Four countries meant crossing an external EU border several times over: every time you drive out of Croatia into Bosnia or Montenegro, you are exiting the EU and the Schengen area, and every return is a full re-entry.<\/p><p>That is the single most useful thing to understand about this route. Within Schengen you barely notice borders; here, each one is a proper checkpoint with passport control, and often two of them back to back \u2014 one booth for the country you are leaving, one for the country you are entering. Sometimes they sit a few hundred metres apart, sometimes they share a building. Either way, you will be handing documents through the car window, so keep them within reach rather than buried under the beach bags.<\/p><p>One quirk if you drive Croatia&rsquo;s coastal road: a short strip of Bosnian coastline at Neum interrupts Dalmatia, so depending on your route you may cross a border you did not plan for. We travelled at absolute peak season, in heat that reached the high thirties and beyond, and the whole region was on the move \u2014 locals, diaspora families driving home, and tourists like us, all funnelling through the same handful of checkpoints.<\/p><p>You cannot control the queue, but you can control when you join it. The patterns locals seem to follow make intuitive sense: cross early in the morning or in the evening rather than midday, avoid the biggest coastal crossings on summer weekends if a smaller inland one fits your route, and never plan a crossing for the exact hour you also need to make a ferry, a check-in or a tour. Build slack into border days. We treated any day with a crossing as a half-day of driving, and it kept the trip calm.<\/p><p>The other half of calm is mindset. Balkan traffic has a rhythm of its own \u2014 more beeping, more improvisation, less Nordic patience \u2014 and a border queue is that rhythm concentrated into 500 metres. Someone will try to merge late; let them. Croatia uses the euro, and so \u2014 a little surprisingly \u2014 does Montenegro. Bosnia has its own convertible mark, and Albania uses the lek, so a route through all four means keeping loose track of three currencies. Cards were widely accepted where we went, but small cash in the local currency is worth having for roadside stops; sort it after the border rather than carrying large amounts across.<\/p><p>The trap that actually caught our attention: <strong>EU roaming does not cover Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina<\/strong>. Croatia is inside the EU roaming zone, and your operator may or may not include Montenegro or Albania in some package \u2014 but Bosnia was the clear gap for us, and data prices without a plan can sting.
