Friends who had been quoted figures that made our eyes water — 300 euro dinners, 200 euro hotel rooms, 3 euro for a single banana. We went anyway, spent 12 days driving the Ring Road, and our final per-person daily cost came to €94. That includes everything: the Smyril Line ferry with our car, fuel, camping, food, hot pots, and even a whale watching tour in Husavik.

This is not a guide about suffering through Iceland on stale bread. We ate well, slept warm, drove everywhere we wanted, and came home feeling like we had done the trip properly. The trick is knowing where Iceland’s prices are genuinely steep and where they are surprisingly reasonable — and we learned both the hard way.

Short answer

Yes, you can travel Iceland on a budget as a couple. We averaged €94 per person per day over 12 days on the Ring Road. The biggest savings came from camping, cooking our own meals, and taking the Smyril Line ferry instead of flying. Iceland is expensive, but it is not as impossible as the internet makes it sound.

In this guide

Our full 12-day budget breakdown

How we kept accommodation under €25/night each

8 budget moves that saved us hundreds

What to bring from home (and what not to buy in Iceland)

Iceland budget vs reality: where prices surprised us

Budget mistakes we made (so you do not have to)

FAQ

A final word from Rovaniemi

Our full 12-day budget breakdown

The numbers, per person

We tracked every purchase on the trip. Here is the full breakdown for one person over 12 days. Alla managed the spreadsheet and neither of us was allowed to round down.

Transport (ferry + fuel): €340 — Smyril Line return with car from Denmark (€520 for two, split), plus €80 in fuel for 2,800 km around the Ring Road. Fuel in Iceland costs roughly 2.60 euro per liter.

Accommodation: €290 — Nine nights camping at €15 to €22 per site, three nights in guesthouses at €45 to €65 per person when the weather turned nasty.

Food and drink: €310 — Groceries from Bonus and Kronan for most meals, four restaurant dinners at €30 to €45 each, and too many gas station hot dogs at 500 ISK each.

Activities: €120 — Whale watching in Husavik (€75), Myvatn Nature Baths (€35), and a handful of small museum entries.

Miscellaneous: €68 — Campsite showers, laundry, one parking fee in Reykjavik, mobile data top-up.

Total per person: €1,128 for 12 days. That is €94 per day.

What was not included

We already owned our camping gear and drove our own car from Finland to Denmark for the ferry. If you need to rent a car in Iceland, add roughly €60 to €90 per day for a basic SUV in summer 2026 (split between two, that is €30 to €45 each). If you fly instead of taking the ferry, a return flight from Europe runs €150 to €350 depending on timing and airline.

How we kept accommodation under €25/night each

Camping is the single biggest budget lever

Iceland has over 170 registered campsites. Most cost between 2,000 and 3,000 ISK per person per night (roughly €13 to €20). For that you get a flat patch of grass, access to toilets, and sometimes a kitchen shelter. Some sites include showers; others charge 500 ISK for five minutes of hot water. After camping in the Nordics for years, we found Icelandic campsites perfectly adequate.

The Camping Card costs 22,900 ISK (about €150) and covers 28 nights at participating sites for up to two adults. We did not buy one because our 12-day trip meant the per-night math did not work out. If you are staying more than 15 nights, it pays for itself.

When we chose a guesthouse instead

Three times we checked into a guesthouse instead of pitching the tent: once in Vik when horizontal rain made camping genuinely unpleasant, once in Akureyri because we wanted a proper shower and a kitchen for a longer cook, and once in Egilsstadir because we arrived late and the campsite was exposed to 50 km/h gusts. Each time cost €90 to €130 for a double room with shared bathroom. We booked on Booking.com the same day and always found availability outside of Reykjavik.

8 budget moves that saved us hundreds

01 — Shop at Bonus and Kronan, not 10-11

Bonus (the pink pig logo) and Kronan are Iceland’s budget supermarkets. Prices are 30 to 50 percent lower than the convenience stores attached to petrol stations. We stocked up in Reykjavik on day one and again in Akureyri halfway through. A full grocery run for four days of meals cost us about 12,000 ISK (€78) for two people.

02 — Cook at campsite kitchens

Most campsites have a communal kitchen with a stove, sink, and sometimes a microwave. We cooked pasta, rice with canned fish, soup, and one-pot stews almost every night. Our portable gas burner was the backup for sites without a kitchen. Cooking saved us at least €40 per day compared to eating out.

