from Helsinki to Tallinn. The journey takes about 2.5 hours on the fast ferry. We always book a cabin for the overnight option — you arrive rested and save a night’s accommodation. Book 4–6 weeks ahead in summer; the ferries fill up fast.
All major rental companies operate at Tallinn port and airport. We recommend picking up at the port if you’re arriving by ferry — it saves the taxi to the airport and you’re already on the road. Confirm cross-border permission for Latvia and Lithuania at pickup.
The direct E67 motorway is fast but bland. Take the coastal road south through Häädemeeste and along the beach to Pärnu — it adds maybe 30 minutes but the scenery is genuinely beautiful and you won’t regret it.
Riga has more depth than it first appears. One day for the old town is enough for a quick visit; two days lets you reach Art Nouveau district, the Central Market, and the beach suburb of Jürmala. We’d choose two nights without hesitation.

- Day 1 — Tallinn: Arrive by ferry, check in to the old town or Kalamaja neighbourhood. Walk the town wall, climb Toompea, eat at Leib Resto. Evening: harbour bars.
- Day 2 — Tallinn + Lahemaa: Morning at the Tallinn market. Afternoon drive to Lahemaa National Park (60 km east) — bog trail at Viru Raba, manor house at Palmse. Sleep in Tallinn or a guesthouse in Lahemaa.
- Day 3 — Drive to Pärnu + Riga: Head south on the coastal road. Stop for a swim and lunch in Pärnu. Continue to Riga — arrive early evening. First dinner in the old town.
- Day 4 — Riga: Art Nouveau district in the morning (Alberta iela is the main street). Central Market in the afternoon. Roof terrace bar at sunset. This is our favourite day of the whole trip.
- Day 5 — Sigulda day trip + Jürmala: Drive 50 km east to Sigulda for the medieval castle ruins and Gauja river valley. Return via Jürmala beach — 25 km west of Riga — for a late afternoon swim.
- Day 6 — Drive to Vilnius via Hill of Crosses: Leave Riga south on E67. Stop at the Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai — genuinely moving, give yourself an hour. Arrive Vilnius for dinner in the Užupis artist district.
- Day 7 — Vilnius: Baroque old town, Gediminas Tower, Halės Market. Afternoon flights home, or extend into the Curonian Spit if you have more time.
