But as <em>bases<\/em>, they come with high-season baggage: crowds, prices and parking wars. Petrovac runs at a different voltage. It is genuinely lovely \u2014 a bay with clean water, a castle on the rocks, pine-covered headlands \u2014 but it stays calm even in season.<\/p>\n<p>The strategic insight of our whole Montenegro leg was this: <strong>you don&#8217;t have to stay in the famous towns to see them.<\/strong> From Petrovac, Budva can take less than an hour depending on the season and traffic, Kotor continues naturally beyond it, Sveti Stefan&#8217;s postcard view is just up the coast \u2014 roughly 10\u201320 kilometres, check your route \u2014 and even Podgorica is close. We stayed all our southern-coast nights in one hotel, unpacked once, and day-tripped everywhere. From the door, it is about <strong>three to five minutes on foot<\/strong> to the beach, to the supermarket, and to the streets with the caf\u00e9s and souvenir shops. Everything a beach evening needs is a short stroll; none of its noise follows you home.<\/p>\n<p>The beach itself is genuinely nice: good views, clean water \u2014 the Adriatic at its clearest \u2014 and enough space to find your spot. You walk the pine-shaded coastline, the Adriatic doing its impossible-blue thing beside you, and at the end of the path you are rewarded with a beach \u2014 swim, turn around, stroll home for dinner.<\/p>\n<p>We did this walk more than once, which for a two-night stay is the highest compliment we can pay a piece of coastline. What surprised us was everything else about it \u2014 we stayed in one of the bigger rooms, which was closer to a small apartment: a bedroom <em>plus<\/em> a living room with a mini kitchen, a fridge stocked as a minibar, and a sofa. The bathroom, unlike the furniture, was properly modern. Doing them as day trips means you enjoy the old towns and hand the crowds back at sunset. One warning from experience: in high season, do not let your navigation app reroute you onto tiny mountain shortcuts \u2014 take the main road even if it claims to be slower.