03 — Bring food from the ferry

The Smyril Line ferry has a tax-free shop with Scandinavian prices, not Icelandic ones. We loaded up on cheese, bread, coffee, snacks, and a few bottles of wine before disembarking in Seydisfjordur. This covered our first three days of meals and saved at least €50 compared to buying the same items in Iceland.

04 — Skip the Blue Lagoon, do Myvatn Nature Baths

The Blue Lagoon costs €75 to €100 per person and requires advance booking. Myvatn Nature Baths offers a nearly identical experience — milky blue geothermal water with a mountain backdrop — for about €35. We preferred Myvatn. It was quieter, more natural, and a third of the price. Many campsite towns also have public swimming pools with hot pots for under €8.

05 — Fill water bottles from the tap everywhere

Icelandic tap water is glacial and clean. There is zero reason to buy bottled water. We filled two 1.5-liter bottles at every campsite, guesthouse, and public bathroom. Over 12 days, this saved at least €30 that would have gone to overpriced convenience store water.

06 — Time fuel stops at Orkan or Costco

Fuel prices vary by 20 to 30 ISK per liter across Iceland. Orkan self-service stations are consistently the cheapest. The Costco fuel station in Reykjavik is the cheapest in the country if you pass through the capital. We filled up strategically and saved roughly €15 over the full trip compared to filling at whatever station was nearest.

07 — Do the free stuff first

Most of Iceland’s best attractions are free: Godafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Dettifoss, Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, the Diamond Beach, Studlagil Canyon, and every lava field you can walk on. We spent most of our time at places that cost nothing and saved our activity budget for the one or two paid experiences that were truly worth it.

08 — Take the ferry instead of flying

The Smyril Line ferry from Hirtshals (Denmark) to Seydisfjordur costs about €520 return for two people with a car. A return flight for two from Europe plus a rental car in Iceland for 12 days would cost €1,200 to €1,800 combined. The ferry saved us €700 or more, and we started the Ring Road from the beautiful east coast instead of the overcrowded south.

Letters from Rovaniemi

Honest travel stories, once a month

We write about slow Nordic travel, shoulder-season trips, and the places we keep going back to.

Subscribe

What to bring from home (and what not to buy in Iceland)

Bring: a portable gas burner and a few fuel canisters. Campsite kitchens are common but not universal. Having your own burner means you can cook anywhere. Gas canisters are available in Iceland but cost three times what they do in Scandinavia.

Bring: a reusable coffee filter or Aeropress. A single cafe coffee in Iceland costs €4 to €6. We made our own every morning from ground coffee we brought on the ferry.

Bring: snacks, dried food, and spices. Trail mix, instant noodles, oatmeal, and basic spices weigh almost nothing and save you from paying €8 for a bag of nuts at a petrol station.

Bring: rain gear you actually trust. If you buy a rain jacket in Iceland because yours fails, you are paying €80 to €200 for the same thing that costs €30 to €80 at home.

Do not bring: more alcohol than the duty-free limit. Iceland’s alcohol prices are brutal, but getting caught over the import limit is worse. Buy your limit at the ferry’s tax-free shop.

Do not bring: a car roof box unless you need it. Roof boxes increase fuel consumption by 10 to 15 percent. On a 2,800 km trip, that adds up. We packed everything inside the car and the rooftop tent.

Iceland budget vs reality: where prices surprised us

Cheaper than expected: campsites. At €13 to €20 per person, Icelandic campsites are comparable to Norway and cheaper than many in central Europe. The facilities were basic but always clean.

Cheaper than expected: fuel. At €2.60 per liter, Iceland’s fuel is expensive by European standards but not dramatically worse than Norway (€2.10) or Finland (€1.80). We spent €160 total on fuel for two, which was less than we had budgeted.

Cheaper than expected: public pools. Hot pots and swimming pools across Iceland cost 800 to 1,200 ISK (€5 to €8). For that you get hot tubs, a sauna, and sometimes a water slide. We used them as our evening relaxation and they were the best-value activity on the trip.

More expensive than expected: eating out. Even a simple fish and chips at a harbor restaurant costs €25 to €30. A sit-down dinner for two with one beer each averaged €80 to €100. We budgeted €60 and had to adjust upward.

More expensive than expected: anything in Reykjavik. Reykjavik prices are 20 to 40 percent higher than the rest of Iceland for food, parking, and accommodation. We spent one night in the capital and it was our most expensive day by far.

More expensive than expected: laundry. One load of washing at a campsite or laundromat costs 1,000 to 1,500 ISK (€7 to €10). We did laundry twice and spent €18 on clean clothes. Hand-washing in the campsite sink was the frugal alternative we should have embraced sooner.

