Here is a travel opinion we did not expect to hold: on our next Albania trip, we would again sleep outside Tirana — on purpose, happily, and specifically at a hotel a few minutes from the airport.

That is not a complaint about Tirana. It is a compliment to a strategy. Hotel Erandi sits close to Tirana International Airport, and from its quiet, modern rooms you can reach the capital, the beach city of Durrës, the shopping centres and — our favourite — the mountains and waterfalls around Bovilla Lake, all without ever fighting for city parking. We stayed two nights at the start of our Albanian leg, and this is our honest review.

The location strategy: why sleeping near the airport works in Albania

Most travellers treat airport hotels as a sad necessity. Erandi flips that logic, because of where Tirana’s airport happens to sit: a few minutes from the hotel, close to the motorway network, with Tirana in one direction, Durrës and the sea in the other, and the Bovilla mountains behind. From here, everything is a spoke and you are the hub.

• Arrival and departure days stop being wasted days. You land, and in minutes you are checked in. You leave, and there is no 5 a.m. cross-city taxi gamble.
• Tirana is close — go explore the city for as long as you want, then retreat to quiet.
• Durrës and the coast are an easy drive — big city, famous beaches, done as a day trip.
• Bovilla Lake is roughly 15 km away — the mountain reservoir with its dramatic viewpoint, plus waterfalls in the area. For us, a must-go.

If your Albania plan is “see a lot without moving hotels every night”, this location is quietly perfect.

The rooms: new, modern, properly spacious

The hotel is quite new and it shows — in the good way. The interior is modern throughout, the rooms feel fresh rather than worn, and ours was genuinely spacious: we stayed in a room that sleeps three, and we saw that larger rooms exist for families who need more beds still.

The essentials are all handled: air conditioning (in an Albanian August, this is not an amenity, it is life support), a minibar, comfortable beds and a clean, contemporary bathroom. After days of mountain roads and +38°C afternoons, walking into a cool, quiet, modern room felt like a small ceasefire.

Two things stood out for families in particular: the extra space, and the quiet. You are not in the city, so nights are calm — the kind of sleep you do not get on a bar street in any capital.

Restaurant, bar and the practical stuff

Reception doubles as the hotel’s social hub: there is a bar and a restaurant, so breakfast, lunch and dinner are all solved without getting back into the car — which, on arrival and departure days, is exactly what you want. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay, which matches everything else we experienced of Albanian hospitality.

And then there is the unsung hero of any Balkan road trip: parking. Erandi has plenty of it, spacious and simple. If you have ever circled a Balkan old town at 22:00 looking for a legal spot, you know why we mention this with real feeling.

• Bar + restaurant at reception: breakfast, lunch and dinner on site.
• Friendly staff: helpful with directions and day-trip advice.
• Spacious parking: stress level zero, which is rare and precious.
• Shopping centres nearby: handy for road-trip supplies before heading north or south.

The capital is close enough to explore for as long as you like — a morning, a full day, an evening — and then leave behind. We are city people in small doses, especially at +38°C, and this arrangement suited us perfectly.

Durrës and the coast

In the other direction lies Durrës, Albania’s big coastal city, with the sea and long beaches. It is an easy drive, and you can be swimming within the hour without paying seaside hotel rates.

Bovilla Lake — the reason to stay an extra night

About 15 kilometres from the hotel are Bovilla Lake and its mountains — the turquoise reservoir in a rocky bowl that has become one of the Tirana area’s most famous views, with waterfalls in the surrounding area too. We called it a must-go in our notes the same evening. Go early in the day in summer, take water, and check current access before you drive up, as conditions on the final stretch vary.

Who this hotel is really for

After two nights, we had a clear picture of Erandi’s natural guests:

• Road-trippers starting or ending an Albanian loop — this is the logical first and last night.
• Families — spacious rooms (three beds and up), quiet nights, easy parking, restaurant downstairs. Travelling with kids, you would feel the benefit of every one of those.
• Flexible explorers who want Tirana, the sea and the mountains available every morning without committing to any of them the night before.
• Anyone with an awkward flight time — minutes to the terminal turns a 6 a.m. departure from a crisis into an inconvenience.

Who is it not for? Travellers who want to fall out of their hotel door into café streets and nightlife. That trip exists in Tirana proper — it is just a different trip.
