in December means almost no daylight (the sun barely clears the horizon around the solstice), real snow from late November, and the highest concentration of Christmas tourism anywhere on Earth. Expect magical blue twilight, strong northern lights odds, and long queues at Santa Claus Village. Skip the overpriced snowmobile-and-husky combo packages and the assumption that you need a tour for everything — a rental car and warm layers get you further for less.

In this guide

What Lapland in December actually looks like

Weather, daylight, and what to pack

Quick reference: December by the numbers

What to do (and what’s overrated)

Northern lights in December

The mistakes we see every December

Frequently asked questions

A final word from Rovaniemi

What Lapland in December actually looks like

We need to start with the thing that surprises people most: in Rovaniemi in December, the sun barely clears the horizon. Around the winter solstice it is up for only an hour or two, low and golden. The true polar night, kaamos, starts a little further north — in Saariselkä or Utsjoki the sun stays below the horizon for weeks.

But the low sun doesn’t mean pitch black. What you get is a long, slow gradient of deep blue twilight between roughly 10 am and 2 pm. The snow reflects that blue back, and the whole landscape glows in a way that’s hard to describe until you’ve seen it. Locals call it the “blue moment” — sininen hetki — and it’s one of the most beautiful things about living here.

The two Decembers

There are really two versions of Lapland in December, and which one you get depends on when you arrive:

Early December (1–15): quieter, cheaper, snow is already deep, you still get about 2–3 hours of dusky light. Northern lights odds are solid. This is the window we recommend to friends.

Late December (16–31): peak Christmas rush. Santa Claus Village is packed, accommodation prices double, and the days are at their shortest. It’s still magical — but you’ll share it with a lot of people, and you’ll pay for the privilege.

Temperature range

Expect anything from −5 °C to −30 °C. Every operator runs their biggest programs, and the pressure to book everything in advance is real. Here’s what’s worth your time and money — and what isn’t.

Worth it — Northern lights hunt (self-drive): rent a car, drive 20 minutes out of Rovaniemi, and park somewhere dark. Free, flexible, and you control the timing. Bring a thermos of hot chocolate.

Worth it — Husky safari (choose a small operator): the big factory-style operations run 50+ sleds a day. Find a smaller farm — 6–10 dogs per sled, personal attention, and you actually get to drive. The price is similar.

Worth it — Icebreaker cruise (if budget allows): the Sampo icebreaker in Kemi runs in December. It’s expensive (€300+), but it’s genuinely one of a kind — you float in the frozen sea in a survival suit.

Overrated — Santa Claus Village day visit in peak week: the village itself is free to enter and worth seeing once, but in late December it’s shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. Visit early December or early morning.

Overrated — Combo packages: “snowmobile + husky + reindeer + ice fishing” in one day sounds like value. In practice, you spend most of the time being shuttled between locations, each activity is 20 minutes, and you’re exhausted. Pick one or two and do them properly.

Worth it — Finnish sauna after any outdoor activity: most hotels and cabins have a sauna. Use it. After a day in −20 °C, a 90 °C sauna followed by rolling in the snow is peak Lapland.

Northern lights in December: realistic expectations

December is a solid month for the aurora, but it comes with a trade-off most guides don’t mention: December has some of the highest cloud cover of the year. The nights are long and dark (perfect for viewing), but the skies are often cloudy (terrible for viewing). It’s a coin flip — which is why we always recommend staying at least three nights.

Best window: 10 pm to 1 am local time — that’s the magnetic midnight zone for Rovaniemi.

KP index: anything from KP 1+ is enough at our latitude. Don’t obsess over high KP — clear skies matter more.

Cloud cover: check the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) hourly cloud forecast. If there’s a clear patch within 60 km, drive to it.

Where to go: anywhere 10–30 km outside Rovaniemi. Vikaköngäs, Sinettäjärvi, or the small roads behind Santa Claus Village all work.