Iceland is not cheap, but it is not the budget destroyer people claim — if you camp, cook, and resist the urge to eat every meal at a harbour restaurant.

Budget mistakes we made (so you do not have to)

Eating out on day one in Seydisfjordur. We arrived from the ferry excited and hungry and spent €85 on dinner for two at a harbour restaurant. The food was fine but not €85 fine. We should have cooked on the boat or in the car park. Every budget trip has a day-one splurge — this was ours.

Not buying enough groceries in Reykjavik. We assumed we would find Bonus stores along the Ring Road. We did, but only in the larger towns. Between Vik and Hofn there is almost nothing. Stock up in every large town as if the next one is three days away — because sometimes it is.

Paying for hot water at the wrong campsites. Some campsites charge 500 ISK for a shower; others include it free. We did not research which was which and ended up paying for showers at sites where the neighbouring campsite ten minutes down the road included them. Check the Tjalda.is app before booking.

Filling up at the first petrol station we saw. Petrol prices at tourist-heavy stops near waterfalls or on remote stretches are 20 to 30 ISK per liter more than at Orkan self-service stations in towns. Over 2,800 km the difference adds up. We should have been more strategic from the start.

Skipping the Camping Card. In hindsight, if we had extended the trip to 15 days, the card would have saved us about €40. If you are flexible on trip length, do the math before you go.

Underestimating Reykjavik parking costs. We parked in central Reykjavik for six hours and paid 3,600 ISK (€23). There are free parking areas on the edge of town within walking distance. We found them the next morning, after we had already paid.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Can you travel Iceland on a budget as a couple in 2026?

Yes. We averaged €94 per person per day over 12 days, and that included the ferry, fuel, camping, food, and paid activities. The key savings are camping instead of hotels, cooking your own meals, and shopping at Bonus or Kronan rather than convenience stores. Iceland is expensive but manageable with preparation.

</details><details>

How much does a 10-day trip to Iceland cost for two people?

Realistically, €1,800 to €2,500 total for two people on a mid-budget camping trip. That covers transport, campsites, groceries, fuel, and a couple of paid activities. If you stay in guesthouses and eat out regularly, expect €3,500 to €5,000 for two. Luxury hotels and tours push it beyond €7,000.

</details><details>

Is the Iceland Camping Card worth it?

If you plan to camp for 15 or more nights, yes. The card costs 22,900 ISK (about €150) and covers 28 nights at participating sites for two adults. Below 15 nights, paying per site is usually cheaper. Check which sites participate — some popular ones like Skogafoss are not included.

</details><details>

What is the cheapest way to get to Iceland from Europe?

Budget airlines like PLAY offer flights from €50 one way from select European cities. However, once you add a rental car, the Smyril Line ferry from Denmark with your own car often works out cheaper for trips of 10 days or more. The ferry also lets you bring camping gear, food, and supplies from the continent.

</details><details>

Is it cheaper to cook or eat out in Iceland?

Cooking is dramatically cheaper. A day of self-catered meals from Bonus costs about €12 to €18 per person. A single restaurant dinner costs €30 to €50 per person. Over 12 days, cooking saved us an estimated €400 each compared to eating every meal out.

</details><details>

Are campsite facilities good enough in Iceland?

Facilities are basic but clean. Most sites have toilets and a kitchen shelter with stove and sink. Showers are available at most larger sites, sometimes for an extra fee. Hot water is geothermally heated so it never runs out. We found Icelandic campsites comparable to Norwegian ones and better than many in southern Europe.

</details>

A final word from Rovaniemi

We live in the most expensive region of one of the most expensive countries in Europe. We know what it means to travel on a budget when everything around you costs more than it should. Iceland felt similar — high sticker prices but with enough local knowledge and willingness to cook your own food, a trip that is entirely affordable.

The best things in Iceland are free. Waterfalls, lava fields, glaciers, black sand beaches, geothermal steam, and light that does not quit in summer. You do not need to spend €300 a day to experience what makes the country extraordinary. We spent €94, and we would not have changed a single day. If you are on the fence about whether Iceland fits your budget, our answer is simple: go, camp, cook, and let the landscape do the rest.

Tools we use · Referral link

Keep your crypto offline, not in an exchange app

Any crypto we hold lives on a Trezor hardware wallet — a small offline device in a drawer in Rovaniemi, not on a phone that crosses borders every month.
