Most hotel reviews start with the lobby. This one has to start with a parking lot in a mountain village, because reaching Twin Villas Komani Lake is an adventure in its own right — and honestly, that is a large part of why we loved it.

Komani Lake is the long, winding reservoir in northern Albania that travel photos keep comparing to a fjord, and for once the comparison holds. We came for one of the lake’s famous boat rides and stayed in the wooden villas on its shore — and left convinced this was one of the most special places we have slept in 25 countries of travelling.

Getting there is half the adventure

Here is the honest logistics briefing we wish we had read beforehand. You drive to Koman, the village at the dam end of the lake. You do not drive to the villas — nobody does. Instead:

• Parking: the paid lots around Koman cost about €5 per day. They sit roughly two kilometres from the ferry dock, and the parking operators run minibus shuttles to the dock — you will not be hiking with your luggage.
• Tickets and boats: at the ferry station you are assigned to a boat based on where you are going. It sounds chaotic; it works fine.
• The hosts make it easy: the owner — one of the two brothers who run the villas — messaged us in advance with exactly how to reach the boat, how to buy tickets and where to leave the car. That advance help took all the stress out of a genuinely unusual arrival.

From the boat drop-off, you walk a few hundred metres — call it one or two hundred — along a natural path through the greenery, and then the villas appear.

The ferry ride across Komani Lake

The ride to the villas takes over an hour one way, and we want to be clear about something: this is not a transfer, it is an attraction. Possibly the attraction. The lake narrows and bends between cliffs and green mountains, the water shifts colour with the light, and the whole landscape has a mysterious, closed-in drama that we have not seen anywhere else in Europe — and we say that as people who have driven most of Norway.

We barely sat down. You do not get off the boat for the views because you do not need to — they come to you, continuously, for the entire hour. If you are the kind of traveller who ranks journeys, put this one high on the list; if you stay at the villas, it is simply how you commute.

The villas: simple huts, spectacular setting

The villas themselves are wooden huts built from natural materials, fully integrated into the nature around them. The look is simple — this is not a design hotel and does not pretend to be — but the setting does the heavy lifting, and what a setting it is. We believe the view from these villas is one of the best you can get anywhere on Komani Lake: water, cliffs and mountains, arranged like someone composed them.

Living in a small wooden hut in this landscape has a particular magic. You wake up with the view. You drink your morning coffee with the view. There are no city lights within reach, so when night falls the sky goes properly dark — more on that below. It is a deeply romantic place in the old sense of the word: nature, quiet, and nothing demanding your attention except the scenery.

Food: a family kitchen worth the boat ride

The villas are a family business, and the food tastes like it. Everything we ate was homemade, fresh and clearly cooked from well-sourced ingredients by someone who knows what they are doing. Breakfast leans traditional — fresh, generous and exactly right after a lake-morning swim in the view (metaphorically; ask the hosts about actual swimming).

Our favourite dish of the stay — and honestly one of our favourites of the entire trip — was an eggplant dish we have been trying to describe to friends ever since. We are a travel blog, not a food blog, so we will just say this: you are a boat ride from the nearest restaurant, and you will not mind at all.

Nights on the lake — bring your stargazing eyes

Here is the memory we keep coming back to. Because the villas sit far from any city or its lights, the night sky over Komani Lake is extraordinary — the kind of star field we normally associate with deep Lapland winter, transplanted onto a warm Albanian summer night. We sat outside our cabin doing absolutely nothing except looking up, and it was one of the best evenings of the whole trip.

This is also where the villas’ peacefulness really lands. There is no soundtrack: no traffic, no bars, no hum. Just water, mountains and the occasional boat. If your life is loud — and whose isn’t — two nights here recalibrate something.

Going further up the lake

If you want more of the lake, you can continue by ferry deeper into the valley toward the remote villages further along the water — ask the hosts about routes and timings, as these change with the season. We would happily have spent another day doing exactly that.
