It isn&#8217;t \u2014 late August and September are some of the best weeks of the year for it around Rovaniemi, because the nights are finally dark again but the lakes haven&#8217;t frozen. That combination is the whole trick behind this photo.<\/p>\n<p>We had been driving around for the better part of an hour that night, looking for a gap in the cloud. When we found one, we also found a lake with no wind at all. The aurora came up low and green over the far shore, and the water simply doubled it.
