Two weeks is comfortable; anything less means cutting a country, not trimming days.

In this review

The route we actually drove (and the day we lost)

Croatia: the bookends of the trip

Bosnia & Herzegovina: the drive-through that surprised us

Montenegro: four days, one perfect base

Albania: the heart of the trip

Building your own Balkan road trip itinerary: how many days where

The route we actually drove (and the day we lost)

On paper the loop was simple: land near Split, pick up a rental car, drive south-east through Bosnia & Herzegovina into Montenegro, continue to Albania, then retrace the coast back to Croatia and fly home to Finland. In practice, our outbound flight from Poland was cancelled and we arrived a day late — and the day that vanished was our Croatia day. One planning lesson from us: put your buffer day at the start of the route, because that is where a delayed arrival bites.

The shape of the trip ended up as roughly one hurried day in Croatia at the start, a driving day through Bosnia with a swim stop, four days in Montenegro, five to six days in Albania, and two calm nights back near Split before flying home via Joensuu and Helsinki. The rental car was the spine of the whole thing — distances between the highlights are short on the map and slow on the road.

Was the order right? Mostly, yes. Doing the long drives early and ending with two unhurried Croatian beach days was the best decision we made. Arriving back in Split felt like exhaling.

Croatia: the bookends of the trip

Croatia gave us the shortest and the sweetest days. At the start we had only a rushed day in the Split area, and in August that city asks a lot of you: we lasted two to three hours among the old stones before the heat sent us to the sea. The architecture is stunning and the history is fascinating — Diocletian’s city deserves slow wandering — but +35 °C is not the temperature for it. We have already agreed to come back in a cooler season and do Split properly.

The two nights on the way back were a different story. Our beach near Split turned out to be one of the best we have ever had: a rock beach rather than sand, with insanely clean, warm water. After ten days of Balkan mountain roads, crossing back into Croatia felt like coming back to Europe — the driving calmed down noticeably at the border, and we could feel our shoulders drop.

Do this if you want a gentle landing and a gentle exit for the loop. Skip the midday old town if you are travelling in high summer — do mornings and evenings in the city, afternoons in the water.

Bosnia & Herzegovina: the drive-through that surprised us

We only drove through Bosnia, and it still earned its place on the route. The roads were great, petrol and groceries were noticeably cheaper than in Montenegro or Croatia, and the people we met were some of the friendliest of the whole trip. If your schedule allows a night here, we suspect it rewards more time than we gave it.

Our one real stop was Kravica Waterfalls, and our timing was accidental genius. We sat in a traffic jam on the way and rolled in around 17:00, exactly as the day-trip crowds were leaving. We swam right under the falls — the water is properly cold, which in a +35 °C August is a feature, not a bug — and the whole place is a well set-up holiday spot with restaurants, bars and ice cream around it. Late afternoon is the slot we would aim for on purpose next time.

One practical warning that caught us off guard: EU roaming does not cover Bosnia. Finnish and other EU plans that work fine in Croatia go silent at the border, so sort out an eSIM before you cross. We used YesSim later in Albania — the best rate we found, and the internet was flawless — and Airalo is a solid alternative if you prefer their app.

Free Rovaniemi Planner

Get our 3-day Rovaniemi planner + 5% activity discount

Honest travel letters from the Arctic — real trips, real costs, no sponsored fluff.

Send it to me

Montenegro: four days, one perfect base

Montenegro got four days of our loop, split across the way in and the way back. Podgorica came first — fine for supermarkets, shopping and a good dinner (we ate deliciously at a restaurant called 263), but honestly not a multi-day stop. Ulcinj gave us one night: touristy, with a huge beach, boat rentals and endless cafés, and quite affordable — fun, but not somewhere we lingered.

The base that made Montenegro work was Petrovac, where we spent two nights at Hotel Danica — central but calm, three to five minutes on foot to the beach, supermarket and cafés, with a beautiful coastal path starting practically at the door and running past castle views to a quiet beach at the end. We wrote up the stay in detail in our Hotel Danica review, but the short version is that we would base in Petrovac again over touristy Budva or Kotor without hesitating. From there, day trips are easy: the Sveti Stefan viewpoint is a short drive up the coast, Budva is under an hour, and Kotor follows on naturally from Budva.

The single best thing we did in Montenegro was the Lipa Cave tour — a see-it-once-in-your-lifetime, water-formed cave that made a fun contrast with the lava caves we have visited in Iceland. The tour was well organised and works for any age; check current departure times before you drive out, as they run on a schedule.

Now the warning we repeat to everyone: do not blindly trust Google Maps in Montenegro in high season. It reroutes everyone around traffic jams onto tiny one-lane mountain roads where two cars physically cannot pass — we ended up in reversing standoffs and scratched our rental car in the process. Take the bigger road even when the app swears the small one is ten or twenty minutes faster. It is not, and it will cost you paint.

