We know &#8220;touristy&#8221; is usually a warning label on travel blogs. Here, we mean it as a compliment \u2014 the town knows exactly what it is, and it does that thing well.<\/p>\n<p>What that looks like on the ground: a beach that seems to go on forever, boat rentals waiting along the shore, and caf\u00e9s and restaurants absolutely everywhere. You are never more than a minute from a cold drink or a shaded table, which in a Balkan August is not a small thing. There&#8217;s none of the velvet-rope feel that parts of Budva or Kotor can have in peak season; the energy is closer to a big, friendly public holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Ulcinj also feels culturally distinct from the rest of the Montenegrin coast. It&#8217;s widely described as the most Albanian-influenced town in the country \u2014 you&#8217;ll notice it in the skyline, the language around you and the food on offer. From the north, it&#8217;s the last major town on the coastal road, beyond Bar. If you&#8217;re renting a car, make sure your rental paperwork covers every country on your route, including the green card insurance question \u2014 rules and fees change, so confirm with your rental company before you travel.<\/p>\n<p>Two hard-won pieces of driving advice from our trip.
