Crossing back into Croatia felt like the Balkans exhaling: the driving calmed, the espresso got serious, and a rock beach near Split gave us the cleanest, warmest swim of our travelling lives. We left owing this country a longer visit.

We were there in August, and our honest report from Split: 2–3 hours of city was our maximum before the pavement heat sent us to the sea. The sea, to be fair, is a spectacular consolation prize.
May–June and September–October are the obvious answers for city-walking, island-hopping and the historic centres — warm water, human temperatures, thinner crowds. That’s precisely the trip we’ve promised ourselves next.

Split & Diocletian’s Palace. A living Roman palace with a city grown through it — stunning architecture, fascinating history, and best consumed in the morning or evening in summer.
The rock beaches. Forget sand: the Split-area beach we found was all rock — and the water was insanely clean, warm and clear, one of the best swims we’ve ever had anywhere. Water shoes turn ‘ouch’ into paradise.
Driving the coast. After the rest of the Balkans, Croatian driving feels like a spa day — lane discipline, patient merges, EU-smooth logistics.
Next time: the islands and more. Hvar, Brač, Dubrovnik, Plitvice — we’re saving them for shoulder season, on purpose, and saying so honestly.
Where to base yourself
For a Balkan-loop bookend, the Split area is the natural hub: fly-drive logistics, ferries, and beaches within minutes. We slept two nights just outside the city near the water — cheaper, cooler, and the beach was better than the famous ones in town.
For a dedicated Croatia trip, base inside Split’s old town in shoulder season (heat makes it hard work in August), or pick an island and slow down properly.
Getting around
The easiest driving of our whole route: good roads, calm drivers, clear signage. Croatia is in the EU, Schengen and the eurozone, so borders, currency and roaming all switch to easy mode.
Tolls exist on the motorways and parking in Split rewards arriving early or staying outside the centre. Ferries expand everything — the island network is the country’s real motorway.
Food and drink
Our sample was small but happy: seaside meals around Split, serious coffee, and prices noticeably above the rest of the Balkans — the trade-off for EU convenience. Konoba (tavern) menus reward pointing at whatever the boat brought in.
We’re deliberately saving Croatia’s food chapter for the longer shoulder-season trip. Preliminary verdict: promising, fund accordingly.

What a day in Croatia costs
Croatia was the priciest stop of our route — August coast prices for two adults travelling mid-range. Shoulder season softens the accommodation line substantially.

Respect August. Two hours of old town, then the sea — that’s the sustainable summer rhythm. Or just come in September.
Buy water shoes on day one. Rock beaches have the clearest water and the least mercy.
Build in flight slack. Our outbound flight was cancelled and cost us a Croatia day — buffer the bookends of a multi-country loop.
Use Croatia as your Balkan bookend. Arrive and depart here: the logistics are the region’s smoothest.
Our take
Croatia got the shortest visit and left the longest promise. Split’s architecture stunned us, the driving calmed us, and one rock beach delivered the best swim of our lives — but August asked more than we could give it. We’re coming back in shoulder season to walk the cities slowly and take the ferries far. Some countries you review; this one we’ve scheduled.

Common questions
Is Croatia expensive compared to the rest of the Balkans?
Yes — it was the priciest stop on our route, especially August accommodation on the coast. In exchange you get EU/Schengen ease, the euro, calm driving and that coastline. Shoulder season narrows the gap considerably.
Are Croatian beaches really all rocks?
Mostly rock and pebble around Split, yes — and that’s exactly why the water is so insanely clear. Bring water shoes and the rock beaches become a feature, not a bug.
