We have pulled perch through half a metre of lake ice in minus twenty and called it a nice morning. So when we drove up to Alta \u2014 three and a half hours north of us, on the coast of Finnmark \u2014 we were curious what a sea fishing tour could add that we had not already done in some form. The answer, it turns out, is quite a lot, because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nxjourney.no\/adventures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Fjord &amp; Fish by NX Journey<\/a> is not really a fishing tour. It says so right on their own site: \u201cthis is not a fishing trip.\u201d They mean it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Full transparency: we joined Fjord &amp; Fish as NX Journey\u2019s guests, as a collaboration. They did not ask to see this post, and they get no say in what we write. Everything below is what we would tell friends over coffee.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"htf-tldr\">\n<div class=\"htf-tldr-label\">Short answer<\/div>\n<p>Fjord &amp; Fish is a four-to-five-hour small-group day on the Altafjord run by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nxjourney.no\/adventures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NX Journey<\/a> \u2014 traditional fishing, coastal and S\u00e1mi stories told by people who actually live them, and a hot meal on board. It departs from Alta harbour on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, runs all year, and takes a maximum of twelve guests. What gets less attention is that the fjord itself is the town\u2019s whole biography. Everything that ever happened to Alta \u2014 the fishing, the S\u00e1mi coastal culture, the war, the slate, even the science \u2014 happened on or around this water.<\/p>\n<p>We had been to Alta before and done the usual: the museum, the cathedral, a drive along the shore. Like Como taught us last month, looking at water from the land is not the same as being on it. So when the chance came to go out with NX Journey, we took it without much deliberation.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s2\">What Fjord &amp; Fish actually is<\/h2>\n<p>On paper: a four-to-five-hour trip on the Altafjord, departing from Alta harbour, running Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays all year round. Small groups only \u2014 minimum two guests, maximum twelve. In practice it is closer to being invited into a working coastal day: traditional fishing, crab pots as part of the rhythm of the trip, and a crew that treats the fjord as a place they are from rather than a product they are selling.<\/p>\n<h3>What is included<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Skipper, guide and hosting for the full trip \u2014 you are looked after the entire time, not handed a rod and left alone.<\/li>\n<li>All safety gear. The fjord is sheltered, but this is still the Arctic and they take it seriously.<\/li>\n<li>A proper hot meal on board \u2014 more on the soup below, because it deserves its own section.<\/li>\n<li>Fishing gear and genuinely patient instruction. Neither of us needed much help, but we watched the crew walk a first-timer through everything without a hint of hurry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What it costs<\/h3>\n<p>Fjord &amp; Fish is NOK 7,500 per person at the time of writing, and there is a private option for up to eight people at NOK 55,000. We want to be straightforward about this: that is a premium price, and it is priced that way because it is a hosted, small-group, meal-included cultural day rather than a bare-bones fishing charter. If all you want is to pull as many cod as possible out of the sea, Alta has cheaper boats. If you want to understand where you are while you fish, this is the one we would point you to.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s3\">The fishing: a few sei and one stubborn uer<\/h2>\n<p>The fishing itself is the traditional kind \u2014 lines down, jig, wait, feel. Within the first stretch the sei started coming up. Pollock, if you want the English word, but the skipper said <em>sei<\/em> and by the end of the day so did we. They fight more than their reputation suggests, and a few of them ended up in our bucket.<\/p>\n<p>The character of the day, though, was the <em>uer<\/em> \u2014 a redfish. It came up slowly from deep water, bright orange, spiky, and looking personally offended by the entire situation. If you have only ever fished Finnish lakes, a redfish is a small revelation: it looks like it swam out of a warmer ocean and took a wrong turn at the Arctic Circle.<\/p>\n<p>What we appreciated most was the pace. Nobody was counting kilos. When the fish went quiet, nobody pretended otherwise \u2014 the crew shifted the trip toward the shoreline and the stories, and the fishing became the excuse rather than the point. Which, we suspect, is the design.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s4\">The stories: Alta\u2019s history from the water<\/h2>\n<p>This is where Fjord &amp; Fish separates itself from every fishing trip we have done. The crew told Alta\u2019s history the way you hope locals will and they rarely do \u2014 unhurried, specific, and clearly their own, rooted in the S\u00e1mi culture and the sea that shaped this coastline for generations.<\/p>\n<p>From the water, the history stops being abstract. People have lived on this fjord for thousands of years \u2014 the rock carvings at Hjemmeluft, just along the shore, go back as far as seven millennia, and suddenly you are floating on the same water those carvers fished. The sea S\u00e1mi communities that lived from these shores. The Second World War, when the battleship Tirpitz hid in K\u00e5fjord \u2014 a branch of this same fjord \u2014 and the autumn of 1944, when retreating forces burned Finnmark and Alta with it, so that almost nothing in town is older than the war. Hearing that story while looking at the actual shoreline it happened on is a different thing than reading it on a museum wall.<\/p>\n<p>We asked a lot of questions. We have eaten a lot of fish soup between us \u2014 Finnish lohikeitto is practically a food group in our house \u2014 and this one goes on the short list. Creamy, generous with the fish, clearly made by someone who has made it a thousand times and still cares.<\/p>\n<p>There is something about eating a hot meal on cold water that improves it by an honest twenty percent, and we account for that. It was still excellent. Gear and instruction are included, and the crew are patient teachers. We watched a complete beginner land fish with a grin that lasted the rest of the trip.<\/p>\n<\/details><details>\n<summary>When does the tour run?<\/summary>\n<p>All year, on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, departing from Alta harbour. The fjord holds pollock (sei), cod, haddock and redfish (uer) among others. It is the feeling of being told a place\u2019s story by people who belong to it, on the exact water where the story happened, with a bowl of hot soup as a footnote that somehow made the whole argument.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Norway does this better than almost anywhere: the line between \u201ctour\u201d and \u201cbeing welcomed into a way of life\u201d is thin when the people running the boat are the way of life.
