This post is the honest, practical version of what we’ve learned: why automatics are the exception rather than the rule here, roughly what the premium looks like, and how early you actually need to book to have a real choice.

🚐 Planning this trip by campervan? Get 5% off your rental in Iceland with our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5

    Compare campervans →

If you book through our links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you — it keeps this blog on the road.

Why automatic campervans are the exception in Iceland

Manual transmission has historically been the default across Icelandic rental fleets, for a fairly practical reason: a lot of the vehicle stock here started life built for, or alongside, 4x4s intended for gravel roads, F-roads and rougher terrain, where manual gearboxes have long been the norm and cheaper to maintain in a small, remote market. Purpose-built campervans and small motorhomes aimed at the international tourist market have added more automatic options over the years, but they still make up a minority of the overall fleet compared with manual vans.

What this means in practice: automatic isn’t rare because operators are hiding it from you, it’s rare because there are simply fewer automatic vehicles in the country’s rental pool at any given time, especially outside the biggest 2WD campervan operators aimed squarely at visitors who don’t want to drive a manual gearbox on unfamiliar roads.

How much of a price premium should you actually expect

Automatic transmission tends to carry a premium over manual almost everywhere in the world, and Iceland is no exception — if anything the gap can be a bit wider here simply because supply is thinner. We’d hedge rather than quote you a fixed number: expect automatic to cost noticeably more per day than the manual equivalent of the same van, with the exact gap depending on the operator, the season and how far ahead you book. Comparing live quotes across multiple companies rather than assuming a single “typical” premium is the only reliable way to know what you’ll actually pay for your dates.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. In our experience the automatic options in any given fleet sell out well before the manual ones for the same pickup dates, particularly across the June–August peak, so a smaller pool of vehicles empties faster even at similar demand.

Shoulder season — May or September — tends to give you noticeably more room to find an automatic, both because overall demand is lower and because the vehicles that would already be booked in July are often still sitting available. If your travel dates are flexible at all, that’s the single easiest lever to pull.

What to actually check before you book

A few things worth confirming directly with whichever operator you’re comparing, since these details vary by company and we don’t want to hand you a number we can’t stand behind: the exact transmission type of the specific van model (not just “automatic available” as a fleet-wide claim), whether the automatic option is 2WD or 4×4 if you’re planning any F-road driving, the insurance excess and whether a gravel or sand-and-ash protection add-on is included or optional, and the cancellation policy if your dates are still soft. None of these are Iceland-specific quirks, but they matter more here because a wrong assumption is harder to fix once you’ve landed and the fleet you wanted is gone.

If you’re still deciding between a campervan and a proper motorhome for the trip in the first place, we’ve laid out that decision in more detail in Motorhome or Campervan for Iceland? Iceland’s Ring Road (Route 1) is paved and well-maintained for the vast majority of its length, and driving a manual on a normal paved road is a very different, much gentler experience than city stop-start traffic. If you already drive manual at home even occasionally, you’ll likely be fine within the first hour. Where we’d push back on “just learn it for the trip”: winter driving, gravel F-roads, or a first-time manual driver tackling both a new gearbox and unfamiliar road conditions at once. That combination is where we’d spend the extra money on an automatic rather than save it.

Best times of year to actually find one available

Shoulder season (May, September, sometimes into early June or October) is your best window for automatic availability without paying peak-season prices on top of the transmission premium. Winter (roughly November through March) narrows things further, since a larger share of the automatic-capable fleet tends to be 4×4 models better suited to snow and ice, and overall fleet size shrinks as some operators reduce their off-season stock. If winter is when you’re travelling, we’ve written separately about what that actually involves in Can You Rent a Campervan in Iceland in Winter?, including how that affects vehicle choice.

Whatever the season, the practical rule is the same: the earlier you lock in an automatic, the more of the fleet you’re actually choosing from rather than picking over. If it’s a genuine need — no manual experience at all, or travelling with someone who can’t share the driving on a manual — we’d book the automatic the moment our dates were fixed, accept the premium as the cost of removing that risk, and not wait to “see if a better price comes up,” since the risk with automatics in Iceland is availability disappearing, not price dropping. If it’s a mild preference, we’d compare live automatic and manual quotes for our actual dates side by side before deciding the premium was worth it, rather than assuming a fixed percentage either way.

Either way, we’d cross-check the quote against a few other operators first — our campervan rental guide walks through the comparison process in more detail if you haven’t rented one in the Nordics or Iceland before, and the 5% code applies regardless of which company you end up booking with.

Ready for the open road?

Book your Iceland campervan

Compare prices across 160+ campervan and motorhome rental brands, get a free 1GB eSIM with every booking — and 5% off with code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5.

  Check prices & availability →

Affiliate link — same price for you, small commission for us.

Frequently asked questions

<details>
Are automatic campervans hard to find in Iceland?

Harder than manual, yes — manual has historically been the default across a large share of Icelandic rental fleets. Automatic options exist, especially among the bigger 2WD campervan operators aimed at tourists, but the pool is smaller, so they tend to book out earlier for popular dates, especially in peak summer.
</details>
<details>
How much more does an automatic campervan cost in Iceland?

Expect a noticeable premium over the manual equivalent, though the exact gap varies by operator, vehicle and season — we’d rather send you to compare live quotes for your specific dates than quote a fixed percentage we can’t verify held true when you book.
</details>
<details>
How far ahead should I book an automatic campervan?

Earlier than you would for a manual van, especially for June–August travel. Shoulder season (May or September) generally leaves more automatic options available closer to your travel dates.
</details>
<details>
Is a 4×4 automatic necessary, or is 2WD fine?

It depends on your route. If you’re sticking to the paved Ring Road and sealed connecting roads, 2WD is generally fine in summer. If you’re planning any F-road or highland driving, you’ll want 4×4 regardless of transmission — confirm this specifically with the operator, since automatic 4×4 options are the smallest slice of the fleet.
</details>
<details>
Is it worth learning to drive manual just for an Iceland trip?

For many travellers, yes, particularly if you already have some manual experience — the paved Ring Road is a gentle environment to practise in. We’d stick with automatic instead if you’re a first-time manual driver combined with winter conditions or gravel F-roads, where you don’t want to be learning two new things at once.
</details>
<details>
Does the automatic premium apply to insurance too?

Not inherently — insurance excess and add-on protection (gravel, sand-and-ash cover) are usually priced separately from the transmission type. Always check the excess and what’s included specifically for the van you’re quoted, rather than assuming it scales with the rental price.
</details>

J&A

Joona & Alla

A Finnish-Ukrainian couple living in Rovaniemi, Finland.
