The two words get used interchangeably by a lot of travel sites, but on the ground in Sweden they’re genuinely different vehicles with different driving experiences, different parking realities, and a real price gap between them.

We’ve road-tripped across every Nordic country over the years, in everything from a cramped rooftop-tent car to a full-size motorhome, so this isn’t a theoretical comparison. This is what each class of vehicle actually feels like to live in and drive around Sweden for a week or two.

Short answer

A campervan (a converted van, usually 2–4 berth) is the better choice for most Sweden road trips — it’s easier to park in cities like Stockholm, cheaper to rent and to fuel, and nimble enough for narrow forest roads. A motorhome (a larger, coach-built vehicle, often 4–6 berth with a separate bathroom) earns its size if you’re travelling as a family of four or more, want a fixed indoor toilet and shower, or plan to spend more nights parked up than driving. Prices on CampervanPlanet for Sweden run from around €49/day for a basic campervan in shoulder season up to €219/day for a larger family motorhome.

In this guide

Campervan vs motorhome: what’s actually different

Driving and parking in Sweden

Where you’ll actually sleep

Price gap: what each one costs

Who should pick which

Fuel, roads and tolls in Sweden

Our honest recommendation

🚐 Planning this trip by campervan? Get €20 off your rental in Sweden with our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20
Compare campervans →

If you book through our links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you — it keeps this blog on the road.

Campervan vs motorhome: what’s actually different

A campervan is built on a van chassis — think a converted Mercedes Sprinter, VW Crafter or similar — and usually sleeps two to four people in a layout that’s part living space, part bed, with a small kitchenette and sometimes a basic wet room. A motorhome is a larger, coach-built vehicle on a separate chassis, with more headroom, a proper fixed bed (not one you build each night from the seating), and almost always a separate bathroom with a real shower and toilet.

The practical difference shows up the moment you’re driving: a campervan handles like a tall van, which most people adjust to within a day. A motorhome handles like what it is — a small bus — and takes a bit more getting used to on narrower Swedish backroads or when reversing into a tight pitch.

Driving and parking in Sweden

Sweden’s main roads are excellent and the E4 motorway running north from Stockholm is completely toll-free, which helps either vehicle class. Where the two diverge is in cities and smaller towns. Stockholm and Gothenburg get genuinely busy in peak summer, and a compact campervan is noticeably easier to find street parking for, or to slot into a regular car park, than a full-size motorhome. If your Sweden trip includes more than a night or two in a city centre, that’s worth weighing seriously.

Once you’re out on forest roads and smaller island-hopping routes — the kind of driving that makes a Sweden road trip worthwhile in the first place — the campervan’s smaller turning circle and narrower width make a real difference. We’ve taken a motorhome down single-track gravel roads in rural Sweden and it is doable, just slower and more deliberate than it would be in a van.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. You can’t legally treat allemansrätten as a free campervan parking policy the way some trip blogs imply. In practice, campervans and motorhomes overnight at proper campsites or at a ställplats — a dedicated motorhome aire, often with power and water hookups — rather than pulling off into a forest the way a backpacker with a tent might.

This matters equally for both vehicle types, but it narrows the gap between them a little: since you’re paying for a site either way, a motorhome’s extra comfort (a real bed you don’t have to make up, a proper bathroom) counts for more than it would if you were genuinely free-camping every night. A Camping Key Europe card, worth looking into before you go, adds discounts at a large network of sites across Scandinavia for a modest annual fee.

Price gap: what each one costs

On CampervanPlanet, which compares prices across Swedish rental companies, a basic campervan in Sweden starts from around €49/day in the May–September shoulder season, with peak summer pricing for comfort-class vans running roughly €89–180/day. Step up to a proper 4–6 berth family motorhome and you’re looking at roughly €189–219/day starting price. Over a two-week trip, that gap compounds into a genuinely significant difference in the total cost of the holiday.

Fuel adds to the gap too — a motorhome’s larger engine and weight mean noticeably higher fuel consumption than a campervan over the same distance, on top of the higher daily rental rate.

Who should pick which

Choose a campervan if: you’re a couple or small family of up to four, you want to combine city stops with rural driving, you’re watching the budget, or this is your first time renting a vehicle like this and would rather ease into it. The real cost to budget for instead is Stockholm’s camera-based congestion charge if your route takes you through the city centre, and the standard running costs of fuel, which are higher for a motorhome than a campervan over the same distance. If your Sweden route connects onward to Denmark, it’s also worth knowing ferries like the Gothenburg–Frederikshavn crossing run in the region of €70–130 for a vehicle, which applies to either vehicle class and is worth building into your budget if that’s part of your trip.

Our honest recommendation

If you’re planning one Sweden road trip and aren’t sure which way to go, default to the campervan — it’s the more forgiving choice for a first-timer, it’s cheaper to rent and run, and it copes better with the mix of cities and backroads that makes a Swedish road trip worth doing.