Realistic odds on a 3-night December stay: about 45–55% chance of seeing the aurora at least once. January and February have better odds (clearer skies), but December is far from hopeless.

Our advice: treat the northern lights as a bonus, not the point of the trip. If you build your entire December trip around the aurora, a cloudy week will ruin it. If you come for the polar twilight, the snow, and the sauna, the aurora is a spectacular surprise when it shows up.

The mistakes we see every December (so you don’t make them)

Booking only one night. The single biggest mistake. One cloudy night and you’ve seen nothing. Three nights is the minimum for a real experience.

Not renting a car. Public transport exists but it’s thin. A car lets you chase clear skies for the aurora, visit smaller villages, and escape the Rovaniemi tourist bubble. Winter tires are always included in Finland.

Packing cotton. We keep saying it, but we keep seeing it. Cotton kills warmth in cold weather. Bring merino wool or synthetics.

Eating only at tourist restaurants. Rovaniemi’s tourist-strip restaurants charge Reykjavik prices for average food. Ask any local and they’ll point you to places that cost half as much and taste better.

Expecting constant snow. Lapland has reliable snow by December, but it doesn’t snow every day. Many December days are clear and cold — beautiful, but not the constant snowfall you see in promotional videos.

Skipping the sauna. Even if your hotel sauna looks plain, use it. The sauna-to-snow cycle is what makes a cold Lapland day into a good one. It’s not a luxury — it’s how Finns survive winter.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Is Lapland in December worth visiting?

Yes — if you come prepared for the cold and the darkness. The polar twilight is genuinely beautiful, northern lights odds are decent, and the snow cover is deep and reliable. Just avoid the last week of December if crowds and prices bother you.

</details>
<details>

How cold is Lapland in December?

The average is around −10 to −15 °C, but cold snaps can push temperatures to −25 or −30 °C. With proper layers (merino base, down mid, windproof shell), it’s manageable. Without them, you’ll be miserable within 20 minutes.

</details>
<details>

Is there daylight in Lapland in December?

In Rovaniemi, the sun barely clears the horizon around the winter solstice (roughly December 15–28), but you still get about 4 hours of blue twilight. Further south in Finnish Lapland, you get a bit more. It’s never pitch black during the day — the snow reflects whatever light is there.

</details>
<details>

Can you see the northern lights in Lapland in December?

Yes. December has very long dark nights, which is good for aurora viewing. The trade-off is high cloud cover. On a 3-night stay, your odds of catching at least one display are around 45–55%. Drive outside the city for the best views.

</details>
<details>

How much does a December trip to Lapland cost?

Budget roughly €100–€150 per person per day for accommodation, food, and car rental. Activities add €80–€250 each (husky safari, snowmobile, etc.). A glass igloo or premium cabin can run €300–€600/night. Early December is significantly cheaper than the Christmas week.

</details>
<details>

Should I visit in early or late December?

Early December (1–14) is our recommendation. You get snow, darkness for aurora hunting, fewer crowds, lower prices, and slightly more twilight. Late December is festive and atmospheric, but it’s the most expensive and crowded window of the year.

</details>

A final word from Rovaniemi

We won’t pretend December in Lapland is for everyone. It’s dark. It’s cold. The tourist machine runs at full speed, and if you stick to the main circuit you’ll spend a lot of money for a fairly packaged experience.

But step off the trail — rent a car, drive north past the tourist zone, park by a frozen lake at midnight — and December in Lapland is one of the most quietly spectacular things we’ve experienced. The blue twilight. The silence. The crunch of snow under your boots in a place where nobody else thought to walk that day.

We live here, and December still gets us. Come prepared, skip what doesn’t matter, and give yourself enough nights to let the place breathe. Lapland in December isn’t a one-day Instagram stop — it’s a slow, dark, beautiful thing that rewards patience.

See you on the trail.

— Joona & Alla, Rovaniemi

J&A

About the authors

Joona & Alla

A Finnish-Ukrainian couple living in Rovaniemi, Finland.