Albania: the heart of the trip

Albania got the biggest share — five to six days — and deserved every one of them. We split the time between the Albanian Alps, Komani Lake, and an easy base near Tirana airport, with visits around Tirana, Durrës and Bovilla Lake in between.

In the Alps we stayed two nights at Natyral Razma Resort in the Razëm area — quiet, cool air, an indoor pool and sauna, and the vegetable dishes there were a highlight of the entire Albanian leg (our full Razma review has the details). We had planned a proper Alps hike and cancelled it honestly: in that heat it would have been suffering, not hiking. The viewpoints along the mountain roads gave us the drama with none of the heatstroke, and we have already decided to come back in a cooler month with a week or more just for these mountains.

Komani Lake was the day that felt least like Europe and most like an adventure. You drive to Koman village, park at one of the paid lots roughly two kilometres from the ferry (around €5 a day), and minibuses shuttle you down to the water, where you are assigned a ferry by destination. The ride itself — an hour and more between mysterious cliffs — is an attraction in its own right. We slept at Twin Villas, wooden huts a couple of hundred metres from the dock with epic lake views and a star-filled sky you simply do not get under city lights; we tell that story properly in our Twin Villas Komani Lake review.

On money, let us kill a myth: Albania is not dirt cheap. Prices are broadly Eastern-European, some supermarket items cost Finnish-level money, and the real value is in accommodation — the standard and the views you get for the price are excellent. Hospitality was warm everywhere, the vegetable dishes were amazing (ask whether they are spicy), and tourist-trick moments were rare enough to forgive. Our last two nights at Hotel Erandi near the airport made the departure logistics painless, with Bovilla Lake’s mountains only a short drive away.

Building your own Balkan road trip itinerary: how many days where

If we drew the map again with what we know now, we would divide a two-week loop like this: give Croatia two to three days (we got less, and felt it), let Bosnia be a driving day with the Kravica stop unless you can spare a night, hold Montenegro at four days based in Petrovac, and protect five to six days for Albania — more if the mountains call to you the way they called to us. What we would change: add the Croatia days back, and visit outside peak August, because +35 °C days with spikes towards +42 °C shaped every decision we made. As Lapland residents we surrendered fast and adopted the local siesta rhythm — out early, hide from noon to three, out again in the evening.

The car itself is non-negotiable for this route. Book something you will not cry over a scratch on (see: Montenegro, above), and compare prices across local and international desks — a service like GetRentacar lets you check both in one place. Confirm with the rental company that you are allowed to cross every border on your route, and expect the paperwork for it to cost a little extra — rules vary by company, so check when you book.

And a word on the driving culture, because it is the thing people ask us about most: Balkan driving is simply less patient than what Nordic drivers are used to. Constant beeping, overtaking without signals, cars popping out of side streets. It is not a reason to skip the region. Drive slowly, stay patient, and never take the beeping personally — it is punctuation, not aggression.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

How many days do you need for a Balkan road trip?

Two weeks is the comfortable minimum for Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Albania in one loop. We managed it in less because our Croatia time was cut short by a cancelled flight, and adding those days back is the first thing we would change.

</details>
<details>

Can you do this route without a car?

Not this version of it. Buses connect the big cities, but the things that made our trip — Komani Lake, the Razëm mountains, Kravica at 17:00, small coastal bases like Petrovac — rely on having your own wheels and your own timetable.

</details>
<details>

Is it safe to drive in the Balkans?

We felt safe throughout; it is just a less patient driving culture than northern Europe. Drive calmly, ignore the beeping, and in Montenegro take the bigger road even when your navigation app suggests a tiny shortcut — that habit cost us a scratched rental car.

</details>
<details>

Can you cross borders with a rental car?

Usually yes, but only with the rental company’s written permission, and policies differ between companies and borders. Tell them your exact route when you book and check current requirements — do not assume it is included.

</details>
<details>

When is the best time for this route?

We drove it in August at +35 °C with days towards +42 °C, and we would choose June or September next time: same coastline, kinder temperatures, and you can actually hike in the Albanian Alps instead of admiring them from the car.

</details>
<details>

Do all four countries use the euro?

No. Croatia and Montenegro use the euro, but Bosnia has the convertible mark and Albania the lek, so carry a card with fair exchange rates and a little local cash — and remember EU roaming does not cover Bosnia, so line up an eSIM before you cross.

</details>

Our final word from Rovaniemi

Writing this back home in Rovaniemi, the whole loop feels slightly unreal: swimming under a Bosnian waterfall, reversing standoffs on Montenegrin mountain roads, a star-drenched night above Komani Lake. Four new countries took us to 25, and Albania’s mountains took a piece of us we will have to go back and collect — in a cooler month, with more days in hand.

Book this route if you want variety per kilometre that very few regions in Europe can match, and you are happy to trade a little driving chaos for it. Skip it — or at least reshape it — if you cannot travel outside peak summer and heat wilts you the way it wilts two Laplanders. Either way, put the buffer day at the start.
